“Old Money” - a term that has, as of the last couple of years, seamlessly embedded itself into the digital realm… represents wealth that has weathered countless storms, nurtured through the passage of generations.
Today, "Old Money" has become something of a cultural symbol, sparking significant interest and trending discussions across social media platforms.
The “aesthetic” echoing Ivy League traditions, grand mansions, invaluable antiques, and classic cars have all become part of its captivating appeal.
Yet, dear viewers, let’s separate the substance from the symbol.
The essence of “Old Money” lies not in material possessions, but in a deeply ingrained mindset and the practice of meticulously crafted etiquette.

The upper classes, the ones who often best comprehend the hidden language of “old money,” use ‘summer’ as more than a noun depicting a season - it becomes a verb signifying their privileged lifestyle.
You see, these individuals don’t merely “experience” summer, they proactively ’summer.’
It symbolizes their annual exodus to sunlit sanctuaries like the Hamptons or the French Riviera.
One such intriguing norm is the art of gracefully exiting a social interaction.
‘Old Money’ don’t simply leave; they glide out of situations with subtlety and finesse, often aided by another participant in the conversation.
Contrarily, the ‘New Money’ and other classes may not always pay heed to this nuanced dance of departure.
The lingua franca of the ‘Old Money’ contains a certain joie de vivre, especially when they refer to their travel experiences.
Rarely would you hear them use a mundane term like ‘vacation.’
Instead, they sprinkle their conversation with phrases such as, “When we were in…” followed by the mention of an obscure city or a lesser-known region, rather than a country or a larger area.
This peculiar choice of words serves two distinct purposes.
Within the intricate machinery of high society, ‘Old Money’ families often serve as the lubricant that keeps the wheels spinning smoothly.
One key way they do this is by tactfully introducing individuals to one another, acting as matchmakers for brilliant minds, potential collaborators, or individuals with complementary interests.
This calculated social maneuver isn’t merely about being friendly or well-networked; it’s a strategic play that subtly elevates their status.
In the coded language of the ‘Old Money’, “The Club” holds a significant position.
Vague to an outsider but crystal clear to those within the circle, “The Club” could refer to a country club, a golf club, a yacht club, or any other exclusive institution.
The assumption, of course, is that the listener knows exactly which ‘club’ is being referred to, subtly highlighting that both parties belong to the same exclusive community.
Acting as the puppet masters of a grand social mechanism, they carefully engineer gatherings that are more than mere parties; they’re hotbeds of intellectual exchange, power dynamics, and understated influence.
A notable example of this historical practice is Mrs. Astor and her famed ‘400 List.’
It was the epitome of high society in the late 19th century, consisting of the crème de la crème of New York society.
Within the ‘Old Money’ lexicon, as we have already seen, certain words carry a meaning quite distinct from their dictionary definitions.
Another classic example is the term “Cottage.”
While for most, a ‘cottage’ might conjure images of a cozy, modest dwelling, within the elite circles, it bears a wholly different implication.
In the parlance of the ‘Old Money,’ a “cottage” often refers to a substantial second home, typically nestled in an enviable holiday hotspot.
And lastly, contrary to the popular stereotype of the ‘Old Money’ as aloof or dismissive, they often exude an assumption of good will.

An elderly relative of a very wealthy friend of mine (years ago), once asked me “Who are your people”? I was very confused by her question, so I then began to run through my family’s mixed race heritage… Needless to say, she looked firmly at me and then turned away without another word. That’s because I couldn’t name-drop any stately families or famous people in my family!

Tried to buy? If you know what cashmere feels like it’s not hard to find it at thrift stores. If you find one that’s slightly shrunk (very slightly, not “this will fit my toddler”-shrunk) using hair conditioner can help stretch it back to shape. Anyway, for the summer try to find a linen-silk blend; they are airy and luxurious.

