In this continuing series on shotguns, I explore the history of steel shot, and the appropriate shotguns and loads for waterfowl hunting. Learn why the waterfowl gunner truly needs a dedicated shotgun, and why modern shotguns, made for steel shot, are entirely different than their predecessors. Do not use steel shot until you watch this video!

12 years ago on my 50th birthday myself and a couple of guys went to Canada to hunt Geese and Ducks. While getting outfitted for this hunt I ran into a trap shooting buddy who hunted geese and advised shooting Remington Hevi-Shot 3" mag. #4 shot at 1 1/4 oz. and too use it for everything since it was 110% the weight of lead shot and would penetrate very deep. I took his advice and coupled this with a Benelli Super Black Eagle and had a great time shooting ducks and geese. After shooting my first goose I was in total amazement that a shotgun could kill something that big!! Had a great time and my friends advice on the Remington Hevi-Shot was great advice. Which you just covered in this great treatise on water fowling.

In the late 80's the Mallard duck population in my area in the pacific northwest the duck population seriously declined, but has since come back with vengeance, I just see them everywhere. Many hunters deny the lead shot problem, but there's no denying it. They even found lead in the swans in my area. A guy in my area died from lead poisoning from years of melting down commercial fishing weights and molding his own bullets.

I love your videos and the information you provide. Please keep up the classroom! I use the information you provide to make informed decisions. I plan on trying waterfowl hunting next season through a guide to see if its "for me". I have a 3" chambered shotgun. The guide said that is sufficient as they work to get the birds in close. I asked about a 3 1/2 in clambering and he repeated what you said. As a dedicated waterfowl gun the 3 1/2 is unbeatable... But alas my wife and wallet will limit me to one gun for now.

When I was in grade school (late '50s/early '60s) it was just an accepted fact that bald eagles were going to become extinct in the lower 48. Seeing an American eagle was a memorable experience. When I was in junior high and high school, Carson's "Silent Spring" became required reading. Fifty years later, I can show you a dozen or more nesting pairs this afternoon (mid to late winter nesting season). This should never have been a conservative/liberal fight; political agenda shouldn't be a consideration in conservation.

Thank you for a very informative serie of videos. I think it's a good thing that we use steelshots in wetlands. But in the 60 and 70 there were more crap out there than lead. Now we can see the return of hawks, eagels and other predator birds again here in Sweden due to less pesticides in the enviroment. And geese can be a big problem. Camouflage slippers, cool now you can sneak in and steal cookies from Mrs GunBlue without getting caught. Merry Christmas.

I totally agree Backspin. If you can find the testing reports from when they were testing the lead toxicity on the ducks, take the time to fully read them. They were literally force feeding those ducks with lead shot. I'm NOT saying that ingesting copious amounts of lead is a good thing. I'm saying that the tests were extremely skewed in favor of proving toxicity. Plenty of countries still use lead shot but have banned the extremely poisonous pesticides and the ducks are more than plentiful.

I was reccomended this channel as a whole IRL. Word of mouth marketing got me to his channel page. That says something about the old ways being the most reused because they’re the most reliable. I watched his whole pistol shooting series today and he goes back to a book from the 50s that had contributions from competive pistol champs then but really talks from his experience as an instructor. I know some stuff about shotguns but know I can watch any of 490’s videos for an in-depth info drop. I don’t have much pistol practice but I know from watching his series I’ll be able to practice much more effectively as a result of that series.

In my area and I think its in the whole country now days is how the farmers on how they are doing farming now days, is mostly on why we have very few pheasants. Now days the farmers they will start turning over the dirt in April and maybe even in late March depending the weather and they kill all of the nest. And also now days seeing more and more of these foxes and coyotes racoons etc.....which really never seen to much in the past and they are killing the eggs and adult pheasants. And seems like not to many people will shoot and kill these animals no more.

@@airbornesoldieramerica7125 the reason we have more foxes, coyotes, and raccoons is because there are very few trappers and hunters for these critters because pelts are so low. At least in Wisconsin by me that is the case.

