On March 17, 2023, in the David Geffen Theater, the museum screened The Shining (1980), as part of the ongoing Spotlights series. Before the screening, Academy Award-winning director, animator, and editor Lee Unkrich discussed his new book Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining , the definitive compendium on the film that remains a haunting cinematic classic.
Written by J. W. Rinzler and published by Taschen in a limited collector’s edition of 1,000, the monumental book features hundreds of never-before-seen photographs, rare production ephemera from the Kubrick Archive, and extensive new interviews with the cast and crew. Unkrich provided a deep dive into the creation of his massive new book, including never-before-seen glimpses into the making of _The Shining_.
Academy Museum film programming is supported by the Richard Roth Foundation.

Thank you for this! I always suspected Kubrick thought it odd his initials and Kings were the same, as well as the Stanley Hotel!

Vivian Kubrick taped over 2-hours of behind the scenes coverage during filming that was edited down to 25-minutes by her father for the DVD Special Features. Does her entire VHS tape still exist?

At 21:02 he says there’s a tiny, frozen Jack. I don’t see it.

At 14:25 he misquotes the poem when he says "there is no *life*" but we can clearly see on the actual card projected it says "there is no *death*" ...im baffled at such an obvious mistake and my gut says he had to have done this on purpose. Its a 4 line poem, its vocabulary isnt complicated, and he clearly is an expert on all things related to it. Why did he do that?? i cant accept that "he just made a lil whoopsie daisy, sometimes ppl make mistakes, ur overthinking it." i find this "accidental" rewording of a mysterious little poem to be very sus. Possibly part of a cryptic message of sorts. This guy makes major films that definitely contain narrative codes already. Its entirely possible these narrative codes exist within talk events such as this like any other art or media...

@@CraigGood I was there that night too. It was mindblowing, and this entire video only captures about half the intensity of being there in person. Now I just need to sell an organ to be able to afford that amazing book.