I used to help host banquets and as a result met countless upper-class or "old money" individuals. It is not simply a trend, it is a lifestyle. We learn through observation when we are young, and for exactly this reason, "old money" individuals are born into the lifestyle, it is what every facet of their life consists of. I have also observed that "old money" individuals are business oriented, friendships and partnerships are hardly ever without business commodity. Every relationship is purposeful and serve the family "empire". It is to ensure generational growth and preservation. I read in the comments someone calling these people "psychopaths", which is horrible. I believe there are bad apples in every social group. I've met rude, disingenuous, selfish and snobby people, but I have also met lovely, genuine, kind, helpful, interesting and inspiring individuals in this realm too.

I was a major gift fundraiser, part of the genteel poor but constantly in the presence of wealth. A good part of my career was in Texas where a wealthy person might refer to his or her "farm." It was not a farm in any sense one might normally associate with farm life. And along that line, if you happened to be invited to the "farm," don't expect a show entrance to the property. On the contrary, the more discreet the entrance, the wealthier the owners.

The elements of the video that I find of practical value are: etiquette, (like the graceful exit, introductions, questioning without revealing). Code words are impractical for most people and will sound pretentious when used in the wrong context (which is most of the time). Old money aren't the only group who have hidden language and behaviors, college educated upper middle class North Americans have these as well. They can tell a lot about each other from simple conversations without asking personal questions.

That's a good summary of "education". Every education system I heard about, teaches you how to be a member of your society and class. You learn the facts cherished by your society and the related narratives, you learn how bosses should and will behave (you only call them teachers), you learn the correct way and language to ask and answer and the right things to be able to do- If someone can cite the same poems or dissected like you animals, it makes them faster part of your group as money. But it also seperates them faster from you as simple lack of money.

True, and by not asking personal questions or intrusive questioning you are assumed to be well bred . Which you are. It's basic yet people do it, imagining that having money alone gives them the right. No. It. Does. Not. Making personal remarks is a real howler it's utterly to be avoided. The essence of good manners is to never make anyone feel uncomfortable.

Watching this video highlights for me how much I picked up going to an Ivy League college without even realizing it. Also that one girl who came to class in a fur coat was gauche. You couldn't tell the wealthiest students by such outward displays as fur in a classroom. But the quality of materials used in whatever they wore was top notch. And of course, there were 2 bespoke designer shops on campus. Traveling extensively, constantly thinking of connecting anyone to anyone if you meaningfully can, having parties filled with interesting, accomplished people, with each of them also creating and facilitating connections, well I never thought of this as about legacy wealth. It's just what one does because why not? Life is better this way. One thing you left out though is the downside. I recall how much stress my wealthiest friends were under. Their parents were very controlling and often critical. There's a lot more to what is considered 'etiquette' than these sorts of things in this video. As a sort of guest in that world, I didn't have to deal with any of that downside, other than knowing there was a line for me at marriage past which I was not allowed in.

You are right. I used to talk to a male friend from the South whose family is Old Money (late 1600's). His father was putting so much pressure on him to join him in business pursuits and to marry a certain young lady in whom he was not interested. My friend was really suffering and was losing sleep because he didn't want to disappoint his father and family and yet, he wanted to do something entirely different. I'm glad I never faced that kind of pressure.

@@cynthiaclark8050 Yes I loathe the use of the term 'classy' because it denotes quite the opposite by the person using the term. It's horrible as a term. You either have good taste or you do not, but it can be developed. It's also down to style and flair. Too much good taste is suffocating. Good grooming is far more important than what you are wearing by and large. You can wear something quite modest and understated but if your hair isn't taken care of, nails dirty etc shoes unpolished, clothes dirty or pilled, it's all for nothing. It says something about your personal standards and that's what it's about, not so much what you have. The really worthwhile people are bored by ostentatious displays they want to know who you are but they also don't want to have to manage you.

