Nick Horten joins us to answer the question - what happens when you shoot steel shot without a shot cup?
Nick brings in some specially loaded ammunition fitted with a regular fibre wad from a lead cartridge and we test them to see what effect unprotected steel shot has on your barrels - will the gun survive!.
Please do not try this at home!
Enjoy.

For those who want to shoot steel without leaving non biodegradable plastic everywhere, I've had good luck using a layer of cotton fabric and brown packaging paper around my shot as a homemade wad cup. I use this principally in a 20 gauge muzzleloader, and it has yielded some great patterns.

The ball is in the court of cartridge manufacturers now, whilst i welcome the change to non toxic shot and biodegradable wads, currently the selection available is small, i think Eley is doing the best on the market at the moment and i believe their eco-wad is a great idea that can only be improved upon. I do however feel for owners of tight fixed choke or older guns that aren't compatible with steel. I will continue shooting fibre wad lead for the time being until the cartridge technology and production of eco friendly steel improves and the prices come down. I'm sure in a year or two there will be plenty of good non toxic/plastic game loads from different companies and we can all move on no issue. Many thanks TGS for the great vids.

@@Phoenix_Atlas Same here, My Winchester Supreme O/U has digested many hundreds 3" magnum steel loads without any damage to either barrels or chokes. Full chokes with steel shot should be avoided and steel usually patterns 1 choke size tighter with steel over lead. I typically run Mod/IC in my particular gun. A thin walled barrel would be the true test with the un protected steel, the 1300 Winchester has a barrel profile that is nearly as thick as a rifle.

Forty plus years ago I read in Guns&Ammo magazine about a guy who fired actual steel bb's from his fully choked shotgun. He managed to score the barrels with the bb's producing straight "rifling" . This feature stopped the wad turnig as it does on all shotguns. The result was "super choke" he was annoyed at the scores but re-patterned his shotgun using normal lead duck loads. He got anything from 75 % to 90% patterns at forty yards. The gun had superchoke and he was super pleased. The ducks were not!

Actually, that's been known for about a century with some continental makers deliberately honing their barrels lengthwise for tighter patterns.

I would have to say that the amount of damage one may have to their shotgun barrel is really dependent on the manufacturer and the type/kind of metal they make their gun barrels out of. For I have scrapes in my barrel from shooting metal shot. And the powder charge also plays a factor as well.

As long as the steel you shoot is softer than the barrel material it should be good. I would not try it with a damascus steel barrel. It probably the best to stick with cups, but patternwise uncupped might produce better patterns. Greetings, Jeff

Been shooting clays with a 35 year Old Beretta until i bought my Caesar. We are only allowed to shoot steel in Denmark, never once has this been a problem. Neither to me or my friends. These days the Beretta is used for rough shooting with my spaniels, but could easily shoot clays another 10 years. I have an Old caliber 16 Heym bf22, an Old s/s sideplated in caliber12 and a Miroku 7000 caliber 12 aswell and they all kill with steel. No need for lead. As hunters we have to think about how we treat the nature. My friend is a gunsmith and he says it is the lack of maintainance and cleaning that ruin guns. Keep up the good work 🙏.

Steel is inevitable, ducks here in Australia it’s mandatory, shotgun ranges are somewhat expected to clean up theirs lead shot periodically or go steel, it’s not quite law yet but the EPA has sent out documentation of notice in that direction. Have tried fibre wads, dismal failure the first and subsequently last time I used them, the beretta didn’t seal properly and I gave up after 5 cartridges..... gave the other 5 boxes away. plant resin cups are now starting to become available, personally I’d rather shoot those than have the shot running down the barrels, a couple dozen shots might be fine, but let’s see 1000s later. Appreciate the work done though 👍