@@derekchervenka605 ,It is very true that hunters and most other people and home or land owners does not shoot and kill off raccoons, skunks,foxes, possums etc... no more like they use to and hunters should do this much more often like they use to. Then 4 or 5 years ago I did a lot of research on this. Many University's and colleges through America, I think they finally broke the code mystery on why so many states lost large pheasant populations. According to what these colleges found in their science research, think they said its about 15% or 20% percent of the pheasants are only killed from other animals and predators like foxes etc.... Then its true on what else you also said, it was the chemicals they were spraying on the roads that killed so many pheasants back then.But I don't think that is the case now days. Then they found out before the 1970's the farmers would start to plow and plant their fields about mid to late May after all of the new pheasant eggs hatch. Since more and more time passed by, the farmers, many of them now days, with much better plows, tractors etc.... would plow and plant their fields even in April now days, and that kills many pheasants. Cause the hens will never or ever leave its nest if their own life even depends on it. Seems like this is so true in my state. Cause the DNR land were I go for pheasants this is what they do. They do have a big problem with the hawks in one DNR area's I go, cause again no one is allowed to legally shoot them. Other DNR spot I go for pheasants, they do this but that area I never seen any hawks, but I am sure there is other predators around. And every year I see pheasants there. Then they do not have the wet lands like they use to. From what I read the wet lands back from the 1880's to the 1930's is perfect amount of water source for them to survive etc....and that was the time the pheasant population exploded in America to the best. Then I noticed some of the farmers are also trying to bring back the pheasants. And seems like the non profit organization Pheasants Forever is also having some success in helping these farmers out on this.

At a Bass and Pro shop other day, and selling these real fur Alaskan Eskimo hats. So hoping it makes a come back.

Thank you! GunBlue490 many of your videos have been very informative. At the 31:30 mark in this one, you mention HeviShot is more effective than lead. If that's the case is there any need to use the larger 3 or 3.5" shells? I'm interested as I'd like to use my pump for ducks & geese and don't want to beat up my old shoulder any more than necessary. Also I'd be interested in a video comparing the non-toxic options out there. Particularly Vs steel, ie, does steel at high velocities (1500+) and larger payloads perform well enough or is the large expense of the other non-toxic options justified in terms of performance? Thank you and keep up the great work.

Blue, may I ask you sir where does B.B. begin and shot stop. IE is 6 shot a B.B. or pellet also is this effected by steel vs lead. @GunBlue490
@GunBlue490 6 жыл бұрын
ritesideofthefence 58 As I mentioned in the video, steel shot is actually a soft iron alloy. Steel Daisy BBs used in BB guns and air rifles are very hard steel, and are never loaded into shotgun ammunition by any manufacturer, which would certainly destroy any shotgun. Unless you asked if you could handload BBs, Remington is more likely referring to the use of a SIZE of shotgun shot, known as BB, which is the next size larger than #2, and smaller than #4 Buck shot. But the term BB, as used in shotgun shells, has nothing to do with the .177" diameter copper or tin plated BBs used by kids in the back yard. Shotgun pellet sizes start at the smallest size known as "dust", then commonly go to #9, 8 (skeet), 7-1/2 (trap), 6, 5, 4, 2, BB, #4 through OO Buck. There are some in between sizes that are rarely seen. You can look up images of shot sizes. Just don't use large steel shot in your gun, as they recommended.

I have been duck hunting since I was a boy in the 70's then till ' 91 shot lead. After the '91 steel shot mandatoriam for waterfowl a few of my shotguns I inherited are retired for upland hunting. I have a 1950's Browning A5 and a nice Stevens 311A SXS made in '58 that was my fathers in 16 ga that are not according to a gunsmith able to fire steel shot. Yes, Bismuth is a option but it is very expensive at $2.00 a shot , or $20 to $30 for 10 rounds not very economical in my opinion. Just recently I did as a gift get 50 rounds of Bismuth 16 ga shells for the double and used it last year for ducks, first time in 30 years that gun was fired at a duck. Sad really those guns are not able to be used for waterfowl.

