Superman's greatest weakness Kryptonite! However it's not just green k that Clark Kent must content with over in the DC universe. Back in the silver age of comics many other varietals were introduced. The first was Red Kryptonite (which was funnily enough the original colour of Kryptonite) an element that could seemingly do...anything. We take a look back at the first appearances of Red Kryptonite and including one that is often overlooked here on Casually Comics! The history of Kryptonite is a fascinating one, do you have a favorite Kryptonite?

Red kryptonte actually plays a pivotal role in the "Brave and the Bold" episode in which Batman fights Superman, as Lex used the kryptonite to turn Clark into an evil dictator and thus destroy his popularity. I LOVED the homages to the Silver Age's stories of Superman and the epic end of "The Dark Knight Returns" this underrated episode made

The Silver Age was especially funny cause if they needed the plot to develop or for someone to rescue Superman they'd be like "Oh no. A random piece of Krytonite fell out of the sky out of nowhere. Save me Jimmy!" There was an actual Jimmy Olsen where Superman gets angry at Jimmy and then something like that happens.

When that Martian appeared on Earth in 1958, he should have given a ride home to the Martian Manhunter, who was unwillingly stranded on Earth at the time (teleported here in 1955, his people finally came to bring J'Onn home in 1968.)

My favorite red kryptonite story was the one where Krypto turns into a female collie (who is also pregnant). Krypto gives birth to puppies. At the end of the story, when Krypto turns back to normal, the puppies vanish sadly. I always wondered what would happen if Superman got exposed to this type of Red K. Would he become a dog or would he just become a human woman of a different race maybe? I also like the story where Lex Luthor creates two serums: one which causes Red K to affect non-Kryptonians and one that makes the effects of Red K permanent. He has a chunk of Red K that will turn someone into the nearest other person (or, on a rat test subject, it turned the rat into a copy of the nearest rat). His plan is to turn Superman permanently into Lex Luthor who will go to jail forever, while Lex pretends to be his own "good" twin.

I love the concept of red kryptonite. I don’t really have a favorite red kryptonite *story* per se, but my favorite *use* was in Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The concept of various forms of kryptonite probably being used as a narcotic in some regions of space is really fascinating, and the idea that those narcotics would affect kryptonians more powerfully than regular people is something I would love to see be explored. Also, I once had an idea for a story that was basically Lazarus Planet, but various types of kryptonite that were vaporized in an explosion and entered the atmosphere, creating kryptonite rains.

Most adaptations in my lifetime had Red K make Superman angry or apathetic. But I like the “Lois and Clark…” episode where it’s used more like these tales. Evil *female* scientists (it was the 90s) make a laser that runs on Red K. They accidentally transfer Superman’s powers to Lois, who becomes Ultra Woman. It’s done during an era where, due to their romantic relationship, Lois is aware Clark is Superman, and they participate in a training montage together. Tres romantique!

My personal favorite Kryptonite story is the origin of Jewel Kryptonite from Action Comics #310. The story itself just has so much going for it: all the Phantom Zone Criminals teaming up, the return to Krypton, a review of the assorted types of Kryptonite, and the suspense of what Jewel Kryptonite actually does. Just an all around good Silver Age Superman story.

Ever since I saw Green Lantern create Green K with his ring, I always wondered if Sinestro could create Gold K and permanently depower Superman. Of course, obviously, he could never succeed at doing that because DC's not gonna suddenly retire Superman, but still... And that's the problem with Gold K. You can't really use it, at least not against Superman. The late post-Crisis version was interesting though. It only depowered Kryptonians for an hour, long enough to be a serious threat, but not enough to permanently end a character.

The idea that red kryptonite has unpredictable effects could be really cool if you play it right. Sticking with the “flying through a cosmic cloud turned a bunch of regular green kryptonite red” would justify why different samples did different things. I can see a villain or even the JLA collecting pieces of red K, exposing Superman to each piece and cataloguing its effects.

Three other facts to know about Red Kryptonite from someone who has read pretty much all of Silver Age Superboy, Jimmy, and Lois. 1) When first hit with Red K, Superman experiences a tingling effect, which is how they usually know when the radiations have touched them. Whether or not the effect then happens immediately or takes a bit to manifest could change from story to story, but usually it was soon after. 2) Every piece's effect was unique to that piece and the effect that piece has can only effect Superman ONCE. Afterwards, that piece would no longer work. This was often used as a plot point, such as creating mystery when a piece of Red K affected him anyway or I recall him even taking advantage of the fact it worked only once in some of his plans. (I think a few stories did ignore this rule tho, but it was generally held to) 3) Like Pre-Crisis Green Kryptonite, Red K didn't affect humans. There are exceptions, such as one issue of Lois Lane (forget which), shows Red K could affect humans if the radiations are filtered through a particular light spectrum or rays. This happens to Lois by accident and it causes her to undergo a sort of Jekyll and Hyde ordeal. I think Lucy gets affected by one too in an earlier Jimmy story. Some tidbits to know for that future Red K video. I can't wait to see it as a guy who has enjoyed all the Red K stories he's seen so far on his Silver Age binge.

Red kryptonite stories are fun, love wacky stuff like the one where Supergirl clears a red meteor and when it inflates her she covers it up by blowing into Dick Malvern (incredible name)'s eyes, which happily was just after he looked through the wrong end of his binoculars. Oh and there's some other weird stuff like her becoming a mermaid and growing two heads.

