A man attempted suicide by overdosing on a drug he was given in a clinical trial. He was rushed to a hospital in bad shape…shaking, breathing rapidly with a dangerously low pulse, and blood pressure that had bottomed out. He was eventually stabilized, but not by anything the staff at the hospital did. The treatment and cure? He was informed that the overdose he had taken was a placebo. He had downed 29 capsules that were effectively sugar pills and the cause of his medical emergency… was all in his mind…Really, no really!
Jason and Peter were fascinated by the seemingly lethal effects of an inert substance. And while they had heard about the placebo effect, they were amazed that it could be this powerful. To find out more, they sought out the world’s foremost expert and researcher on the subject. Dr. Luana Colloca is a distinguished professor at the University of Maryland and the Director of the Placebo Beyond Opinions Center.
As an NIH-funded, internationally recognized expert, Dr. Colloca and her team research human pain modulation in patients suffering from chronic pain hoping to deepen understanding of placebo and nocebo effects.
IN THIS EPISODE:
Why the placebo effect is more powerful than you think.
The lesser-known nocebo effect and how it works.
How do placebos mimic active treatments?
Is it ethical to prescribe placebos without informing patients?
Why patients who KNEW they were getting placebos improved!
The placebo effect on positive vs negative-minded people.
Acupuncture, reiki, other alternative treatments - placebos?
Jason’s trick for alleviating pain using the power of his mind.
A placebo to replace erectile dysfunction medications?
Pondering non-medical uses for placebos - placebo vacations?
Google-:heim: Placebo “isn’t” but “is.” Here are other things we think “are” that “aren’t.”

I invented the placebo-stat! There was a control room that housed two different units each with its own cooling systems and controls. There were always disagreements about the proper setting for each sides thermostat. Because of my job as a technician, I was asked to provide a solution. I installed new thermostats on each side of the control room that went nowhere. The true thermostat was located in a place only I knew about. I loved watching the operators adjust their thermostats!

A new control group ought to be included: the patient gets no pill, no placebo, but instead gets a big hug, or a massage or something, because maybe the placebo effect has to do with human contact/connection in some way.

I read about a patient who asked the doctor for an extra strength placebo (knowing full well it was a placebo and what that meant)

I wonder how intelligence affects the results, something like why can some people quit smoking cold turkey and others can't stop, I always hear it's will power, which I associate to intelligence. Would someone with a higher IQ have lesser effects?

Placebo effect doesn't seem to work on me. I think it is because I'm not terribly susceptible to suggestion. For example, I have always called Sudafed PE "placebo effect" because it never helped my sinus congestion at all. Just recently it was revealed that the "active" ingredient in Sudafed PE just doesn't work. If Placebo effect worked on me I would have cleared my sinuses. Regular Sudafed has always worked for me so I think I respond to medication rather than suggestion. I'm not a hypochondriac either, I don't get ill from suggestion. I'm not fond of opioids either, they seem to have little effect on me. Vicodin might as well be a Placebo for me. I can't believe that people can maintain that Placebo effect after they are told that their medicine is a Placebo. I think that intelligence might be a factor and mine is just too high to be bamboozled by sugar pills.

she just had a bad microphone, and the guy they talk to at the end keeps his microphone like 2 feet away. 4k didn't even help them. lol. when jason's partner turns to talk to jason and speaks low it's hard to hear him, too. like he's got marbles in his mouth. the microphones should be in the middle pointing outwards so they could look at each other when they talk and they'll be talking into the microphone more. i'm an audio recording engineer, so i know a little about this. serenity now!

Sounds fine after two minuets...relax if your brain is that small that it cannot adjust perhaps you need a pill or a placebo.
