In English, "minor piece" refers to a bishop or knight. For example, at 2:25 it is incorrect to say that Black is a minor piece down - he is a pawn down. There's a big difference.

Hi D M, you are absolutely right.. what you say is correct.. I could have said this differently.

Very useful video...thanks a lot. NOTE to viewers: sometimes when you hear "pin", read that is "fork."

Hello. This is extremely thorough and I appreciate it. I do have one question. At 10:57, isn't white able to hold the pawn with Kb3?

Hi Ant... this is one of my very early analysis on the Scandinavian. The sound is very bad but besides that the explanations go quite in depth. Yes, Kb3 is possible but black can also come in with a check and can give the pawn up. Once the king takes, black can clear up the entire queenside and just look at the position of the white king and compare it to that of black's. It's a bit strange this clip though has not attracted too many views.

Nice two part video 'series', although with this one I was surprised to hear referring to a pawn as 'a minor piece' (I thought knights and bishops were minor pieces, not pawns). Cheers

you are right Ronald.. in other languages a pawn is a piece. In English, this is a restricted situation. A pawn in fact should be given a different name than just a pawn; everything has its own name. A Queen is a major piece, rooks are pieces, Bishops and Knights are minor pieces but this is only in the English language.

@@GMThechesspuzzler Thanks for your reply. English is not my native language, but 99,9% of my chess books, chess video's, chess websites that I subscribe to, etc. are in English (so to me, English is THE chess language) and even in the Dutch language one refers to a pawn as just that: a pawn, not a piece. Also, if in the English language a pawn is not called a piece, and you're talking English in your video's, why call a pawn a piece then? That's not logical, is it? Anyway, love your video's, so, as far as I'm concerned you shouldn't change anything, because then your work would loose some of it's charm. Regards and best wishes!