I do love Red Kryptonite - it's definitely my favorite K, because it's very rare for anything too terrible to happen with it, and often it's kind of fun. Even Superman lightens up sometimes - and I don't mean puts on a leather jacket and rides down Interstate 71 to Metropolis. I think strictly speaking, though, the *_ORIGINAL_* color of Kryptonite was *_BLUE_* - that was the color it had according to the narrator of the *_Adventures of Superman_* radio series, which I believe introduced Kryptonite, just as it introduced many other key elements of Superman's legend, including Jimmy Olsen, Superman flying instead of leaping and the "dashing into a nearby phone booth" trope. Blue is also the scientifically accurate color for a luminous radioactive element. Not that I'd want to limit Superman to the merely scientifically accurate, of course.

My favorite Red Kryptonite story was from the 'Superfriends' cartoon series. I don't remember the name of the episode, but in that particular episode, Red Kryptonite gave Superman multiple arms and legs. I also don't remember the entire episode; just that the Red K gave him multiple limbs and one scene towards the end. Superman was trying to open a safe to get something important out of it, but his extra arms kept getting in the way of him turning the tumbler, so Supes just punched open the safe.

Oh boy, a rodeo! My theory on all the kryptonites is, they distort yellow sun energy into a frequency that affects Kryptonians differently (usually harmfully). This would explain why, pre-Crisis, kryptonite couldn't harm unpowered Kryptonians, which would be the case if either there was no yellow sun radiation or they didn't have the ability to absorb it. This also explains Mon-el and his vulnerability to lead radiation: what if lead is reflecting and distorting yellow sun radiation, into a frequency that is harmful to Daxamites? This even explains why kryptonite and lead cancel each other out: they both distort the radiation into a frequency that doesn't hurt either Kryptonians or Daxamites.
@projekttaku1
@projekttaku1 8 ай бұрын
Its normally explained that the rocks just emit radiation that's toxic to kryptonians and interferes with their bodies ability to process sunlight. Mon-El's lead vulnerability is due to lead not existing on his home planet, so its extremely toxic to daxamites, especially since lead poisoning is a real thing, except you won't have someone falling to the ground in pain and feeling weak instantly after someone shoves it in their face.

Sometimes I feel like Superman could use Red Kryptonite to bluff. Like a villain thinks they have a fool-proof anti-superman plan, then Superman shows up with a lead case. There's an old episode of the Super-Friends where Superman is exposed to something(maybe Red Krytonite? I cannot remember) that makes him weak and ages him. He uses the Super-Mobile to fly through a bunch of meteors containing Blue Kryptonite, which rejuvenates him. I was a kid and it was the first time I heard mention of Blue K and it's relationship to Bizarro. It may also be the only use of the Super-Mobile on the Super-Friends, not sure on that one.

First, Sasha, I just wanted to be sure you knew about Perch giving you a callout in his latest video. I love the various versions of kryptonite, especially red k. I do wish a Swamp Thing writer would latch onto the idea of using white k (which is deadly to all plant life). Imagine the Parliament of Trees somehow learning of a giant white k meteor hurtling toward Earth. It would be the Apocalypse as far as they would be concerned. (Of course, if the meteor was large enough, all us oxygen-breathers wouldn't fare too well, either.) I do have a favorite red k tale from the late '60s, but I can't remember the details. It's probably from an issue of Action from '68 or '69.

Truthfully Red K only works in the Smallville continuity where it doesnt even turn him evil like it did in BTBAB but it makes him more susceptible to inhibition. Because it shows not a physical weakness but a mental one. Granted I also grew up on Smallvile so that version of Red K is what I know, but I also was ood enough to enjoy Brave and Bold for its campy style so seeing it as making Supes Evil also worked. Looking back now though, it does work better as the smallvile version

The other colors of Kryptonite was always such a weird addition to Smallville, wouldn't have been surprised if that show had invented them. But also not surprised that it's golden age old.

The best Kryptonite is Periwinkle Kryptonite. From Superman Family Adventures #9. According to Lois it made Superman temporarily fabulous!

FWIW, that is a Schott cafe racer jacket, Ms. CC. Just in case you are looking to add to your wardrobe.

Rather interesting that red kryptonite originally could split people in two. On Smallville black kryptonite was the kind that could split people and red kryptonite just took away Clark's inhibitions.

My favorite Red K story is the cover story of Superboy №101 where it transforms Krypto into a collie. A pregnant collie. And he gives birth to puppies that look like his usual form. It's wild.

I remember there was a Superfriends episode where red kryptonite turns Superman into Alfred Newman from Mad magazine ( seriously ).

My favorite Red K is still Smallville where it turns him into an Asshole with a cool jacket and Motorcycle, those episodes were always my favorite I like when it turns him bad or evil, of course nowadays there's so many Evil or Bad Superman but as a kid watching Smallville I loved it so much and all the other colors too

I think, if I were to write a Superman fanfic with red kryptonite in it, I would keep its randomness factor and I would explain it by saying that red kryptonite is red because it has kryptonian magic, which is a thing I know it exists thanks to DC Superhero Girls. And, since one of Superman's weaknesses is magic, he has no way to resist whatever effect it might have. I would try to not abuse this element tho.

Clark should leave the leather jackets to Connor, the one who wears them best and most iconically lol :)