Concerning barrel scoring and wear; why is shot material an issue when it is encased in a plastic sleeve as it travels down the barrel? Doesn't the plastic insulate and protect the barrel from whatever material is inside the wad, be it steel, bismuth, or lead?
@GunBlue490
@GunBlue490 6 жыл бұрын
Robert Tisch The collar mitigates wear to a degree, but shot does not stay completely contained as it travels forward, as the pellets separate from each othe, just as a rack of billiard balls separate on impact by the cue ball. The collar you refer to is ALMOST sufficient to prevent damage to modern barrels, but it is know that even they suffer damage by steel pellets over time. This is not an arguable matter, nor mere conjecture, and the entire industry stands on the matter, as well as the innumerable ruined barrels. Older barrels were not designed to withstand steel pellets, and they simply do not. They were made with different wall thickness, alloyed differently, and choked by far different taper dimensions and strength. They were great firearms, and still are, but were made before the steel shot era, with different technology intended for lead pellets.

usn038 I have no personal shooting experience with that particular model, but I can answer objectively on the basis of features that I am very familiar with. The three position safety is virtually identical to the Winchester Model 70 safety, which I prefer over all systems. The three lug low throw bolt handle is good and effective, and very similar to the Ruger American, though the scope clearance issue is not a problem with conventional 2 lug bolts, and never has been. The flush rotary magazine is another Ruger American clone, though perhaps T/C hopefully executed it better with a box that doesn't so easily drop out with an accidental touch of the release lever. The threaded muzzle... I personally see no use for attachments on a bolt action rifle. No suppressor can silence a .308, and muzzle brakes are unecessary on that round, are deafening, and typically hurt accuracy. The gun is otherwise appealing. T/C was originally down the street from me and was well regarded for fine, accurate guns, which has since been acquired by Smith & Wesson, and relocated to Massachusetts, who seems to maintain their quality standards. I am sure that they are striving and succeeding to keep up with MOA standards found across the market with this familiar, practical, economy priced rifle. I like what I see. The next question to address is the selection of the .308 cartridge. If there is a particular reason to go with that chambering, go for it, but in most cases, there are better chamberings that have better bullet performance at virtually all ranges, with less recoil. It's primary claim to fame is as a military 30 caliber, and that you can get lower power service ammo to practice with. It's a very, very, very, good, effective round, but there are better ones for most purposes, distances, and most game unless you are in need of it. The same .308 case powers the popular and very effective 7mm-08, which has far better down range performance with less bullet weight and recoil. Its also the case that powers the 260 Remington and 243 Winchester, which are also wonderful rounds.

I know I can order off line but if just want to pick up a box those are my choices Thank you for the info on the gun. For under $200 i'm going to get it tomorrow I'm sure it will shoot more accurate than I can . I just didn't want to get a piece of junk. My wife and I take the kids plinking at least twice a month, I go on an annual duck hunt with my grandfather every year but I have never been deer hunting, I own some guns but i don't know anything about bolt guns. Lead shot is illegal for shooting ducks/shooting over water ways in New Zealand. However you can still use it on land for rabbits etc. For the exact reasons you have listed. Lead poisoning in the water ways and wild life eating the pallets. However I find the steel shot doesn't hit as hard. Meaning more wounded birds sadly. I have also heard our government is looking at banned lead projects for all rifles. As our native birds have been found to eat the lead projectiles from dead game. This is mainly from the government backed chopper hunting in our alpine areas on national parks. To control our introduced tahr population. They just fly in. Shoot em up. Then leave them on the side of the hill.

You changed my stubborn mind about lead and water ways. I just never bought into the idea that that little bit of lead was that deadly to our environment... I just thought it to be another way to kill the 2nd amendment.

dowdawg As I stated, the issue was used to support an anti-hunting agenda, and certain other matters contributed, but lead was actually killing duck populations in significant numbers that are historically evident now from their renewal, which any honest person my age can see with their own eyes. Those who refute it probably never went to a salt marsh or inland waterway in their life. In any case, the clock turned 40 years ago, and any attempts to bring back lead shot would be pretty silly at this point, and not even supported by most duck hunters, the gun industry, or Ducks Unlimited. It's over and we have moved on. In actuality, the US Fish and Wildlife Service never suggested the termination of waterfowl hunting, but simply the termination of toxic lead, and lead is very toxic, as this survivor will attest.

Yes and you are correct I never went into any salt marsh or inland waterway. I have always been in the woods just hiking and shooting on my place. So ignorance on my part is admitted... Thank you for the info, its different coming from someone who knows from experience!!! Was your exposure due to casting bullets or cartridge reloading??
