Drybrush and shade: Let the model's details do the trick, you just highlight them. Although I get the feeling you could make a faux blanchitsu-style with copious amounts and multiple layers of Agrax Eartshade and maybe some reddish shade for weapons and highlights.

The ideas for the Iron Sovereigns is actually really cool. I would definitely watch a lore video for them. Very grimdark for sure.

I actually developed my lore for my Necrons whilst painting them. I also wanted them to look grimdark and used leadbelcher but didn't want them to be silver. BUT when I came to adding highlights for the edges I used Necron compound and it looks good but it's a huge contrast to the leadbelcher and nuln oil on the rest of the Necron. So I devised that these Necrons are from a Tomb World which is very murky and dusty with very strong winds, so strong that other races couldn't stand it, it would tear their skin off. I determined that these winds caused a huge dirt buildup, but the winds were also so strong that on the edges it cleans the dirt off, revealing the true living metal underneath. Of course Necron's don't see the need for cleaning, so they have this mottled dirty metallic appearance with small patches of the true colour of their living metal underneath.

You can complete the army in a few hours if you can stop time or travel back in time with your future painted army. You require two giant black holes next to each other spinning in opposite directions to warp space/time and then you can do this, apparently.

looks good but one painting tip for you. Don't use kitchen roll for dry brushing, its designed to suck up liquid and in the case of a brush this will be the paint medium and is one reason dry brushing can look chalky. But you don't need to get a proper dry pallette or anything, just get a piece of scrap wood or tile and undercoat it and use that to wipe off the paint for dry brushing

I love you paint scheme for your Chapter. I did the same black base, then a gold dry brush and a crimson over that. For the marines of the chapter, who hadn't yet been anionted, they were the standard gray with some minor highlights. These marines were true first born with the pointed front helmets. Great paint jobs. A tip for tiny black lines, think mechanical drawing ink pens. They come much smaller and the inks come in colors other than black. They work on plastic because their ink was made for mylar.

Great vid! I've honestly been getting a bit fed up with all the doom & gloom vids, so this was a very nice break from that. Love the custom chapter & the inclusion of some angry marines grafiti!

Nice job. Really like the style. Trick I've been using on figure bases, I find it a pain edging bases, so I now use a chisel edge perminant marker. Goes on flat black every time, quick, easy, and doesn't chip like paint tends to.

What a timely episode. I've been dreading painting my Spacemarines too. I finally settled on a custom color theme and the chapter. Glad to see I am not alone.

They look good! I also made my custom chapter a group of knights in silver. I was inspired by Thin Lizzy, so they have an Irish theme and I sculpted the Chapter Master's head to look like Phil Lynott. I think he'd like the idea of being a Space Marine.

I love the grafitti on there. It adds a lovely dose of 80's camp that somehow just fits perfectly for Space Marines (even though GW seems to want you to take them seriously these days). As a side tip for using Army Painter and Vallejo washes (which tend to be on the stronger side): I've found that Army Painter's Quickwash Medium let's you modulate the strength of the wash quite nicely, for when you want the paint job to look that wee bit less grimey.

“Dubstep Gregorian Chanting”.

For some of those grim darky details - for graffiti dab a brush over the paint pen while wet, or light dab the edges with drybrush of the base colour. this will male it look more like it was spray painted on. I did this same thing on my chaos legion ( although with more spikes and crucified eldar - in retro spec they look like a death metal album cover). (I'm a fan of neons for the graffiti) Since you already have astro granite - get some on the legs and feet, and the lower parts of vehicles. Give it an earth tone before doing the wash. Also a bit of white glue or modge podge, dirt and brown paint works great as an alternative. It makes them all look like they have been fighting in the mud and muck. Add some red and you have blood mud! (also an ecuse to be a bit sloppy when basing) And if your are going to have bloody chainswords, you got to have some bits of viscera. Some white glue and tiny bits of tissue or toilet paper stuck about then done in your choice of blood colour. little globs for flesh, or rolled for guts and such.

With this new edition I was going to finally start a SM army if not multiple, cause they did away with most sub factions, besides space wolves, black templar, blood angles, and dark angles. Also they added keywords for everything, so I was just going to make weird armies like all scout, infiltrators, deep striking units. I may make a black templar army first, cause they're limited on what they can take, and same goes for space wolves. SM is in that psychological state where you have far to many choices, and nothing feels good when you play your army, cause you could've taken other units instead.

Wow, you put way more effort into your paint job then I do... 😂 Looks great! A great way to apply the blood paint is using a straw and blow onto the brush towards the model.

Great to see some hobby content done from the (how do I put this) I guess ground level. We all have a pile of potential that we need to get through so showing what can be achieved with some simple techniques and a few colours is great. I mean come on have you seen the paint list on a gw tutoria. They're expecting newer painters to fork out probably the best part of 80 notes on paint.. I recently knocked out a squad of rank and flank chaos dwarfs in an HR or so. Just drybrush leaving the black in the recess and a few spot colours. They won't win any painting awards but there tabletop ready. I love your commentry on the industry Discourse but it's really nice to see you kicking back and enjoying the experience of tabletop gaming.

Mad coincidence I was painting my 1st slap chop marine when this comes up.

Clean the lids of your paint pots. If they don't close properly, you'll lose some of the most expensive paints to drying out.

This is ultimately what it comes down to, you never have to use an official paint scheme at all, all you need to do is figure out what army rules fit your flavor and go from there. My army is considered a Dark Angels successor chapter and uses Purple, Grif-Hound Orange and Iyanden Yellow for their color scheme. With a bit of green thrown in for their eyes and red for the guns and blades.
