About this video: the idea of naming those types 0, -1, -2. +1, +2 is not mine.
I got it from one Ukranian stylist. His name is Roman Medny. (He's also on KZfaq - for some of you who understands Russian language.) So he is also the one from whom I heard about Kibbe Body Types some years ago. So I was thinking about those types of contrast a lot and decided to make a big scale with women from all over the world and analyse them from that viewpoint. Also I cleared the definition, and decided to be more specific based on the definition. It's not perfect, there's no science to it. I'm sure in some time I will re-think some of them and maybe will be more specific. It all is pretty new for me too. That's how I do my researches - while editing my videos aahhaha. Anyway hope you enjoy ))) And don't take it too seriously. Let's just play the game!

🙋🏼 ABOUT ME: Hi guys! My name is Alyona. I was born in Russia. I'm a musician. And I love art, makeup, fashion, style and beautiful environments. I love playing with makeup and fashion, but at the same time, I’m quite a minimalistic person. I don't like the idea of being fixated on the body too much. I have an alternative and unconventional viewpoint on beauty, the body types and face shapes. I love helping other women find their "it" and finally discover their beauty and boost their confidence.
I have several series on my channel that you might be interested in such as: Body Types, Contouring, Makeup History and Makeup Transformations. Also some random beauty hacks about skin care, hair, nails and beauty in general.

Aly Art Your video blew my mind. Very sophisticated approach. :) And I agree. Just like we can't possibly know everything about Russian women, you can't know everything about women from other parts of the world. What's important is that you value and consider the feedback of your audience. This way it remains an alive conversation between you and your viewers, not a one-sided interaction. Thumbs up! 👍🏻

You should contact Netflix to see if you could a show for them where you travel and talk about beauty/coloring/everything you always talk about in your regular videos, but around the world with real examples of everyday women. Also you could meet with experts in the field to get their opinion. I know it sounds crazy to contact an organization as huge as Netflix, but every day they are picking up smaller creators to turn their shows in reality and what's the harm in trying. Huge fan and good luck!

I think it stinks that you get so much criticism. I really appreciate your videos, because unlike so many videos that say “ just wear what makes you happy”, you focus on using how our bodies are actually made and understanding how to dress to suit these different shapes, bone structures, and skin tones. It makes sense that living where you do many skin types would not be available for your personal observation, and I think you are correct in wanting to be able to observe first hand for clear understanding before teaching us. Many style methods rely solely on personality, or basic shapes at best, but what solely suits our personality may not suit our body structure and skin tone/contrast. Again, I really appreciate what you do.

Hopefully she just can focus on positive messages and legitimate criticism (only critique I'd have is the different body types including so many facial features makes it very confusing... I feel like those, face and body type, should be categorically different) . I agree she great, and works very hard to research and be kind. Even when I disagree with some suggestions, I usually understand why those suggestions are made .

agree, we are smart enough to know that in the whole world there are different types of people. For example not all east asians have black hair or not all africans are black and so on, but this was not the point of the first part, she talked about contrast nothing more or less. People are just too sensitive. Btw I have dark skin, brown eyes and dark hair, and live in Austria, born in Austria, my father is Austrian. I consider myself an Austrian, but typical Austrian Woman are blond, fair skin and have blue eyes. I wouldn't be offended if she would have shown a blond Austrian, just because I'm not. lol This would be childish.

Fascinating video :) There is actually studies showing that 'higher contrast', especially for the eyebrows and lips, is associated with youth and fertility in all cultures. This suggests that to look younger or more fertile, women darken these areas. Of course, both high and low contrast faces and parts of faces can be lovely. I took nothing wrong with your categories, thank you for always being so graceful, and genuine.

