Alex Barnes-Ross worked with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's daughter Isabella Cruise in London, and gives us a pretty unique insight into Scientology's operations in the UK. After being expelled from the Church of Scientology, he tells his insane story about being locked in a room. We also look at the differences between scientology in the US versus UK, its tax status and L. Ron Hubbard's bizarre British history.

What I’ve never understood about Scientology is, if going clear means that you get control over your emotions and your “reactive mind,” why is Tom Cruise known for losing his cool at employees on his film sets? Sounds like he needs a refund on all of his auditing sessions!

I remember when I was in my early 20s I went with a friend up the road from where we worked, to pick up a friend of hers. I didnt know at the time, that he was a Scientologist and was working at the city offices(Auckland NZ) so we were in the vestibule of these offices for all of 10 minutes before we were being badgered to take a “personality test” I was just like “no thanks” and we collected the guy and left. HE then started to push going in for an “audit”. I was just like “dude, not interested” but I started talking to my friend after we dropped him off. She told me she’d taken a “personality test” and they’d told her that she was “unbalanced” and had the “potential to harm herself or others”. This girl was the kindest and gentlest person I’d ever met, and these people had made her worry about whether or not she really was unbalanced. I advised her to not listen to a word they said, and that she was as stable as anyone. It stuck with me tho cos it was just so very manipulative, telling people bad things just to scare them to come back for help…..assholes. I dislike Scientology intensely.

Bella Cruise is the adopted daughter of Nicole and Tom. Tom has only one biological child - Suri w/Katy Holmes. It was a huge deal when she had her b/c rumors swirled that Tom couldn't have biological kids (Mimi Rogers had none and Nicole adopted). And, from what I understand, Tom wasn't much of a dad to Bella either - allowing Scientology to basically raise her. I don't think she had much parenting from anyone.

Yes, and both Mimi and Nicole magically had biological kids after divorcing Cruise... not speculating too hard but I still think Katie either had extensive IVF or used a donor that looked like Tom in order to quiet those rumors that were going around. Also Tom only claims 3 kids - the two that he adopted with Nicole, and then Suri. (ETA: typo)

I'm Australian and I was curious why Scientology is legally treated as a religion. It all flowed from one legal case decided by three justices of the High Court, the highest court in the country. All three agreed it doesn't matter if the founder of the religion was a charlatan who considered it a mere money-making scam, they must decide the case on the basis of whether its adherents considered it their religion. Which they concluded was so. So it looks like we're stuck with them as a religion for a very long time because it's hard to imagine how their decision, for those reasons, ever gets overturned. 😞
@libertyjustice4847
@libertyjustice4847 Жыл бұрын
Yes because by that legal decision, they just legitimized cults. By definition the adherents to a cult believes that it's a religion. So the only thing to do is to revisit the legal premise and change the legal definition, which they absolutely should do because it's nonsensical to determine the intent and nature of an organization through the beliefs of its members who are clearly brainwashed.
@rossmurray6849
@rossmurray6849 Жыл бұрын
@@libertyjustice4847 If only it were that simple. The prohibition against anything that restricts the free exercise of any religion is in the Constitution. That's not going to change. And yes, they did legitimize cults, and they did so deliberately. Their decision states, "Charlatanism is a necessary price of religious freedom."
@libertyjustice4847
@libertyjustice4847 Жыл бұрын
@@rossmurray6849 I don't really know too much about the Australian legal system. Sounds like there's a similar constitution to ours here in the US? Because even though we have decisions here that may seem set in stone, The court is free to accept a case with a similar but slightly different issue and clarify or even change their position and therefore change law.
@masaokakihara9316
@masaokakihara9316 Жыл бұрын
I stand behind that court decision, as it seems just. All religions are religions. Either consider all of them not eligible for tax deduction, or none. There are a few ground pillars and if a group meets those, we gotta accept.

Great discussion. 💜 Something I think that doesn’t get mentioned enough when discussing L Ron Hubbard is that he was a *pulp fiction* writer & wrote in all sorts of genres under various pseudonyms. Romance, western, sci fi, he did it all & was paid a penny a word. His books were the inexpensive sort sold in checkout lines at drug stores & the like. 📖 He still holds the Guinness world record for most prolific writer. He had a special affinity for sci fi, as did most of his friends who were writers, and they’d meet often & spin tales with each other. I’m sure by his very plagiaristic nature he “borrowed” plenty of ideas from those around him. Wouldn’t it be fun to be a fly on the wall in those days? I think it trained him so he could come up with pretty fantastical stuff on a moment’s notice when he eventually turned his attention to Scientology.

I read a lot of his SF as a child so when I eventually heard about Dianetics I simply couldn't take it seriously. In the early seventies I came across other SF writers exploring the theme of messiahs and prophets. I think Robert Silverberg was one. They depicted cynical salespeople putting on a messianic facade and also truthful dupes being manipulated by politicians. I think I've been innoculated against cults from a young age.

Tom and Peneople were never married. He was married to Mimi Roger's until 1990, then married Nicole Kidman the same year, divorcing in 2001. He was in a pretty serious relationship with Penenople from 2001 to 2004. He then married Katie Holmes. The children that he and Nicole share are adopted. The children were raised in scientology while Nicole wasn't involved. After the split they were asked who they wanted to live with and they said their dad. Then of course Nicole is labeled an SP even though she wasn't all those years. Imagine the heartbreak of losing your children that way. Nicole stated she miscarried either twice or three times while married to Cruise. Funny how she managed to keep her children to full term with no trouble with Keith Urban.

Very thankful to you Andrew! You are educating us, your followers, about a very important matter, essential to everyone: religion.The dangers,or let’s call it, “dark side”, of some beliefs in the context of cults. To be truthful all cults make shiver.

I just LOVE how Andrew Gold interviews people. Letting the guest tell his story without interrupting much and doesn't make the conversation about him like some other podcasters (**cough** Joe Rogan **cough**)

Why did Alex Barnes GO BACK to Scientology after he left the first time? He joined staff TWICE. Couldn't have been that bad as he went back. He told everyone he was leaving as he got a job and needed the money so couldn't stay on staff. There was no big deal about it. Why is he making up drama that did not happen?

It’s so confusing that the brits call high school, college 😂 can you imagine meeting a young woman/ man/ boy/ girl and they say I’m in college so you thinking they at least 18 or up when they really 15-16 years old 😭

We Brits find it weird when a US adult says they are in school. Schools are for children! So we tend to assume you must be a teacher.

We owned a building in Sunderland that had Scientology as a tenant. After some time they stopped paying rent so we sent the bailiff to East Grinstead and got paid there. The empty offices had a bank of five showers….always wondered what that was about.

@Timothy Mc Yes, same as why the Beckhams distanced themselves from Cruise. He was coming on really strong and pushing to hard for them to join Scientology. Many others have said similar things. Kidman has previously alluded to it, albeit somewhat vaguely.

My sister and her first year uni chums did one of those diabetic personality tests in the mid 1980s. Her results were that she was too happy and they didn’t have anything to sell her. Imagine a cult who wants to recruit everyone rejected her!!!!!

Oh, I missed this premiere. Thanks Alex! His story of how he got in was interesting, for sure. I think it was his age and that maybe he needed to feel like he belonged to something- At that age, belonging is very important, no? Also, there is a powerful lure to the idea of belonging to something secret. It makes you feel special. Anyhow, I have a really hard time reconciling the fact that Scientology exists in England. And that the St. Hill is a Manor House😐 I don't even want to look at what it looks like... I want a Manor House(and a castle wouldn't be so bad, either😏)for me! It's no fair Hubbard got to have one! And for his nonsense group, too
