Recorded a few weeks ago, long before current advice on Leaving ones home - Nick Horten cake over to do an update on his Spanish Side by Side that he has been using steel through for a few years now.
As we were fairly confident that nothing would have changed, we decided to go out with an old English Side by Side and shoot some stew through it’s 3/4 choked barrel to see what happened.

As a Belgian Hunting course instructor ( here we’re restricted to steel shot only in Flanders) , I always ask my students, ‘what do you think manufacturers changed when steel shot became mandatory? ‘ All kinds of theories between barrel thickness and steel hardness spring up : my happy reply remains the same : the stamp

Leadshot was banned in 1992 here in the Netherlands. My dad bought a Winchester 101 in 1985 with 1/2 and 1/1 fixed chokes. The thing has shot thousands of steel shot cartridges ranging from #3 to #7, 24 gram to 36 gram loads. It has been my main gun since 2010, nothing wrong with it. Not a scratch in the bore. The discussion going on in the UK now, is exactly the same as 28 years ago in the Netherlands. Wounding and missing is down to shooting distance and marksmanship, not the material used to make the pellets. Steel shot is as lethal as anything, just ask the thousands of head of game shot in the Netherlands each year.

I used to shoot geese with lead not long ago, all things being the same now i simply can't drop them in one shot any more. Ducks sure but the bigger the animal the worse steel does, i certainly wouldn't shoot mammals with steel

Hay fellows, Iraq veteran 8888 put all kinds of cartridges through a old 410 single shot shotgun to try and blow it up. I was quite impressed with the 45-70 load and the gun with stood it. I also know of folks that have shot all kinds of things out of black powder muzzle loaders like nails pebbles. I am mentioning this not to take away your experiment but, just thought you may like there videos. Guns are very tough except when you over charge or an obstruction in barrel. Again you already know that.

Thanks Jonny for another great vlog I think you're right what you say theres so much misinformation going round.. Me and a few mates have been trying out some steel cartridges for clay shooting ( up until last week anyway ) and to be honest I can't see any difference to my scores with lead we've been using up to 3/4 chokes and the pattern has been pretty good even on some hard to hit loopers out at 50+yards no worries to the only thing I did notice was the cost is bought gamebore over run white gold at £ 30.00 a slab. .. Now I'm never going to be a world class shoot or win any big competition but I'm regular shot with a 70% average and so will I carry on using steel. .....Heck yeah...

Questions about 2 3/4" (70mm) shells in 2.5" of 2 5/8" chambers occasionally crop up. The fact is that shooting the longer shells in the shorter chambers adds something like 800-1000 psi measured at mid-distal chamber. This is certainly not a safety consideration in guns that are otherwise safe to shoot. Walter King, famous barrel maker for Parker Brothers, specifically stated that their standard 2 5/8" chambers (and forcing cones) were entirely suitable for the longer shells.

Let’s be honest.... if you spent in the region of a £70-£100k on a fire arm... you would 100% expect it to beable to take steel shot.... stick a manpon in it & let’s enjoy the fact that quite simply... steel shot IS SAFE TO USE! another great video Johnny!

I have exactly the same gun, the same year and everything. Here in Denmark we have only been able to use steel in our shotguns since 1996. My now 30 year old Beretta has eaten ALL types of steel cartridges without any problems. It has to be said that I have never used steelshots larger than 4. Using steel for hunting works absolutely without problems here in Denmark.

It doesn't strictly say it on the box, look at Gamebore 32gram 3's(steel 70mm/2 3/4"). The outer of the box suggests 3 1/4 ton per sq inch.....then inside a small piece of paper suggests its HP so needs a fleur de lis.....if this paper is lost/falls out/miss placed.....Gamebore need to address this OR as you've suggested a move to mm standardisation would be sensible!

Just a question about downsizing load sizes, if someone was using a semi auto with 32g lead cartridges because the semi auto wouldn’t cycle 28gs and below would you still suggest downsizing to 28g steel cartridges from 32g lead cartridges and would the gun cycle the steel cartridges.
@tgsoutdoors

If it doesn’t cycle, get it tuned for lighter cartridges perhaps? Or just shoot the 32’s to be sure

dad has a damascus barrel sxs hammer 12g not a 2 3/4 chamber its shorter which we did not know, but nitro proofed i beleie the gunsmith informed me, before dad dies i got all his guns transfered to me, other wise we have a nightmare after he dies of lawyers ect to transfer, so better to pay $120 odd now than hire a lawyer. and we shot 2 3/4 of all loads in it for 30 odd years, 36 grams and anything thats we could purchase, it never blew up, choke is very very tight, 20 yards i can put a strip across a wounded ducks head and not touch the body. years ago dad shot a wood duck, its the same size as a black duck, australia we are, at 40 yards we counted 43 pellets in the duck,and yes i kept a photo of that as a record, lead shot as lead is permitted with that gun still at that point for safety reasons. we like our guns with very very tight paterns, just how we learnt, id rather hit it or completely miss a duck that way less wounding. just my preferance. steel shot i cannot fault in anyway to lead, distance or killing power now that i have a cheap gun with removable chokes. 70 yards ducks fold dead just like lead, but i shoot very very tight patterns, not everyone can, i just hate the cost, we pay double other countries do, even the cheapest 22 winchester ammo made here in victoria we pay about $10 for pack of 50. yet an import we can buy for $5-6 a pack. eley i learnt with but its like buying gold here. old eley grand prix paper shells, and common was blue stars, good shells.

Steel shot is stamped out of billets of soft Iron, I have seen the machinery at Federal in 1997. Lead is melted and dropped into water pool, so the shot towers are not in use there any more. But with Iron this would not work the melting point is too high. But a good manufacturer can not just go and buy some ball bearing from China, thees real steel balls would be harder then the barrel. But in the Steel shot is soft iron and most probably they buy it (one manufacturer is in Germany they make soft Iron shot) or they press them themselves to have the quality under control. Otherwise they would end up with loads like in the 1980ties, either no power or hot as hell. Some of the first loads in the USA they used the copper pressure method to measure the pressure these load was hot as hell, after that all change to pizo pressure measuring. During that early steel shot time some shot was way harder the what is used today. Eley makes quit good sport cartridges in steel, they are very uniform in performance, the Rotweils I used was very unconsistant. But Winchester or Federal are fine as well but they not offer high performance (European thing 12/70 with high pressure, Fiocchi also makes 28/70 1050 bar lead rounds now even 76. In Italy they can also over proof the 76 chambrings, very soon then the round follows). The Winchester 28/70 steel are very soft and the first series was very loosly filled and crimped. But also the tungsten shot rounds from the USA have in that ga. a bad pattern, the Bismuth was also not that great, but after a 28/70 1050bar lead 28g the performance drops, what ever you use in 18-21g can not give the same results. What wears on the shot gun is not the hard shot, it is the max pressure, and most of the heavy loads have to go close to the limit (stell has to do that as well to get you the power on the target). So when you shoot for years such loads out of a s/s, you get play in the lock and the welding of the barrel weakens as well. The s/s very like it not be punished with too many 1050 bar rounds. The Italian manufacturers indicate or publish the average pressure for the load, so you can choose the low pressure load for your old gun.