I can't imagine what's it like to be a youtuber and see all those comments at once, from different people all over the world. I would probably find it overwhelming. I can't even handle one comment, in response to my comments, sometimes. But, try to think, those comments aren't all about you, your video might have been a 'trigger', but I doubt those women didn't feel that way more or less, before seeing your video. Treating Africa as a country is a cliché. People are able to separate Denmark and Sweden in their minds but for whatever reason African countries do not get the same distinction. And that can touch a nerve. It's a bit like, if people didn't know the difference between Ex-Soviet countries and Russia, and they just called everything "Russia". People from those countries would be pretty offended, even if they were only separated < 50 years ago. Please please please 🙏 make more videos about body types, colouring, everything, coz I love them, and I need them.

No offence taken here. You’re exploring and that’s cool. Don’t stop. I like Jen Thoden’s approach to colour analysis. She has simplified four seasons and I find it much more intuitive and workable. I’m medium, warm and bright in her system and it captures me much better than clear spring. I need bright and warm or pure colours and not light colours, and not too much contrast. I can wear some deep colours but better with medium depth.

I hit "like" on both of your vids because I am more concentrated on the type of skin color rather than what countries you chose. I was born in America from Guatemalan parents. Guatemala is in Central America. This is Latin America. My skin is light and Latinos that aren't from Guatemalan parents get confused when they see me because they assume that all Guatemalans have darker skin like the Guatemalans of indigenous descent. And if you Google this, Google will usually give you results of the indigenous culture from Guatemala and not so much of the mixed ethnicity, like my family's. My point is that even within Latinos, people make assumptions about other Latinos. This is perfectly normal and I personally do not get offended. Humans created all these different countries, races, and ethnicities, but to me we are all the same and we are either darker, or lighter when it comes to skin color. I personally believe that you can leave out naming the countries from where you are getting the pictures from and just talk about the different skin colors. I didn't mind the way you did it, but if this is an issue for some viewers, you don't have to specify where you got the pictures from. Don't name the countries. 🤗 But of course this is just a suggestion 👍

I guess the point of googling different countries for her is to show the real looks of people around the globe, rather than just showing people of different origins that were born in, say, North America. Because in North America, the two factors of small gene pools for certain ethnicities and interracial marriage make coloured people's looks not always represent "their people" from the old continents. (I'm from Northern China, Manchuria to be specific, as half Han half Manchu I don't feel represented at all by the Cantonese Chinese in North America)
@Dan_Chiron
@Dan_Chiron 4 жыл бұрын
I made this suggestion because 'race' is a very sensitive topic. I'm Mexican and, in my country, we are all mixed in a degree (and I don't mean biracial mixing only): we descend from Europeans (Spaniards, French and Portuguese, mainly), from a variety of indigenous groups, from Chinese and also black people. There are very European-like people, very indigenous featured people and a *wide* range of in-betweens. That's why I understand how hard it would be to represent all Mexican women in only one or two photos, specially if what we want to discuss is contrast and how every beauty is unique and interesting. Greetings to everyone, thanks for your comments.

While watching your previous video I thought this would happen. It's all a matter of interpretation. I'm Brazilian and I look nothing like the women you showed from my country but I know that Google would show you them and it's okay. Brazil and many other countries are so mixed, people are so different from each other. You relied on what the internet told you and still did you best not to stereotype women around the world. There's no reason to backlash on you, you did great and you're always considerate and involve all kinds of women in your videos. And still, there's no way you can recognize and talk about every unique skintone, hair type, body shape or whatever. These studies you do are VERY helpful but I don't think it's 100% accurate, nothing is, it's up to interpretation, people come in all shapes and forms and we can't have a box to every single one of us. Anyways, keep up the good work, Aly!

