The SCAR-L / SCAR 16S in 5.56 is such an interesting weapon. It came at a time when the M-4's reputation was dubious amongst many in the Military community. Although the SCAR-L ultimately fell out of usage with the Military it is still none the less in usage amongst certain units in the US Military such as the 75th Ranger Regiment.

"If you don't train, you're still just gonna be a really valuable loot drop for somebody." Amazing, and too true. Agree with all points. I love my SCAR-L, but it's really wild that I needed to spend so much in upgrades on something that was already so expensive from the factory. Great content as always.
@anthonyfanella6523

Its not wild if you did your research on something that's essentially a waste of money and then knowingly spent a substantial amount of money trying to make it better. That's just called stupidity.
@ChestersHobbies
@ChestersHobbies 2 жыл бұрын
@@anthonyfanella6523 Eh, to each his own. I did my research and I was fine with spending the money because it was a fun grail gun for me and I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford it. I don't think it's stupid to spend money on something you like if you can afford it and it's what you want to do, but that's just my opinion.
@colesisler582
@colesisler582 2 жыл бұрын
I would question “needed to”. You didn’t need to spend any more money on this rifle. It has its short comings given the price tag but it’s still properly capable nonetheless. It’s an extremely legit and extremely formidable gun from the factory. You ‘wanting’ to spend more money to make it something you really like? I totally get it.
@ChestersHobbies
@ChestersHobbies 2 жыл бұрын
@@colesisler582 That's fair, you're not wrong. Kind of a semantics issue here I guess, as I didn't "need" the rifle in the first place. I suppose a longer form of what I was trying to say is that I "needed" to spend extra money to get the rifle where I "wanted" it. Which as previously stated, I knew going in after doing my research and I was fine with it. I just didn't care for how the gun was setup from the factory, much like GT discussed in this video, so my comment in the end was merely agreeing with him as I had a similar experience. Not trying to ruffle feathers. It's a great gun any way you shake it, but it was a gun I'd always wanted and I wanted to make it the best version for me that it could be, which just happened to involve a lot of changes on an already expensive gun. But again, I knew that going in, so it's fine. Just interesting I suppose.

FN and HK are some of the most over priced and over hyped guns. Only owners who've used more than a few competing rifles are able to realize that you can buy *better* piston guns for even half the price. Only reason to buy SCARs or HK416/MR556A1 is purely for brand lol. There are better alternatives, and the price they demand is unreasonable for the product. And when it comes to H&K everything they have is egregiously overpriced on the market. The SP5 (semiauto MP5 pistol), is like $3,000 lol. For a stamped sheet metal blow back gun they designed in the 1960's... There are MP5 clones that are half the price and use the same manufacturing equipment. And frankly H&K are anti-freedom. They are within their capabilities to manufacture everything they need in the USA and sell pretty much any of their weapons designs without worry of regulations, and make insane amounts of money. But they don't. They have no problem taking cartel money, but they have a corporate philosophy that dislikes civilian gun ownership and freedom. SIG and Walther aren't like this.
@londonjolly9174
@londonjolly9174 2 жыл бұрын
@@weasle2904 Generally speaking, yes. Some FN ARs aren't terribly priced for what you get, but most of their 'cool' products are (PS90, 5/7, SCAR, etc.). HK is mostly over priced for nothing, the USP being the only firearm from them I'd consider fair at used prices. Their 416 and UMP semis are laughable in price-to-performance, and the SP5 is just overpriced flat out.

Paying for brand name most likely. Especially as the R&D is long paid off. Along with their other long standing lines. Then you have guys like Ruger or Keltec walk up and make a good alternative that in many ways is a notch up for realistic price.

My Belgian 16S is decent for grouping but the LaRue upper was sub MOA out of the box even with 55gr WWB. With 77gr SMK commercial loads the LaRue is a tack driver. Get some rail panels for the fore end. I went with the Tangodown SCAR panels because that's what originally came on the MK16 kits. I tried the MREX but it adds too much weight and I have no need for the extra mounting points. PMM makes a nifty Picatinny extension that replaces the lower barrel support yoke and extends the rails.