Sacs response . SACS CLARIFICATION STATEMENT ON LEAD SHOT Following the joint announcement today by the UK’s leading shotgun cartridge manufacturers, SACS wishes to provide further clarification on its participation with the joint statement released by the nine shooting organisations in relation to the proposed five-year transition away from lead shot for live quarry shooting. It is SACS’ understanding that the trade and cartridge manufacturers were consulted about the proposed transition and that the Gun Trade Association itself had engaged with its relevant trade members. Furthermore, the GTA provided the organisations with a guidance document, which we shared with our members and community at the time of the announcement on Monday. SACS signed the joint statement on this basis. The issue over lead shot cannot be ignored; it is a genuine threat and SACS wishes to work collaboratively with other shooting organisations AND cartridge manufacturers to find a suitable solution and way forward for all. SACS is a grassroots shooting and country sports representative body that exists to support its members and stands for integrity and truth. The hard work and commitment from the SACS team is self-evident, from individual member help to national scale advocacy. We work proactively with our members’ best interests in mind, addressing difficult - and sometimes controversial - issues. It is our duty to make our members aware of these challenges and to find practical and timely solutions, in partnership with other bodies where appropriate. Our committee position is clear: lead shot faces serious challenges, which we have all known about since at least 2010. There is acceptance from all organisations that alternatives to lead exist and can be further developed, though clearly that must be in a realistic timeframe. No-one is better-placed to judge that timeframe than the cartridge manufacturers themselves. SACS members with any questions on this matter are welcome to call 01350 724228 or email info@sacs.org.uk or send a message to the Facebook page.

Smiling! At the time ammo is very hard to find here in the states. Been reloading for years and can't find any reloading supply's. No primers for rifle, pistol, or shotgun, on the list at several stores and by the time the email comes there out again. If you can find anything the price is 3 times normal. I have been looking for buckshot and it's very high price so been thinking of loading bb's and .25/6.35mm ball bearings. Cant find much load data or what it might do to your 12 gauge barrel. I have reloaded copper plated steel bb's and see no damage. Guess I will have to experiment a little. I believe the wad will protect the barrel if long enough cup.

Just to ask a question, in the past when cartridge manufacturers were developing steel shot cartridges did they not do the test you did to help them to decide whether or not steel shot needed a shot cup to protect the barrel walls from the steel shot? Gentlemen, I live in California where ALL game has to be shot with non-lead cartridges. The common advice here is not to shoot steel in any barrel that has a tighter than modified (half) choke. The risk, we are told, is bulging at the end of the barrels. There are “steel proof” removable chokes. These do not help shooters with older guns or fixed choke barrels. Since steel shot was made mandatory in the 1990's in the USA I can't use these fine shotguns since the steel shot will destroy the barrels. Sure I could have a gunsmith reem out the chokes but it will destroy the guns value. Bismuth shot is very costly here around $2.00 US per shot, not very economical .

Technically you not shoot Steel you shoot Iron through a Steel barrel. So the barrel is still way harder and stronger then the pellets. And that is especially the case today, not to that extent in the 80ties. The pellets have become in the 90ties way softer. And on the other side the barrels way stronger (many barrels are forged today) In general all guns from 95 and later are ok for steel, US guns already from the late 70ties. I am only careful with choosing tungsten alloy load, some are good, some give you marks in to the chock, that was some first series tungsten loads by Remington, where they insert way too short wad. But I would not put steel loads through very old 60+ years old guns. Even the double rifle barrels was way softer first half 20century. For that guns go for Bismuth or Tin and not Iron or Tungsten. And what wears the gun down fastest, is not the Iron pellets, these load operate always very close the the max pressure (early load way over caused by cup measuring method ). Such already heavy used guns does not like it to be punched to the limit. Keep there the soft under pressured lead loads. The side by side tend to age faster with Iron loads, especially when you want about same performance. Demibloc barrel take the abuse better (forged blank must be used to start from), in the end it comes down to the N/mm2 of the barrel and its locking. Therefore on the high end guns, you will not get problems even if they are older, but for the cheap ones it will be the end.

I've honestly never been particularly concerned with the effect of steel shot on a gun barrel. But when hunting game like turkeys or rabbits where you are generally shooting at the ground and occasionally rock outcroppings I've always worried about the potential for ricochet. Apparently in the realm of combat shotguns the concept of steel buckshot was abandoned for this reason. Interestingly enough when shooting steel flechette out of shotguns this is not an issue since it isn't saphirical In-Shape.