Parts of that were more accurate than others. I enjoyed the company of a family with multi-generational wealth accumulated over centuries and international fame. In social interactions, they were meticulously courteous to everyone without exception...kind and engaging. Yes, when they hosted, all guests were carefully vetted to be sure that they would enjoy themselves, share interests with other guests, etc. That was much more important than their financial means. The cardinal sin was even subtle discourtesy. If you "rescue" a host or hostess, the one doing the task must be able to substitute himself or someone who accompanied him for the host/hostess. A guest must never be felt to have been abandoned or to be in the least unwelcome. Bottom line: It's all about good manners and that has nothing to do with wealth. Oh, and then there's the art of the thank-you note.

Conversation is warfare collecting intelligence from the other person. I used to be quite open about my background and interests, until I determined that most people used this information as weapons against me. Now, when in a conversational setting, I am very careful about giving out information about my background and activities. I purposely will be vague and neutral, because often, if I speak from the heart when meeting new or casual people, especially high-class people, I feel like an strange insect being analyzed by a biologist, and as something less than human. So, despite my fascinating past, I steer conversation on the present circumstance, and possibly some aspects of future endeavor.

@@kulturfreund6631 yes, but 1 billion in cash, wisely and prudently invested can easily yield $30m - $50m a year much of it tax free. Most people can live comfortably on that yearly income, including expensive private schools. In the old days Land was owned because it produced wealth through tenant farms and agriculture. That time has passed (unless you are King Charles). Now there are numerous ways for your cash to make money away from land ownership. Unless of course your land yields a commodity like oil, gold, diamonds, or cobalt, etc. For example, we purchased several mica mines a few years ago, they produce some limited wealth. But finally there is nothing like good old US treasury bonds, assuming of course that you are a U.S. citizen and therefore benefit from the tax savings.

@@mooshway2000 A lot of the "luck" people outside of the old money culture notice has to do with connections. But, it's not in some evil secret society way as it is portrayed in media for entertainment Old Money parents often descend from generations of "poor" generally seen as comparatively "unimpressive" legacies who as part of their unique family culture, the Old Money family is actually very proud of and dedicated to honoring their legacy. For example, farmers who owned and lovingly donated the land the school is built on or their ancestor even was a mason and helped build the school with their bare hands, etc. That inherited right to the institution determines if their child attends. The more romanticized version on TV and movies isn't very accurate. Sometimes a student included in old money circles is the child of generations of loyal gardeners for the family. Old Money culture isn't inherently more lucky or exclusive or corrupt than other cultures. It is very much about established good will. Honesty loyalty and hard work are put above self expression or melodrama. Emotions and mistakes are planned out to be prevented, not used as trauma bonds and excuses to waist hard earned savings /resources.

I once had a professor in Minnesota who married a wealthy woman from Connecticut. He said that on the East Coast they would often go to elaborate social gatherings because his wife was from an "old money" or established family. However, when he would brag to his college students that he married into wealth, many of the students would get angry or upset. I told him that in the Midwest many people roll up their sleeves to help others and don't like accusations of wealth rubbed in their faces. I then told him privately that he should keep it to himself and appreciate his wife with nuanced confidence. He then thanked me for the advice after class. I've been to at least one of his houses. He showed me his Bedlington Terrier that he and his wife entered in dog shows worldwide.

Agreed. I go to high society fancy pants social functions on the East Coast. When I fly to the Midwest for social functions, I pack blue Jens, black jeans, baggy shorts, gray or brown tee shirts, and absolutely none of my designer labels. I keep my mouth shut, or only speak of local sports or local weather. Midwesterners have their prejudices about the East Coast, and even if I tell true stories, they won't believe me and only stick to prejudicial notions proven by Hollywood movies and isolated one day visits.

There's a peculiar loneliness that comes with wealth, it's a burden and a barrier in many ways. It does make life easier in many respects but it 's very difficult to sift through people and there are many betrayals along the way. This is my understanding. Look at Truman Capote, women confided in him because they were basically lonely and he blew it up in his books. The dynamics involved are almost impossibly strong. He simply could not resist the temptations involved and then after his time in the sun, was cast out of high society.

