This short video clip describes how I scratch built the fascia mounted switch machines from scrap plywood, stove bolts, regular switches, and Radio Control Servo push rod cable for the HO Scale turnouts on 'Glover Road.'

Ingenious! What did you call that bolt that the arm hinges on?
@boomerdiorama3 жыл бұрын
It`s called a "stove bolt." You can get them at any hardware store. These were a bit too long but that is O.K. Switch machines are pretty easy to make when you think about it. One hundred and one ways to make them. These have not failed as well. Very solid and reliable. Cheers.

@@boomerdiorama Thanks. I know what you're saying, it's just getting the basic idea in the first place and then varying it to whatever works for you. A hell of a lot cheaper and more satisfying than paying for one.

It certainly is. When I started this project I was finishing my degree and had no money . . . lol.

How many ways are there to throw a switch? How many of us can afford the majority of these systems ? Thanks for illustrating an affordable and simple option. My points are thrown from a control board directly off the dpdt switch thròugh fine teflon tubing with fine welding wire. The dpdt switch poweŕs the fog, asignal light on the switc stand and an indicator light on the pannel. I wanted it all but on a poor boy's budget. What a wonderful hobby to keep our minds occupied and active. I wish you and your followers success in their endeavors and most of all good health. Regards, AGH. (Elora White Lime Co.).

I prefer manual switches with power routing. Simple and reliable. ;-)

Great, even for O scale. I like this. Additionally, many yard switches like these are hand-thrown, so this is prototypical.

They actually turned out to be more reliable than I first thought. Small shelf layout equals lots of switching of turnouts. So far - so good. Cheers.

Love the video. I am working on a switch throwing system like yours but I have bought a box of skewer for cooking (box had 50 in it and the cost was under 20 dollars for the entire box on Amazon. Each skewer is 36 inches long so I can make several short push rods out of each skewer making the cost almost nothing. I like the power switch set up very much. I was thinking of going a different way, but yours is easier and I already have the DP - DT switches. I like the airplane cables and the cables that Fast Track sells, but lets be honest, I'm cheep..... By the way, I just bought an air brush and will practice on the paper like you demonstrated. It formally scared me but you have made it easier to start. Thanks...

You can get those same push rods at an RC Hobby Store. They are called Sullivan Cable. Actually any hobby store should be able to get them in for you.

I've always used dowel. Through fascia, through at least two small bits of wood hot glued to underside of layout. Piano wire down through turnout into a hole drilled through dowel. No wiring.One of my downfalls, surprised myself when I wired layout for DCC . :-D Most of my turnouts are Peco so have the spring ( snap) across action. Yours is nicer looking :-)
@boomerdiorama2 жыл бұрын
Yes! Wood dowel works equally well. Good point. Cheers.

I like the new Rapido Railcrew machines, they come with a switch stand which has a brass target.

@@boomerdiorama can you show how you build this turnout control on the Glover road expansion and perhaps model it attached to a switch stand on the top of the layout? this is such a cool detail and the ability to simply throw the switch and power the frog is huge!

@@schlthss33 I am quite a ways from switch controls, but when the time comes I can. In the meantime, these do the same thing: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z8dnnLhex568faM.html

Boomer, Can you provide any rough dimensions…height , width , length…I would like to duplicate your creation…also what thickness is your roadbed / bench work and what thickness would you feel is a max…1/2” ply plus 1” foam plus cork…any advice would be most helpful… Thank you so very much for your modeling inspiration and advice, Randy
@boomerdiorama Жыл бұрын
It's 8' x 16" @ 55" inches from floor. The track is layed on 1/4" Door skin - no foam or cork.

@@boomerdiorama Thank you for your reply…my question was for the dimensions of the switch machine you made and partly explained in your video…I’m sorry if my question was not specific to that…your track base looked like you used 3/4” ply with cork on top…I was just questioning the max thickness of sub roadbed that I could use for your switch machine would function that the fulcrum would operate…again thank you.
