Today we examine how the shape, size, and material of a sword grip influences how it can be used. We look at an original longsword from the Oakeshott Institute collection and four historically accurate reproductions to explore how grip size, taper, and riser location impact the function of the weapon.
Check out this link to explore the longswords we offer: www.arms-n-armor.com/collecti...
As always, our swords are entirely made by us at our shop in Minneapolis, MN out of 6150 carbon steel, hardened and tempered to 50-52 Rockwell. Our swords and other weapons are made to look, feel, and function just like the historical originals on which they are based.
Nathan Clough, Ph.D. is Vice President of Arms and Armor and a member of the governing board of The Oakeshott Institute. He is a historical martial artist and a former university professor of cultural geography. He has given presentations on historical arms at events including Longpoint and Combatcon, and presented scholarly papers at, among others, The International Congress on Medieval Studies.
Craig Johnson is the Production Manager of Arms and Armor and Secretary of The Oakeshott Institute. He has taught and published on the history of arms, armor and western martial arts for over 30 years. He has lectured at several schools and Universities, WMAW, HEMAC, 4W, and ICMS at Kalamazoo. His experiences include iron smelting, jousting, theatrical combat instruction and choreography, historical research, European martial arts and crafting weapons and armor since 1985

Beautiful and straightforward explanation. You gave us examples of form meets function with appropriate context for each example. Thank you.

Been using longswords for a pretty long time now and come to the conclusion that the part near the cross is less important than the pommel. Used to be very left hand dominant (left-handed) with the longsword, but once I became more technical and tried to develop fuhlen in binds, I noticed that it's the right hand at the pommel that's more at the mercy of the hilt's design. Took a hammer and chisel to more than one pommel so make it feel a little better, and despite not caring much for katana as a whole, I've come to prefer the Japanese sword hilt design for hand feel. Especially on a lot of feders I hate how thin the hilt becomes near the pommel.

The thin upper grip is usually to facilitate the winding of the sword i.e. as in Lichtenauer. But grip shape and form are a personal preference thing more than most sword elements.

Would you mind going over in detail how the grips are constructed? Seems some are stitched, then some just glued?? How did they shrink the leather while being glued?

I know I keep on pestering you guys with questions - I probably wont stop --- so anyway - For wire wrapped wooden grips did they just add oil over the wire and sort of rub it in until some of it got onto the wood? (for keeping to wood in useful condition and not drying out) - also polearms and other wooden hafted arms)

No worries, we are happy to respond to questions whenever we have the time. Things like beeswax and various oils were probably used to help condition, wood and leather, but I'm not really aware of any actual studies of medieval pieces that have done in that regard.

Thanks Nathan! I hadn’t heard the term “ Hawk bottle” shape before, that’s definitely my favored type. Where was this term sourced from?

You're welcome. It's actually hock bottle, which is a shape of actual glass bottles! Nifty, right?

I wonder why those bigger longswords lack prominent waisting, practically a straight bar to hold with, is that somehow better for mostly two handed use ?
@armsarmorinc.4153
@armsarmorinc.4153 Ай бұрын
I think its more whats popular than why the waisting seems to disappear over time. In most cases the hands are not traveling a great deal through the length of the grip.

@@armsarmorinc.4153 Was it becoming more popular just becouse of fashion or some actual positive traits, or both tho is the real question ;) some kind of retro vibe towards the war swords the 11 and 12'th centuries maybe ?
