Usa, EU, China and others have already limited the use of antibiotics for the factory farms, so you're not right. The resistance may be spread more by metals through co-selection, but they are used in agricolture as well, for their antimicrobic activity. So no actual benefit in changing diet to avoid superbacteria emergency

i agree with the cow part, these animals really have fellings and we just brutally kill and torture them for our pleasure. For ex i had a cow that was in the family for 10 years but we had to sell because we desperately needed the money, the poor thing started crying while it was being loaded up in a truck. my mom also began crying because she was the one who took care of her for the most part and they created a bond in that time. (thankfully i live in a village so she just went to another household and not in some factory, i also saw her other children once, so she's probably still kicking to this day)

You do know in the real world that animal would have been ripped limb from limb and eaten alive instead of instantly killing it? I dont understand how this is a moral issue at all its either let them roam free and die a horrible cruel death or let them live comfy lives for a couple years with people that tend to thier needs and food then for thier sake kill them as fast and painless as possible so they dont even know they are going to die
@sssomeone8442
@sssomeone8442 3 жыл бұрын
@@wptd2689 it's not just about their deaths, they are forced to leave their children which is hard on both mother and child, and from what i know life there isn't ''comfy'' as you describe it. I do respect your opinion and i agree somewhat, but i'd much rather have them die of natural causes and not gutted or battered in the head, and cows also would protect each other if they are in herd, so being eaten alive is highly unlikely.
@TheRodNemisis
@TheRodNemisis 3 жыл бұрын
@@wptd2689 first of all really a tiny not representable percentage amount of animals can live the lives you picture on farms and even there it's far off a painless live, most of them are sent to a slaughterhouse with all the other animals, I've been at many vigils where you can see the trucks rolling in, with animals full of fear and sadness in their eyes. Second there are alternatives to farms that make money out of animals, they are called sanctuaries, so it's also not as binary as you picture it. True there won't have endless capacity, but if we stopp exploiting animals the breeding numbers will go down and so the total number of exploited animals. Third Humans don't have to eat animal products to stay healthy, there are so many other options, that are also way more environmentally friendly. In case you don't live in places where animal products are obligatory to stay alive and healthy I see no good reason to take everything away from a living being just so I can eat a bacon sandwicht.

@Kacper Tomasik It really isn't true though. It might be possible to convince some people to go vegan, but not everyone. Only 2.7% of the global population is vegan and I would seriously doubt even a slim majority would give up eating or otherwise utilizing any and all animal products. Humans have evolved as omnivores and we've been eating meat for millions of years. It's genetically hardwired. Meat substitutes aren't bad, but they can never seem to get it spot on in terms of imitating the taste and texture of the real deal. Plus there are nutrition concerns when it comes to a purely vegan diet. Any vegan should probably be taking supplemental vitamin B12, for example. I see all the ethical and human health issues surrounding the farming industry, but I personally can't give up eating meat. I'm too addicted to the taste of steak and chicken. However, as cultured meat starts to get closer to price parity with traditional meat, I'd gladly make the switch. In my humble opinion this, in concert with meat alternatives is the most promising route to reducing the suffering of livestock and poultry in the 21st century.
@ReasonMakes
@ReasonMakes 3 жыл бұрын
@@ElAteoMexicano "Plus there are nutrition concerns when it comes to a purely vegan diet." No there aren't. This is a myth. There is absolutely no nutrient that you cannot get from plants or microbes. B12 and Omega-3 you can get from algae. D3 you can get from the sun. etc, etc... Can also just take a vitamin if you're concerned. I mean think about it, where would those animals have gotten those nutrients in the first place? Worst-case scenario we can make these compounds synthetically, but fortunately they are also able to be sourced via plants or microbes. "but I personally can't give up eating meat". You CAN you just don't WANT to because you value PLEASURE over MORALITY. Source: I used to eat cheese every day before I was vegan. It was my favourite food. Once I realized what was happening and internalized it (a difficult thing to do on your own) I stopped immediately. That moment I completely stopped. I have never once eaten cheese since. You CAN. It's a question of whether you will choose to. You always have a choice to do the right thing. "Humans have evolved as omnivores and we've been eating meat for millions of years." Actually most prehistoric humans were vegetarian. Look it up. I think that most of the "hard-wiring" comes from growing up eating meat under the guidance of one's parents. Vegan parents usually have vegan kids. Source: my mom is vegetarian, both me and my brother grew up vegetarian. I independently became vegan when I was 25 (I am embarrassed that it didn't happen sooner).
@ReasonMakes
@ReasonMakes 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely true. Sadly, most people are too self-centred and self-deluded to do so. Their pleasure is more important to them than morality. They would rather torture others than eat something else. Lab-grown meat will help this a lot, and better meat alternatives like the beyond burger have been helping too. But eventually we will need to make laws around animal rights, just as we already do around the rights of dogs.