Aly, I loved part 1 and I'm glad you clarified your perspective and process in this video to set the record straight. I do believe there is a need to showcase more examples of women of African descent but I also understand how incredibly difficult it must be for you to find that information through google. I'm all about solutions and supporting one another. So I'd like to introduce you to a photographer who exclusively photographed black/brown women his name is Joey Rosado and his IG is @islandboiphotography. He has endless beautiful photographs of brown women of all shades and shapes. It should also be somewhat easy to track down the country of origin of the women featured. I hope this helps. In the future, maybe you could make a request for your followers to send you pictures of women with details on nationality and heritage of the person on the photo. I think this project is beautiful, empowering, highly needed and fascinating. I would actually love for you to make more videos on this topic but break it down so that each video focuses on one continent/region each time. So you could have one for Asia, Africa, central-South America and Middle East for example. One last thing, thank you for the incredible content you publish and all the hard work that goes in it.

Laeticia Etetebe I love that you came from a space of being solution-oriented. I love Aly’s KZfaq channel, I think she always makes an attempt to be inclusive in how she conceptualizes beauty and the information she talks about has been SO helpful in allowing me to recognize my own beauty. I do think this subject showed a blind spot for her; there was a bit of ignorance and bias on the categorizing people of African descendent (contrasting the chosen woman of African descendent with paler skin/whiteness vs assessing their contrast as individuals) and I think there might have been a hesitancy to fully engage because of the unfamiliarity with it, which caused her theory to be incredibly inconsistent. The scale started as a spectrum of low-contrast to high contrast, and it unconsciously took a turn where it ended up being a spectrum of lightness and darkness of skin color. Darkness or depth of skin color does not mean there is high contrast within that individuals hair color and iris; it just means there is a high contrast between their skin color and a light background. I read a few threads under the original video, which discussed the confusion of contrast with saturation of skin color and chroma, which I also played a part of the theory (and video) being received with inconsistencies. But with that said, I am appreciative of her ability to acknowledge her ignorance, and I really hope that she sees your comment; the more familiar she is with seeing women of African descent, the more likely she is to train her eye in understanding the nuanced different between them, just as she understands the nuance difference of individuals from northern European countries. I think this will also allow her to compare women of African descent within their own subsets as opposed against other subsets of women (which would then lead to a more cohesive theory).

Hi Aly, I absolutely love your videos and find them extremely interesting and informative. My biggest confusion with how you present contrast is that you seem to always compare colors against white. Of course dark colors are going to show most contrast when compared to white. But to me pure black/pure white has the highest contrast level whether you compare black to white or white to black. So, using your circles example in the video, if you had showed white circles against a black background, wouldn't the contrast level be equally as high as black circles within the white background? As far as seasonal color analysis goes, I always thought of contrast as the difference between hair/eyes/skin within the same person, not compared to black or white. So someone with very fair skin and very dark hair would have high contrast, while someone with very dark skin and very dark hair (or very fair skin and very fair hair) would have low contrast. You are right there are so many ways to interpret the same information, it is fascinating. Please keep doing what you do. We can all benefit by learning to see things from different perspectives. :)

I think that color analysis can be applied to all different types of women even dark ones. The problem with the beauty industry is that it’s barely becoming inclusive of all skin types. It has always been an emphasis on “white” beauty and that’s why most systems are dedicated to them. Black/ darker people have yet to be explored and although there is equally as much beauty behind it, it’s still very unexplored by many. Black/ dark skin women are just learning to embrace their natural features, skin color and hair types and Its actually much more suiting and natural and really brings their beauty to the surface. many beauty/fashion industries still have a long way to go. I don’t have all the words to write here on KZfaq but if I can break it down in the most simplest way, Beauty must flow with each person and their different characteristics should be emphasized to only further showcase its uniqueness, not changed.

