What is Catch Rate in Pokemon? What about the Modified Catch Rate? The capture method? Ball-chance? Why is there so much math in my Pokemon?
This video hopes to explain the evolution of Pokemon catching, how the programming of the formula has changed over several generations. Get ready for numbers! Hopefully they're correct!
Gnoggin, hosted by its creator Lockstin, is a show delving into the mysteries of Pokemon! (and other games sometimes too). Explaining everything there is to explain! Why is each Pokemon given the type it has? What are their origins? What is the lore of the Pokemon world and the design inspirations? And what does it all have to do with alchemy? Let's Go find out!

Isn't the ball shake equation in gen 2 not M for Mumber (randomly generated) but A for answer to the previous equation? Also the dark grass chart in gen V indicates that the more pokemon you've captured the EASIER it is to capture a pokemon, not harder. Its just that to make it comparable to normal grass you need to have caught 600 or more.

The reason why they got rid of square roots could be because its a very expensive operation in terms of performance and there doing 2 in a row. This was a very big topic in the 90's where Doom creator John Carmack created the "Inverse Square Root" operation which made that games 3D possible. Very interesting topic and many programmers even got confused because on the surface it seemed to do nothing but worked. As a game programmer I never use square roots, even in distance checks which happen a lot for things such as collision.

@taylorchesser8990

Fun fact! Gen II's Moon Ball adds a multiplier to the catch formula by checking if the target evolves with a Moon Stone; however, the check is bugged and actually looks for Pokémon that evolve with a Burn Heal. Since no Pokémon evolve with a Burn Heal, it always adds a x1 multiplier. In other words, it's functionally no different from a Poké Ball!

For anyone wondering why it's so complicated and not just a simple equation, like rolling a 256 dice and saying "you get it for certain numbers" It's precisely BECAUSE they don't want you figuring it out. They want it to be complicated so you can't game it. It still FEELS like you're getting better odds by weakening+statusing, but you can't figuring out exactly by how much.
@Ylurple

Dragonfree on the Cave of Dragonflies has an awesome catch rate calculator for each gen, plus she has a ton of research on all of the formulas. She found that the apricorn balls are heavily messed up in gen 2, like how the Love ball increases chance of catching a pokemon with the same gender as your pokemon, the fast ball gives you a x4 multiplier on grimer, tangela, and magnemite and no one else, and the moon ball gives you increased chances of catching pokemon that evolve with a burn heal.

21:58 I also see the equations as extremely arbitrary, especially in the early gens. Even with their limited space way back in gen 1, they could have done a more simple code: If not masterball, then Solve for C = (pokemon catch rate)((pokemon max hp - pokemon hp currently gone) / (pokemon current hp)) Solve for N = generate # between 0 and (max combination for the current pokemon based off of it's base max hp) and divide by ball modifier and status condition [obviously, these conditional things would be nerfed to not break the game] If C < N, catch pokemon If C = N, reroll N If C > N, do not catch pokemon

From what i have read about catching math is that you have to do another calculation with A (at least in the newer generations) to get your actual catching chance: (A/255)^0.75. So the actual chance for catching this pikachu is about 59% (which seems more resonable for half HP and only a Pokéball).

In gen 7 a Pokémon could actually have a negative or zero catch rate(I’m not sure which one) because I’m pretty sure they removed the “no zero or below catch rate” thing for at least the heavy ball and since the heavy ball can give the catch rate a -20 it could end up being zero or below

This entire time I thought the amount of shakes was purely based on how close the catch equation was to the target number. To give a simple example, you role a d20, and you need a 15 to catch the pokemon. If you role a 14, it shakes 3 times before popping out. If you role a 1, it doesn't shake at all before popping out. So there's only one equation needed. I suppose, you may need a second equation to calculate how close the role was to the target number, but it would be a very simple one compare to what they apparently decided to do.

I remember in red blue and yellow when you're trying to catch the legendary birds that the ball will actually miss and same thing when going through the Safari zone sometimes

I think just a few graphs highlighting the relationship between various bits of the formulas could vastly improve the understandability of this stuff.

being in CS1 right now I can (kind of) understand how this would be coded out (at least for gen 1, the newer gens sound waaay more complicated).

Are you sure about the gen 1 shake code? Cuz as far as I can tell, assuming the HP and ailments are the same every time, the shakes will always be the exact same if you fail to catch the Pokémon, no randomness there
@antialiasis
@antialiasis 3 жыл бұрын
That's true in R/B/Y! You can try it yourself - if the Pokémon's HP and status and the ball you're using don't change, the ball will always shake the same number of times on failure. If you throw Poké Balls at a full-health legendary, for instance, it will *always* say that the ball missed if it fails - no randomness at all, no chance of one, two or three shakes.

Really interesting video, thanks! Side note, I definitely had pokeballs missing when trying to catch legendaries in gen 1.

I think that while PEMDAS does help in these equations, it's not needed as much since they use Parenthesis and a Fraction, which makes the MD of PEMDAS WAYYY easier

It would be really interesting if you went over how calculations are done in the older pokemon games how everything in the game could be predetermined depending on your game seed using trainer ID and time of day to distinguish what RNG level your game is at to be able to manipulate all functions in the game (See heartgold/soul silver speedruns or play any GBA rom hack and spam save states)

Glad to see you cover Gen 1 Balls missing entirely. In my experience, this only ever happened if I tried to catch a legendary Pokémon without weakening it first. Especially when doing the Mew glitch in Cerulean City, if you don’t damage it (which I tend to avoid since) it’s at level 1 for the EXP under flow glitch), the first handful of balls will miss.

Am I dumb or did the thing change for Gen 1? With Bulbasaur he said that the closer the Random Number was to 255 the higher chance of a catch, but with Dragonair it was closer to 0. Was there just a change that I missed???

Going out of math class to watch poke-math Also, I'm coding something so when he said using a lot of if-statements is common for inexperienced programmers my mind instantly went to one of my more complex functions (javascript). It uses 1 main if statement and then for the first option three inside of it. which makes a for-loop that uses an if-statement inside. 7 if-statements in 1 function. If you don't have any clue what I'm talking about if-statement: if this do this if else do this else do this for-loop: its literally looping some code

The master ball aside, the timer ball is the best Pokéball for catching legendaries after either 4 or 7 turns depending on whether the battle is in a dark place. In a dark place the next best Pokéball is the dusk ball, which the Timer ball beats after turn 7. In a place that isn't dark the next best Pokéball is an ultra ball, which the timer ball beats after just 4 turns. These calculations are relevant to gens 5 through 7, and most likely 8.
