Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. And welcome to Season 3! We’re kicking off season 3 with all of the juicy secrets of the daddies of America… aka the Founding Fathers. Turns out these guys were more than just a group of white men in funny wigs. I’m talking dog obsessions, pretending to hate slavery, pasta makers, and more. Get ready to learn a LOT more than you expected to know about our Founding Fathers.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

Once, I taught a high school history class (as a sub; I'm usually a language arts teacher), and I totally blanked on the term "founding fathers," so I ended up calling them "daddies for liberty" in front of thirty twelfth graders. Never gonna live that one down.

What's crazy, and a bit unsettling, to me, is that some of the founding fathers were in their 30s during the whole revolution. Like... I'm in my 30s and the thought of someone my age, or the age of some of my peers, overthrowing a government and establishing a new government is really a scary feat. 30 really isn't that old, establishing a whole new country, at that age, is A LOT.....

I mean a LOT of history makes more sense when you know it was made by a bunch of teenagers to 20's to early 30 something men. Let's dress up & throw all the tea in the harbor just sounds like a HS senior prank.

America holds the president, 1 individual, as a hero or failure…kind of like the old myth of the king… We know that the leader is just the figure head. There’s a whole team around them AND that whole team stands on the shoulders of giants! The common philosophy of the day was reflected in the founding of America…except the whole “No person of this nation shall ever be owned by another” which wasn’t financially ‘practical’ at the time!

Back then I think 30 was more like 50. I mean people might not have lived very long back then, teens were taking over estates, and fighting wars. I think people grew up faster and we're more mature back then. Today's society is so cushy that adults get to act like children longer.

Thomas's wife Martha getting sick each time she got pregnant might be the fact that we didn't know about RH factors in blood. If a woman with a negative type (A-, B- O-) and the father has positive RH factor in their blood, it mingles with the blood of the baby and the Moms body sees it as danger and the body will try to fight it....I probably didn't explain it like a medical professional but I had to have a shot after the end of any pregnancy (full term, miscarriage, etc). My sister has the same blood type as me and she didn't get the shot and had problems with her pregnancies. Just a thought

Is necessary when the mother is rh- and the father is rh+ I've done a lot of research and it turns out most of the "blue bloods" aka the people of "royal bloodlines" in America have the blue. . . The Mohawk who accompanied him on the scouting party that killed the French diplomat spoke about how incompetent he was at strategy. His military "prowess" at planning during the Revolution was mostly due to his instincts as a farmer and understanding the landscape he was in including weather events and such. On the other hand, he was an inspired farmer and started all kinds of sustainable farming practices.

Another interesting factoid about Benjamin Franklin was that he was (allegedly) a member of the Hellfire Club started by a close friend of Benjamin's, the Duke of Wharton. They held different types of secret gatherings and "black masses." You should look more into this as there were a lot of sketchy things going on with it. Thanks as always for the awesome history lesson!!! I always thought the whole wooden teeth thing for George was a bit odd, but the fact his dentures had horse teeth incorporated was even odder to hear! LOL!!! :-D

When you Tour Thomas Jefferson’s home and property they say that he kept so many enslaved people to keep them safe. He kept families together and even paid many of them for their work. He was worried what might happen if they left Monticello. Supposedly he was trying to do what he could to protect the people left to him. Supposedly he even bought spouses of some of the people he inherited to reunite families. Now, I wasn’t there, I am just telling y’a what we were told.

I had a high school American history teacher who jumped on a table to imitate the famous picture of Washington crossing the Delaware, which got everyone's attention. He then informed us that that picture was a lie; and, due to weather conditions, Washington was more likely to be cowering at the bottom of the boat. Plus, it was very unlikely that he ever stood up in a boat like that. 😊

And, speaking of that great job on The Ripper as well. Well worth the wait for the second part. ❤ U & don't forget to have some fun this summer you little vampire you!

Hi Bailey! I hope you get to do the Dark History the dark history of the American states/colonies?. I know you already mentioned before bits of Hawaii (DOLE), Puerto Rico (birth control experimentation), I wonder if there are more to learn about it. Sending love and support

Bailey, you are so brilliantly funny, incandescently beautiful and most crucially, informative and educational ❤️❤️❤️ I’m from Bangladesh and even though it’s 1:17 am right now, listening to you never fails to relax me enough for to me to be able to fall asleep ❤️❤️❤️ grateful for the seemingly effortless way you entertain and inform at the same time 🥰🥰🥰

I forget the law involved, but Sally could not legally leave Virginia if she were freed. That's why she remained at Monticello. I think iirc her leaving Virginia as a free woman somehow invalidated her kids' freedom. There are no portraits of Sally, but it was said that she resembled her half-sister. Thomas saw his dead wife in Sally's face. That's likely where the attraction originated. It's historically inaccurate to state that Sally and Thomas were in a relationship. He always held the power, as well as having the right to never free her children. She was not his equal, so it was not a consensual relationship. One of the Hemings-Jefferson offspring, as an adult woman, disappeared and presumably changed her name. Historians don't know what happened to her. It can be assumed that there are descendants of this daughter walking around today who have no idea they descended from Hemings and Jefferson. I'm sure DNA websites will answer that mystery soon. We have Jefferson to thank for the separation of church and state. He was such a firm believer that, when he founded the University of Virginia, he refused to have a religious curriculum or a campus chapel.