The thoughts here are accurate… though I will say that the idea of “treat everyone as if they are valuable additions” extends beyond guests at a social event. My grandfather, who was the oldest of “old money” that exists in the United States always taught me to treat everyone as if they were special. The janitor and the secretary are as important to an organization as the CEO and, if you want to open a locked door or know who is working on what, those are the folks who have the power. His family lost much of their wealth in the depression, but when that man walked into a diner, the waitresses would fall over themselves to seat him and when he went to a gas station he would have several attendants washing the windows and checking the oil. He’s been gone 30 years now, but the lessons remain.

Etiquette, or good manners, are not just manipulative behaviors. They are fundamentally based on kindness. Introducing someone to another who might be a helpful contact is an act of thoughtfulness. In addition, by giving a little background in an introduction can help the new acquaintances have a handle to start a conversation.

25 years ago I supervised a woman who's family had more money than God, mostly in real estate. When she left work, she decided which house to go to and hung out on a yacht on the weekends. I was never invited to any of her parties (I had a funny idea that "work" was more than a place to socialize and I pissed her off with my expectations of her performance) but I'm told they were unbelievable. She came to work to have somewhere to go every day and be with people. She was nearly worthless as an employee, but she would come into my office when I was gone, pick up my son's picture and stare at it. She eventually married, but it was the most awkward relationship I've ever personally witnessed. She might have been the loneliest person I've ever known.

Very wealthy people tend to be transactional. The loneliest people I've ever met were in college, at University. They hung out together purely because they are from that status, and while they mixed with others they firmly would return to their own groups and never seriously broke out. It was a very self conscious world to occupy.

My next door neighbor and her family own one of the largest grocery chains in the country, but you'd never know it. They have a lovely home, but built in the 50s. She likes to talk about her childhood on a local farm. Her husband also never forgot where he came from. We had a tree down in a storm - he cut it up with us. When people visit me, they want to know who owns the luxury big box houses (mine being very average), which I find amusing, as these neighbors have an nth of my neighbor next door. At one time my hometown had the highest per capita number of millionaires in the country. Some were old money as could be in this area, and others nouveau riche. It was interesting to observe how people behaved with their wealth. In a hard working, primarily agricultural part of the state, a display of wealth was looked down upon. In business, as we were, decorum was the order of the day.

They lack substance and authenticity. I think that's a fair comment and it's one reason I've rejected those circles. It's sufforcating and they all mix in the same circles. Very narrow. They will however adopt you for a time like having a performing monkey. There are various types though and it's dangerous to oversimplify. But there is a certain heartlessness in them.

I’m not sure about some of these, they’re too much like name-dropping, which isn’t classy. For example, saying “our family’s villa on Lake Como”. It’s better to just say something like “when we were in Italy last month…”. Keep it vague and neutral, not show-offish. Let people ask for details, but you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to.
@oldmoneyluxury
@oldmoneyluxury 11 ай бұрын
“When we were in…” as a framing is suggested in this video. However simply saying “Italy” is unlikely from the upper classes. Italy is one of the most visited countries on the planet and many areas in it even the middle classes wouldn’t be caught dead in. More likely someone of means would specifically say the specific town on Lake Como (since there are many in that area) than simply “Italy”. In the same way someone wouldn’t say “Our house in Massachusetts…” they would say “Our cottage in Marblehead” (more obscure specific locale). It isn’t name dropping if it’s an obscure place. It’s the assumption that someone is “in the know”

@@oldmoneyluxury Correct. Also using the description 'classy' is NOT good English. Name-dropping is indeed gauche or awkward. Funnily enough you aren't allowed to say serviette it's napkin, however my grandmother who was French used serviette and my mother is French so I say serviette. And I say too bad! You can't slavishly adopt rules or you lose who you are. So I wouldn't be pretentious and try to sound you've been somewhere that you haven't. It's The Amazing Mr Ripley territory and it's not worth it. I get very irritated if I can't be myself.
