What’s the best shot in basketball? Neil deGrasse Tyson and co-hosts Chuck Nice and Gary O’Reilly break down the physics behind what makes the Skyhook so effective, as well as one of the greatest eras with basketball greats, Jamaal Wilkes, Michael Cooper, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
How do you stay the all-time scoring leader, 30 years later? Neil and Kareem break down the physics of the shot and what makes it so devastating. How many of Kareem’s career points can be attributed to the Skyhook? We hear anecdotes on the 1980’s Lakers and what they attribute their success to. Was it the laws of physics?
Does practice make perfect? We discuss the role of humility on the team and what it was like to be the best in the game. Why has the skyhook disappeared from today’s basketball? We explore the rise of the 3-point shot and how it has changed present-day basketball. What will the next trend in gameplay be? All that, plus, learn about the only 3-point shot Kareem sank in his entire career.

I understand having Gary on as soccer/football is a sport played worldwide. But as of late there are some other sports that are also enjoyed around the world, skiing (snow), basketball, tennis, swimming, golf and baseball. Almost all from youth up until old age, intensity more so as young and slower as we age. To have some athletes from these sports to offer a different perspective would be interesting. There are similar skills and stamina necessary but many times a complete different skill set is necessary. I recall a photo from back in the 60s-70s where Carl Yastrzemski was so focused that you could see his vision zeroed in on the baseball just a fraction of a second before it makes contact with the bat. I’m not sure how fast the swinging bat was moving but the baseball was in the 90mph+. That’s focus and concentration. It would be the same for other sports but in different ways. Watching Pete Maravich moving on the basketball court whether passing or shootings was a ballet of sports not seen before at that consistent level.

Holger Geschwindner mathematician and physicist by training and Dirk Nowitzki's trainer is also worth checking out. Thanks to his background he was able to reverse engineer the ballistics and mechanics of the perfect shot. He set up robots to test the perfect shot sequence for Dirk's body. This made Dirk one of the finest shooters of the league having internalized those models. Later Dirk invented a new kind of shot the deadly step-back.

If the NBA outlawed the “slam-dunk” you’d see the the “skyhook and others returned. Wasn’t the “dunk” outlawed when Jabber entered college to level the field for everyone else because of his dominance in the paint. So he had to develop his other shots and this became his “go to shot”. Not entirely clear if this was the case but I do remember something about this restriction? on this but I do seem to recall something like this
@mavfan1
@mavfan1 2 жыл бұрын
Not true. There is essentially no dunk in women’s basketball but you don’t see the skyhook, just layups and uncontested threes.
@hamdoggius
@hamdoggius 2 жыл бұрын
@@mavfan1 Wrong, the 3 point shot didn't exist at the time either. Three pointers have replaced the skyhook as they are worth more points with less risk than the skyhook. The dunk WAS banned from 67 to 76, likely inspired by Jabbar's dominance at the rim.

Yeah I sped through the whole thing quickly just to see what you guys were chatting about and I can say with 100% confidence that the term “muscle memory” was never used in any of it. The hook shot isn’t used because nobody practices it and yet cream Abdul Jabbar just said that Meadowlark(and I’ve met a female who could do this as well consistently) can hook from half court so there goes your three point theory out the window. Because it’s the exact same thing that Montana Elway Favre Manning etc. do they just know how to let it go after you do it enough times

The Skyhook nowadays will be outshot by threes. Simple as that. Also being inside the paint exposes players to higher risk of getting injured. Just like in warfare, you don't want to be near that warzone anymore.
@jmanj3917
@jmanj3917 2 жыл бұрын
19:30, I wonder what the different "expected values" would be between KAJ's Skyhook and the total of three point and two point shots taken by today's players. [For Example: 1: A modern player shoots from the field with under 50% accuracy on average (+/- 47% for the 2020-2021 season). Their expected value is their percentage of "hits" times the number of points per successful shot (which is closer to 2 points per bucket than it is to 3 points, for most shooters), times the number of shots taken. So the expected value would be a little over one point per shot, times shots taken 2. Kareem shot only from the 2-point range, so his expected value per shot would be 2 times his accuracy percentage, times shot number. At his lifetime average of 56%, KAJ was "good for" 1.12 points per shot, times the number of shots taken.] This leads me to believe that the Skyhook is at least as successful at consistently generating points as is the modern approach of taking higher risk (lower percentage of success) shots. And, maybe the fact that Kareem still holds the title for most points ever in an NBA career attests to this possibility as well.

You also have to add in fouls. You're much more likely to be fouled around the basket than at the 3 point line which can add even more to the points per shot. Especially considering the only way to really guard the skyhook was to either come from behind or hard foul.
@KC.801
@KC.801 2 жыл бұрын
@@ryanseward2760 which is better 3 points for 2 shots if you actually get a and 1 which is unlikely if your shooting a sky hook and get fouled so it’s most like 2 points for 2 shots or 3 points for 1 shot 🤷‍♂️
@ryanseward2760
@ryanseward2760 2 жыл бұрын
@@KC.801 except the 3 point shot is a much lower percentage of being made. Plus by drawing fouls you weaken the other team often making interior baskets even easier. So no, that record is not going to be beaten by a heavy 3 point shooter any time soon.
@KC.801

* If the Milky Way moves 1.3 million miles per hour through space then what if we could make something stationary in space like make an object go 0mph in space. And what is space like at 0mph. And if the Big Bang is making everything explode away. Then this is what gives us “0 gravity” moving threw space at the same seed as the Milky Way and the vacuum effect in space is caused by the moving momentum in space literally pulling the air out of our bodies. So what would happen if you put an object in space moving at 0mph and would the physics be different there