Another good point is that animals do not have our level of cognition. I mean that an animal in suffering only knows it is suffering whereas any human who is suffering has almost endless resources from within to cope with and even transcend the suffering. A person experiencing suffering can be stoic about it. A person can take comfort in reading, art, music, any activity including meditating and or praying thus distracting self even it only temporarily and sporadically whereas an animal can not.

People also forget the scramble to slaughter livestock w/ Mad Cow disease. The fear wasn't just that valuable food animals would be ruined, there was serious concern that Mad Cow would make the jump to humans. That's also why mink were slaughtered in the millions last year. We still have time to fix this planet as long as we all don't succumb to our own selfish desires and start prioritizing the reduction of suffering of all sentient animals. In order to make this planet conducive to happiness for everyone instead of happiness for just the top 1% we're going to have to start thinking about which actions we make that negatively affect others and then make the conscious decision to reduce and then eliminate those actions. And I still can't believe the complete lack of coverage this is getting in the news, so thank you! You're not only helping bring awareness of the suffering this causes the animals, but also helping people realize these farming practices are detrimental to almost all life on the entire planet. So even those people who don't care about the welfare of animals can hopefully see that they're potentially killing themselves and the people they love in the process due to the inhumane animal farming conditions.

We may or may not disagree on some subjects, but I think you are right on point about animal cruelty and factory farming. It is difficult for people to find alternatives, but not impossible, it's simply a matter of re-conditioning oneself to change our consumer habits...

I’ve been 80% vegan for decades, 90% vegan for 6 years, then a purist for a year. I used KAIZEN. My priority rationale was better health. I still remember the sick feeling I had as a child when I found out the raw “meat” in the refrigerator was a slaughtered farm animal. Bully speech.

Excellent video full of sound reasoning like always. Talking about pandemics without mentioning animal agriculture IS exactly the same as talking about lung cancer without bringing up cigarettes.

God Bless This Bold Young Speaker!! What a Talk - What an impact - Wow!! He had me feeling guilty of animal cruelty, and weeping, because what he said was FACTUAL, honest, simple and straight forward. There's no escaping it, if we eat meat, or drink cow's milk - we're contributing to alllll this - Never gave it a thought, I'm ashamed to say. How heartless of us not to stand up to such animal cruelty, let alone contribute to it!! That should qualify as ABnormal behavior - It shouldn't be normal to abuse, slaughter, & abolish if we are beings with a conscience. I'm truly shaken, and will have be looking upon vegetarians & vegans with a new respect, until I am able to be like them - A truly enlightened soul who cares enough to make the change - Alex O'Connor thank you - Ushta-te!!

Congratulations on doing a Ted Talk, Alex! Animal agriculture is at the intersection of so many issues for humans and animals alike, and it's important to spread the message.

I like this argument, it starts off by addressing people like me. Who for lack of a better way of phrasing it, don't really care about the lives of the animals we slaughter. Because whether you care or not, you probably do care about the pandemic, and the farms clearly as he states contribute to the creation and evolution of these viruses. And by starting the argument that way, then leading into the moral argument. You catch a wider audience. Really good ted talk, But its by Alex so i should've known it would be.
