Brilliant sketch. We didn't do a Shakespearean play in school. We did a Father Ted play. I'm guessing that the fact that the priest is holding a copy of "War and Peace" is meant to be a subtle joke since Shakespeare didn't write that either!

We didn't either. We did Charles Dicken's A Christmas Carol, Sleeping Beauty and an old time music hall (which couldn't have been more boring. Wasn't exactly The Good Ol' Days).

We did a play called "Pater Noster". It starts mildly amusing (from what I remember) but turns super creepy at the end. Everyone had a good laugh until the murder when they went all silent (yes, there's a murder, with that title). Everyone walked off the room a bit in shock and my literature professor (who organised the play) stood by the door seeing them with a smile like a cat who swallowed a fat mouse. I think he had an evil sense of humour.

Oh I remember when we did midsummer night's dream. The teacher left the costume design up to us... so we went a bit more traditional... the fairies all had pretty wings and such... turns out the teacher had envisioned a post-modern version set in space, so the set and costumes did not match in the slightest... it was chaos but it was fun :D

Titus Andronicus as a school play??? I’d be curious to see how they’d do that...
@djune2864 жыл бұрын
We did Titus Andronicus in our school play. We had to direct and write it ourselves and perform it in 20-30 minutes. There were four groups in our class who all had to do an adaptation of a Shakespeare play. We picked Titus Andronicus. I had seen it on TV and it had made quite an impression. I got the abbreviated version from the library for the others to read and they were quickly convinced that this could be fun. We put the thing together in a week (30-40 hours) and then performed it on Friday afternoon. Great fun, lots of fake blood and giggles. We did not show the rape scene on stage of course, she was just carried off by the guys but you cold hear her scream (we had pre-taped it so it would be extra loud). Later she came back on stage with her hands hidden in her sleeves with fake blood dripping from her stumps and mouth and we used an old cabbage patch kid doll for the stew. I do remember our teachers and other students being rather surprised about our little production.

@Rusty Shackleford I’ve heard stories about high school football teams in Texas having Jumbotrons and whatnot while the English department has had to go to the booster clubs for copies of books on the curriculum etc. Not sure if you’re familiar with Ireland or the context here, but basically a lot of the big rugby playing schools in Dublin are private and very well-resourced, as are their rugby teams. Not so much the case in other parts of the country, most of the time.
