The UK is to implement high-speed rail - on rails - doing 225mph. The cost are rising before the route is even fixed. It now makes more sense to scrap the idea and go for Maglev. Maglev makes sense in the UK's geography. It was also invented in the UK.

This is why I love youtube. What a great idea for a video, doods. And you did a great job of showing exactly what we want to see, which is the super fast fastness. Not like videos of the inside of the Orient Express where we just get to see Austrians drinking a lot.

I admire the Chinese for not worrying about cost for a project like this. Here is the US, it's all about profits so nothing ever get done. Progress comes first, then profits will slowly kick in.

Credit should go to the local Shanghai government for being the first the first practical passenger carrying application in the world. Maglev technology has been studied for over 50 years and now that we see it working, other countries are sure to follow.

Shanghai China is the only city in the world with a commercial maglev system. Germany and Japan only make prototypes, however the Shanghai Maglev is literally a clone of the German Transrapid 08.

There is a speed readout in each carriage of the train (in kph) so the would've been using that to tell the speed. I went on this train 6 years ago now and it was the most amazing piece of 'public transport' I have ever seen!

I was in Shanghai when they were planning this train, the government was clearing out many parts of the downtown area of all residents for development. Generations of residents were displaced with no say in the matter. On the other hand, the government had the line up and running within a year. In comparison, in the US it would probably take us a decade to build this in a major city.

High speed rail is the future of travel: clean, safe, and very fast. Their success in Europe and Asia is pushing the US to try for it, but the most difficult barrier is fighting off resistance from the airline and automobile industries.

I live in Munich City and they just decided to finally built the latest Transrapid Maglev between Munich Airport and Central Station. It costs around 2 billion Euros. Which is like 2.8 Billion dollars. A maglev connection between Munich and Berlin would cost around 100 Billion Dollars.

In a passenger jet, except when taking off, you don't have the sensation of movement except internally from inertia. But looking out that window is mind-bending! It reminds me of the special effects from that famous movie "The Time Machine" where George Pal did the special effects: it looks like the view Rod Taylor sees as it rockets through time. Ha ha!

I've ridden this train several times. It is one of the funnest, most interesting trains in the world to ride on. And, the best thing is that it actually goes to/from places you want to go. Shanghai Airport to the Exposition Center and Subway Station. Too bad you did not get any shots of the First Class cabin... it almost looks like Spaceship Seats. Video attached.. my video is still in economy, but at the end I have a shot of First Class through the window.

@hevblade I will said it still take less energy than conventional train. 1st, because the conversion coefficient for maglev design is so high that conventional transmission may never able to achieve. 2nd, I think ground effect had also been utilize, so further lower the power demand when the train is cruising. (At least in theory)

The U.S. military is one of the largest militaries in terms of number of personnel. As of 2013, the U.S. spends about $554.2 billion annually to fund its military forces. Put together, the U.S. constitutes roughly 43 percent of the world's military expenditures. The U.S. Armed Forces as a whole possess large quantities of advanced and powerful equipment, along with widespread placement of forces around the world, giving them significant capabilities in both defense and power projection.

Well each 'slab' on the trackside at this point appears to be approx. 22m long and it takes around 0.85 seconds to cover each slab so that's somewhere between approx 57-62 mph so the guy's actually quite spot on with his guess. I suppose it's just the usual trick of the camera making it look faster than it is.

A group of people tried to build one between DC Union Station and Baltimore (also stopping at BWI) around 2000, but politicians thought it would cost to much and be too noisy (despite the fact it floats on magnets)

This is what we need to build in America for travel between cities that are not more than a few hundred miles apart. This is the answer to (a) highway congestion (b) airport congestion (c) excessive fossil fuel use which leads to greenhouse gases, increasing global temperature.

I rode in the front of the monorail at Disneyworld a decade ago. It only went 45 miles an hour but it LOOKED a lot faster than Shanghai's. In fact, it LOOKED like it could go to the moon. But that's already been done. ALSO President Bush says it's Mars now. I don't know if Disneyworld's monorail LOOKS LIKE it can make it to Mars.

@DeadEND2012 USA have planes : where would you put those trains ? They need a dedicated track. The concept is interesting with "middle" distances such as 500 / 1000 km (considering that a train stops downtown as opposed to planes) , after that plane is faster. This leaves few options : Washington DC - NY - Boston ; San Francisco - L.A. ; maybe NYC - Cincinnati (Chicago is already too far) or Dallas - New Orleans or Galveston / S. Antonio / C. Christi. Or do I miss the point entirely ?
I rode the world's fastest train.