The only reason people really mentioned the Africa thing is because it's a big continent with the MOST variation in phenotype, so Ik I was hoping you would choose a few countries from the continent and maybe I could find myself in there. The women you chose were beautiful and I'm glad you included them but I actually didnt fit any of the three. You chose so many countries from Europe where many of the women actually had the same contrast, and you at least chose countries WITHIN Asia instead of lumping all of Asia together the way you did with Africa. I enjoy your content and tips but I would like to feel like I can take something from it if you were more specific. Take for example myself, I have middle brown skin or darker than mid brown in terms of blackness, with red undertones. But very pink or red lips, and super dark hair. Based off the last video am I high contrast or low contrast, and my eyes are dark brown. I just didnt know where I would've fit. This video update was necessary because based off the last video it did seem like you lumped Africa. Maybe the white viewers dont understand why that would feel exclusionary, but many of your black ones did. I'm glad you made this video because now I know why the video went the way it did. Keep making content tho, I just hope you will be more mindful.

but she said she was counting on google to tell where the women were from. google didint say which countries the black women were from, it said just Africa. she showed a picture of a german woman and people from germany said she was from turkey who lives in germany but ally couldnt know that. the main thing was about the colors, she tried to put the country factot but since she was relying on google she made those mistakes
@biancaxo4570
@biancaxo4570 4 жыл бұрын
Thamires Vaz even if your just relying on google (which is an odd thing to do when today there are several different resources for information) it comes down to being about inclusivity. If you google women of Gabon, women of Sudan etc. you WILL get the results she was looking for. Even when you look at celebrities, there are a lot of black celebrities who come from all over the world. And why just stick to women? There is Rihanna, Lupita, Nima Tang, Jackie Aina, Amara LaNegra and many more. It would have helped her black subscribers understand what contrast looks like on them if they had as many exemples as there were for white people but there were only 3. It doesn’t even matter what country they came from but we should all know by now that lumping all black people to just "AFRICA" is a faux pas based on past ignorance. It’s as if she would’ve just said Europeans, Asians, etc. But she didn’t, because we know you can’t just lump all Europeans into one category they’re not all the same. It’s just disappointing.

To anyone surprised people were offended, they were likely seeing the video in a different light than intended. I think instead of shutting people down and telling them not to be offended, we should encourage content creators to explain what they mean in depth; not only does it clear up any miscommunications, but it informs their audience far more than if they were to be closed lipped and insensitive to their viewers. What Aly did was very mature and I’m happy she takes constructive criticism well.

@@alt4374 I know, what you are getting at. We hear that often .... don't say African.... But, is that really a reason to be offended? Wouldn't it be enough just to point out, that it would have been nice, to have at least some regions mentioned? I mean, everybody is so easily offended, because of all that requirements to recognise everybody and be politically correct, but that seem to drive people more far away from each other. everything seems to be a kind of attack. that is, because we still haven't learned, how to deal with these things. it is helpful to speak out, but it is absolutely ok, to take the things, as what they meant to be as well. I mean, it is not like, the whole world is constantly faced with the different regions of Africa and it's people in the regular mass media or the cinema. yes, I find, one at least could have gone by region. on the other side, so many we know, live in the US and there origin is hard to tell most of the time anyway. But, so many, who don't even know the countries of Europe, has the Klischee picture of a Swedish or Irish women. and it helped to see differences in contrast and also rendered an interesting trivia fact about read haired people. and that is, what it was. PS: I never believed that all Africans, with black or as I saw it mostly, dark brown skin colour look alike . I was born 1971 and live in the middle of Europe and even I did recognise differences early on (I was 9 years, I guess). it took me quite some time to figure out, the most distinct differences. Still, I cannot tell, if somebody is from Ruanda or Burundi. but I can see the difference between Tunesien and Marocain very easily. Because of those people who live here in my city, plus the impact from the cinema and TV - so many French films. Still, it is not important to mention the different look between Tunesien and Marocain women in videos like this. It doesn't add to the knowledge about contrast

Do you know how valuable your work is. Because you go so deep into making your system. You are so intent on making your system so very correct for every woman. It's so difficult, and I appreciate your work. 12 seasons, seem right to me. Yes, you can separate women into many, many catagories. But you can put a white women, a brown woman and a black woman into the same catagory if the 3 qualities are balanced the same way. If their body colors are muted and cool with sharp contrast.....that is their recipe for colors for each of them to wear - for example. Their race or nationality should't matter. If there are women of all shades of color in their skin are all Warm/Bright/ with High contrast. Then that's what works for each of them. It will work.