Great video John + Nick. Why do we remain in this tiny bubble of believing we have a God Given right to shoot whatever we like in this country - I wish we did BUT we don’t. Outside of our own little bubble we don’t have a friend in the world and if we don’t get ahead of the curve on this we’re letting our enemies make the rules and that could be a disaster. Don’t think so? Look what happened with the General Licence this time last year. Thanks John + Nick.

Isn’t the danger of damage from the fact that steel isn’t as malleable as lead? For an explanation that makes sense to me, your basically firing a cup full of tiny balls out of a pipe, under acceleration the balls are forced back into the cup almost sort of compressing them, at the end of that pipe the diameter of it shrinks down (choke), so that cup of compressed balls is getting forced into that choke, in my thoughts the lead will give and squash up a little if it needs to much easier than the steel would, I am by no means an expert, but could that possibly lead to pressure issues? (Almost plugging the barrel with a cup of steel balls) is that the reason they warn against using steel shot in a non proofed barrel? I know you looked down the barrel for damage but I don’t think the steel comes into much contact with the barrel, if at all, did you notice any heavier marks in the tighter end of the choke compared to when you would be firing lead cartridges? I’d also say tungsten and other harder than lead or even steel alloys would be even worse if this is the case

Hi Andrew, reading your question I wonder if you`ve slightly missed the thrust of what we were doing. The cartridges we used had no protecting wad whatsoever. The steel shot was in contact with the bore from first to last. It was no4 shot which is small enough to move about through any choke constriction. The problems with "bridging" may occur with much larger shot which is why the regulations mention a change in status when using shot sizes larger than no3 in standard steel or 4mm, roughly 1 to bb, in High Performance. Have a read of this basc.org.uk/download/63109/?fbclid=IwAR1WJlvQMHB0oqQg8zBkimfGITnJZI5Q1DEbKD_6mEQfvFHA8OmqtEwO4Vc regards, Nick.

In the Netherlands we have to shoot steel, lead is not allowed. It's forbidden since 1998, as lang as you shoot a gun that is steelproof it doesn't matter. Even guns that are not steel proof, you can buy low pressure steel cartridges and it will do just fine. I inherited a old browning auto 5 that is built in 1964 with a fitted full choke, i shoot low pressure steel with it and it stil shoots fine! You van also buy bismuth but that is a lot more expensive! Steel shot comes in a plastic wad, so it doesn't damage youre barrels.

There is a particular film where he buys an extra full choke and is pattern testing 3 inch number 2 steel shot no problem at all ????? The film if you would like to watch it is : - I've bought a new extra full choke.. effective at 70 yards!!? Posted 1 month ago I just don't understand all the hysteria

Steel on steel equals wear. How many circa 1900's English guns would still be in prime condition today had steel been used? If I used a premium gun it would be bismuth every time. Game shooting costs are £38 per bird & bismuth £275.00 per 250 cartridges. However, for clays cost dictate steel but how many grounds ban steel on the basis of ricochet, indeed the CPSA/Insurers are clear on this issue.

Guys, change is inevitable to engage in a responsible attitude towards the planet and our children! And we should undertake it proactively and not wait for regulations to be imposed on (lead) shooting. That’s the way to protect the future of shooting, not resisting change and ending up being “banned altogether”. Last, don’t forget: this is also a political issue! PS: I’ve been shooting steel through by guns in Belgium for the last 10 years and no problem whatsoever, respecting the usual recommendations concerning avoiding tight chokes and big size shoot.

Tor Crawley yes fine but modern guns are back bored and there there is a issue with fibre sealing as they go up the barrel , so you are saying we should sell all new guns and go back to muzzle loaders. @@roeng1368 well, my mom has smoked cigarettes for 45 years, and she has, like you, not grown an extra head, so I guess smoking isn't bad for your health. I agree that steel isn't as effective as lead, but long therm exposure to lead, is worse than reduced range in hunting. In a study about reproduction, several females has been tested for lead content in blood tests, and a big part of them had lead in them. (This was not due to lead pellets, but from fish they ate). This just show leads ability to stay in the food chain and end at the top. Banning lead (and plastics) from shotshells is just a very small step in the right direction.