@@ericmckinley7985 The problem is FN doesn't really make that much money from government contracts. That was a big reason why they started producing M4 uppers for the American public via Palmetto, because they needed new income streams since they got ripped off on the PDW contract which was supposed to carry them throughout the decade. FN's income largely comes from their other brands like Browning and Winchester. H&K went downhill because they only relied on gov contracts. People talk about the MIC, but the truth is there isn't much money to be made in the military as it is a lot of money split across a lot of companies. I've owned a SCAR 16 for about 10 years. I think you really nailed the pros and cons of this system. @@wendellsawyer4386 It is gouging. The SCAR is very cheap to manufacture, in fact the whole reason it was submitted to the ACR trial was on the feature that producing a SCAR takes less machine time than forging an AR, and this is because it uses cheap aluminum extrusions and an injection molded lower. If you take apart a SCAR, you can see how easy it is to machine in comparison to an AR. Even with the AR benefiting from the economy of scale, the SCAR is 3x overpriced. FN also doesn't really back their products unlike say Ruger, Kel Tec, S&W, etc.

Yeah they're abnoxious, but get away with it because a lot of people will think it's the best just BECAUSE it's $3k. I admit that I was interested in one when looking for a "pistol" and wanted a piston driven mechanism for reliability with the shorter length. I looked at the SIG MCX line but didn't like the spotty track record and SIG's love of public bet beta testing their products while still charging a premium. The scar was an obvious consideration, but again the cost/value equation seemed hard to justify without putting a "cool factor" thumb on the scale. Then I stumbled across the RA XCR-L which is the gun that the scar SHOULD have lost to. $2K and it feels like good value: everything beautifully fit and finished and built like a tank. It's another AK/AR love child, but I think it's actually better than either of it's parents. First non-custom gun I've taken out of the box and not immediately had the urge to change in some way... And it avoids literally all of Grand Flannel's critiques of the scar. Only catch is that it took damn near a year of waiting.

I bought my SCAR-16S in 2007 or 2008. Well over 15k rounds (probably getting close to 20k) and I have only 2 issues. I had one FTF because of a bad mag. Also, once when I was shooting brown bear ammo, the extractor popped open and in such a way that it could not cycle. I have never seen anything it ever before but I just aggressively racked it until it closed and it was fine. I have never had any parts break or wear out. With the exception if changing the grip, changing the charging handle, and putting a Geissle Super SCAR in it, the gun is factory OEM. Its been a good rifle.

I've had my SCAR16 for a long long time and tried the ACR stock, and went back to the factory stock. I've put it through its paces, and has about the same reliability as a DI AR15. Still have to keep that chamber clean. I've also replaced the stock gas screw (wasn't fun, as it was carboned in place and had to extract it). After working intimately with the SCAR (as in taking everything apart and putting it back together properly with the green Loctite 603), I'd say the SCAR is a prima donna platform. Fun and cool, but it's a prima donna IMHO. I've tried all the different aftermarket parts for it (grip, stock, foreend, etc...) and ended up going back to stock with the Tangodown grip and Tangodown panels. Since the factory aluminum lower barrel support stripped out at the threads, the replacements were out of stock. FN makes an aluminum and steel, and neither are available currently. Their complete barrel assemblies are now all US made and use steel supports. Mine is Belgian and was aluminum. Anyhow, one of the aftermarket houses makes the Picatinny extension that actually uses thread-serts and replaces the stock barrel support, so I went with that (might have been PMM) and it's a good solid fit for the stock foreend and solved my problem at the same time. Lessons learned is not to follow the maintenance manual torque specs for those particular screws. As for barrels and precision, the SCAR 16 isn't statistically better than your average AR15. It's not bad, but it's not a tack driver out of the box. I have a complete 18" SCAR assembly that I haven't tried yet. I've used a number of different optics on the SCAR as well. I bought a LaRue upper just recently and that LaRue upper is sub-MOA out of the box even with 55gr Winchester Whitebox. I've never had a 5.56/.223 rifle that precise. It was a tack driver with good 77gr SMK commercial loads. SCAR16 is a fun gun, but if I had to do it all over again, I'd just go with a LaRue complete rifle (or two). Maybe get the SCAR for the cool factor. The SCAR's barrel is fairly standard, nothing exotic. The LaRue uses a polygonal bore which is kind of interesting. Very precise out of the box which impressed me the most.