Aly, I was so excited about your contrasts video because I could never understand or see what the four seasons meant. I thought it was very insightful to try to look at colors in the way that they absorb light and all that stuff. Also, I saw the countries as just different nuclei (just found out that nuclei is the plural of nucleus lol) of diversity. Regardless of countries, we have to remember all of us have the same biological roots, more or less. The way our genes mixed together created all the diversity we have around us today. Countries are societal categories and they have nothing to do with the contrast subject, they are just 'homes' of people who are alike. I think of countries like tribes almost: just people who stayed in that particular place, and people who moved or were raised there. Again, I didn't feel like that was the way you wanted to categorize things. I appreciate that you tried to talk about people who are not celebrities SO MUCH because it was really helpful, seeing as celebrities are usually pretty 'manufactured', 'edited' humans, so to speak. I find your general perspective to be very refreshing and I am glad to be part of this movement of eye-openness that you are creating. Thank you so much for your imput. I'm looking forward to your next thoughts!

Thank you for taking the time to explain your extensive research, study, and point of view. It makes me appreciate how much time you devote to making these videos. That makes me like you even more. I was not offended but just confused by the first video. If I may, some of the offense might be from people who aren't typically included in the seasonal color analysis (like me) or other body/beauty typing that is supposed to be for "everybody," but it's just for a certain group of people. This omission, when I was younger, made me feel ugly because I wasn't like "everybody" else. Now, I realize that certain philosophies or art aren't made for me. I can find something that is, invent it myself, or keep it moving. Seasonal color analysis rarely includes people from different ethnicities, like black women from the United States, for example. I have had to ignore traditional seasonal color analysis or just guess. Thank you for your bravery in tackling such an interesting, but complicated subject. And I hope you travel the world and meet those of us who are interested in your views and love learning from you.

Aly I've watched you for years and always love the way you approach aesthetics/bodies/fashion and how you see the beauty in everything. Your contrast video was one of my favourite videos as you showed "real" differences in the world and not just celebrities. I travel for a living and am so interested in photography so your video was inspiring for me. I also grew up in a multicultural and colonised country with grandparents from 4 different countries so am fascinated by you showing images from these countries. Obviously it's a generalisation and it's impossible to mention all nationalities and looks. I was shocked when I went to the comments after - I would never even consider being offended by your video. I'm sorry you felt that you had to apologise! Keep doing what you're doing, gain more knowledge yes, but please don't change. 🙏

You raise some great questions Aly! I do agree that the seasons are for everybody. I only just realized that I am a shaded soft Summer, when all this while I thought I was a cool Winter. But I am quite dusty, as a child I was blonde, then ashy blonde, and by the time I was a teenager my hair turned dusty deep brown. On your scale, I am probably between 0 and +1. Also my eyes are dark greyish-blue. I am a bit similar to Kate Middleton in coloration (but not exact), and look great in the colors that she usually wears. Currently I am looking for more grays in my wardrobe as I feel that brings out my particular eye color most.

Love how much effort and work you put in your videos! ❤️ You are absolutely my favorite, always waiting for your videos doll! Regarding to the video I can add that 1. As a Latina, it's hard to relate with the rules of the 12 seasons. I think it can work for everyone BUT it's just easier for white people to identify themselves. 2. Finding my undertone is tricky as a Latina, I have a clear olive skin, tan easily, very dark brown eyes and hair purple and blue green veins, NC20 Mac foundation with yellow undertones lol still I am deep winter. My face looks amazing in those colors. I never felt related to deep autumn colors so I just trusted my gut and went for deep winter. I am medium to High contrast and black and bright colors look good on me.
