It is because you put the gambit question into every move. Is it not a logical line that the opponent can reckon fast. So, if you got preparation time, you can acheive great sucess. cheers

Hi Moshe.. that is the best news I heard the entire month.. if not the year... I am just a bit concerned about the sound quality. I have since upped the sound quality and made changes to nearly everything.. from intro to end. Indeed, this clip has been one that goes way too far into those depths, which not too many people like. The Scandinavian is one of my absolute favorites. There are a few things that were left out but I am very happy you enjoyed it. I just looked at this clip and am just so tempted to redo it.

Hey CP hope you're doing well. I don't know if you're still answering questions but I'll give it a go. At 11:54 you say white is "forced" to play Q g4 to prevent a mate, but, would not Q d1+ win the bishop and stop the mate anyway? Great video, learned a lot.

Gambling material for active pieces and counterplay is playable in blitz. But you only covered the losing moves for white. It is not hard to find interesting lines if you assume white plays badly. Instead of 5. Qa5+, white plays a3 and black is close to losing. Lichess database shows a3 is played twice as much as Qa5+. Unlike the description proposes, you discuss a sideline, and even then, you fail to include the main continuation of the sideline. Go to a casino if you want to gamble and make it clear to your audience that you will discuss a bad sideline.

Lichess database shows a3 is played twice as much as Qa5+. ------------------ Obviously, this line isn't for everyone, in every kind of game. But check out how frequently players rated under 1800 play Qa5+ in blitz and rapid. It's still not the first move, but a pretty close second. Same for the notion that a3 is "almost winning". No, it's not. In quick games rated under 1800, a +1.5 computer eval is inconsequential. The game is as good as even, you just pull the knight back and play a normal game. Meanwhile, if the opponent bites and checks with the queen (which they do over a third of the time), you get an extremely sharp position that you know all the tricks in, giving you a massive advantage. So this is a good line for the vast majority of chess players. Only exception is the small percentage who play the game at expert level or above. They of course are not the target audience for this video.

Hi I am a beginner... Can you explain why on 1:26 you disregard developing the bishop as a good move for white? I think that's what most beginners would do as white perhaps? Is it relevant that if bishop check is blocked with pawn C6 the knight can not be developed later on?.. Thanks

Biggest problem i have with this opening is when white does not commit to d5, and instead plays the correct a3 meaning black is trailing by a considerable amount. Any variation that still equalises after that?

at move 3 my opponent play Nc3. whts the ebst continuation, since i simply continued with Nxd5. then he played Nxd5. I continued with Qxd5...

I think Nxd5 is best continuation. Second best is c6, dxc6, Nxc6. Whichever continuation, you gain 1 tempo

Yes, this is risky, but I have indeed defeated a stronger player than me in a regular league game with this line. After ten moves or so he lost the queen and resigned. Even if a3 is played instaed of the queen move to h4 the game is not necessarily lost for black, at least in my region of 1500 elo players.

On the position at 24:24, you say that black is winning. I do not agree as even if black has two pawns, he still has a lot of issues to solve. The rook is attacked, the queen is on the same line as the white rook, the knight is on the edge of the board. All white pieces are very active and none of black's are. There is a direct threat of moving the e3 bishop away, pinning the bishop on e7 and threatening Rxe7 Qxe7 Qxa8. So you are basically forced to play Qf8 or Qd8 as black (Rd8 intending Rd7 next move to hold on the bishop will end up having all your pieces tied down to the defence and white will be free to do whatever he wants on the board. Honestly, after Qd8 or Qf8, I would be really happy to be white. The simple Bf4 unleashes the threat of Bxe7 Qxe7 Qxa8 and you are asked strongly to play Rb8 to try and find some activity against the b2 pawn. I do not see where black has an advantage there. If anything, the position is equal and much harder to play for black. I think you should spend more time evaluating positions and less time analyzing crushing lines. We don't need to spend 10mn on lines where the black king is alone in the center and none of white pieces are developped. Discussing what should be done in such positions however would be much more useful.

Hi ApiolJoe.. yes the a3 has now been explained... and this was indeed intentional... good that you picked on this point. It shows some people like yourself pick on every small detail and that is what we are looking for.... I will still need to get back to you on the issue of the two pawns... it is a long long way and I am not sure a short explanation will do the trick. Obviously, I can have the black pieces and you have the white ones and we can play this one out!

Indeed he has analysed this subvariation badly.But according to engines,just a few moves earlier after Nf3 and NxN by black,then QxN,black has c5! and the evaluation is -1.00 which means,strong advantage for black.

Yes, it is risky, but sometimes you get tired of playing the same old same old. If you play this, you've got to play with at attacking mind set. Otherwise, you end up worse because you're a pawn down. It's an opening to play for fun.

I guess that after 5.a3 all you can do is accuse your opponent for being a chicken, and resign. Heck, even 5.Qa4+ N8c6 6.a3 is bad for Black... Basically the whole 4...Nb4 cheapo does not stand up to serious scrutiny.

Παναγιώτης Φρεντζάς My best guess, given the fact that the video starts saying "White has committed a huge blunder", he is assuming white does not know the lines and so would likely aggress on the other Knight, I'm not sure I would, but I'm sure I would not be able to calculate that far into the game to see d5 as a mistake. But I'm pretty bad at chess anyway, I've been playing for less than a week, so what do I know! I can tell you that from my (admissibly ignorant) perspective, on a first glance d5 looks nice because it creates some structure, and seems to put pressure on the pinned Knight, so I guess this might be a good line against weaker players(?)

Hi Dennis.. it is indeed but just take it from me, you do need to know how to play this opening and since we are talking about an opening that is not even been played at top level chess, you are not likely to see it unless you study it very closely. The a3 move had been discussed earlier.

Hi narayan.. thank you. The modern Scandinavian is extremely tricky for all of us and this is why this is my favourite opening because there are plenty of surprising elements embedded into it. I have just looked at this video but do please excuse the primitive audio quality. The newer videos do have at least a much better sound quality to it.
