a similar thing happens to me when I listen/read things about ocd. It’s so interesting but always triggers me making my anxiety and compulsions so bad 😬 I’m not sure if this is quite what you meant but I thought I’d share my experience either way in case it makes someone feel less alone ❤️

What Luke was describing sounds like a stim, rather than a tick. Stimming is self stimulating behavior, something that everyone does to a certain extent, like hair twirling and beard stroking, but is more common among people with ADHD, autistic people, and some other conditions, and can be more pronounced or unusual than in neurotypical people.
@mtlimitless2265

I actually thought it was a pretty accurate representation of what a tic can be, tics are very similar to stims, but in reality a tic can really be any vocalization or motor movement. Stims are voluntarily done, while tics are completely involuntary. That's the major difference between tics and stims, and thats also how you tell if it's a stim or tic. Now having that been said that is not the only difference between the two. I just wanted to clarify with your information that a tic can be anything involuntary. But yes it definitely sounds like stims or tourettic OCD.

Yeah definitely sounded like stimming to me. It can happen in anyone but especially considering he has had mental health issues, anxiety is one that can also cause it, but obviously it's more common in adhd or autism, or other neurodiverse people. But as someone with anxiety i find myself with a compulsion to do things occasionally like shake my legs when i lay down in bed. It makes you feel comfortable essentially. Self soothing. That's what i got it from luke's anyway. Without him going to a professional about it, we wouldnt know what it is

I was just gonna comment that it sounded like a stim to me too! Stims I’m my experience can be both voluntary and involuntary, but that doesn’t mean it’s involuntary in the same way tics can be. I have both tics and stims and in the beginning it was hard to tell the difference (at least for me), but there definitely is one.

my Tourette's treatment is basically to just treat everything else i have so I'm less stressed so i tic less. With coprolalia (inappropriate vocalizations like swearing) its just to not suppress them. Luke was actually spot on with the not-wanting-to-say-something-makes-you-tic-it thing if you're just talking about coprolalia.

I think it’s currently described as a disorder but it really shouldn’t be, I personally prefer the term “condition” and I thought it was nice that he said he didn’t think it was a disorder (I’m autistic btw, if that wasn’t clear hahah)

I find it interesting that concentrating hard can make tics less likely because I've realised that the exact same thing happens to me whilst coughing, sometimes when I have a really bad cold I'll play the piano for ages just because I'll be less likely to cough whilst doing it

I don't like to describe myself as having Tourette, since I haven't got an official diagnostic, although it's pretty obvious I do have it, wich leads me to evade questions when people notice my tics and are like "Are you ok?"

I’ve had (noticeable) tics for about a year and a half now. Since i found out that what i had were tics i found out i had them for almost my whole life. The problem is that my parents are pretty hard if the topic is my tics cuz they think that it aren’t tics but just bad habits. I’ve tried to get them to research it and finally see the difference but they haven’t had the time. But since you guys just posted this i’m just gonna show them this and hopefully this will let them notice. This is also definitely the most informative and correct video i’ve seen so far about tourette’s. So thank you so much can’t wait for the next podcast😁

Adhd medication actually tends to worsen tics as it helps a person get more dopamine while Tourette’s is typically treated by decreasing reception of dopamine. I’ve experienced my tics getting worse first hand upon taking my adhd meds. Haha it’s a struggle.

When I take dexedrine /dextroamphetamine it helps reduce stress with its combo effect on my chronic pain, orthostatic intolerance/POTs, and most of all executive function. By reducing stress, the tics are less disruptive, and when they are, I feel less pressure to perform/pretend as if they *weren't* disruptive because of internalized ableism

In Germany there is a really popular KZfaq channel called "Gewitter im Kopf - Leben mit Tourette". One of the 2 one the channel has a very visible form of tourettes (motion as also verbal tics, the verbal once are quite funny) and they make funny as also educational videos. I am kinda proud atm, that i could answer most of the questions from the first half of the video, just because i watch the german channel quite frequently.

I have hiccups very often and I found that if I focus really hard on something (usually an intense stare at a carefully selected object) for maybe 10-20 seconds the hiccups usually go away. I feel like this might be related to the Tourette's tics being fewer while concentrating. Anyways it's really useful to have finally learned how to stop my hiccups, though sadly it doesn't work when I'm too tired to focus long enough.

Someone close to me have Tourette's, they went undiagnosed all the way through childhood. I had met ppl before with mild tourettes and I was like, uhm... hey... this that you do seems oddly familiar. Then we saw a documentary together and the person was like... yeah... could be... Long story short, turns out it runs in their family. The person close to me can supress some vocal tics and then get them all out in a safe environment, no swearing though, fortunately their work place is such an environment. Talking about this has brought siblings closer together now that they can share and understand their tics. I think one of the family members are on meds for it and the others cope without. The person closest to me agrees that it has become better with age, they are now in their mid 30's and have had tics since childhood without knowing what it was. I have to add that this family is a family that does not communicate well... so to me it is no surprise that they hadn't talked about ut before we saw the docu.

I think the whole "half of children with tourette's arent diagnosed" could be explained by other conditions too, my little one has autism and has a lot of stims and 'tics like' behaviour (like echolalia) but it would be really difficult to decipher which it is. Similar with adhd, it's really difficult to diferenciate between what could be adhd and autism when they're pretty similar, especially in neurodivergent children.

31:57 autism is a disorder tho? It’s ASD: autism spectrum disorder. I know some autistic people say it’s not but that doesn’t make sense to me tbh, I actually feel like saying it’s not a disorder kind of invalidates the struggles I go through because of my autism, if that makes sense (but that’s just how I feel of course)
@SciGuys
@SciGuys 3 жыл бұрын
ASD is certainly the name, but I think the pushback is because calling it a disorder gives a negative connotation. Being autistic can definitely lead to struggles in life, but for many people they don’t consider simply being autistic inherently detrimental, the difficulties come from our society not being accessible. This isn’t true for everyone, of course, but the avoidance of outright labelling being autistic as disordered is not meant to invalidate anyone’s struggles!

Almost everyone in my family has tics. My sister lies on the autism spectrum, as does probably my father, who incidentally happens to have Tourette’s, adhd and antisocial personality disorder as well. I don’t know for certain whether the elder members of my family qualify for the Tourette’s diagnosis, although it wouldn’t surprise me one bit. I’ve had tics throughout my whole life, be it because of autism, adhd, or the obsessive compulsive vein which runs in me, I don’t know. Although I am 100% certain that I have the Tourette’s gene in me, I am also sure that I do not have the condition myself. I’m however prepared for my future children to have it as well as other diagnoses which run in my family (chronic depression, personality disorders, autism/Asperger’s, adhd, ocd, etc). I certainly lost the genetic lottery, although as general understanding of these kinds of conditions becomes more widespread and external judgement diminishes, life slowly becomes easier. Love your podcast, lads! It’s a welcome distraction as well as a learning opportunity for those of us who no longer attend school - all of this whilst simultaneously being entertaining! Keep at it. I will continue to tune in for future episodes.
