I've had plenty of teachers over the years who teach a lot about jazz, but very little about saxophone. These types of videos are what I'm needing the most for my improvement.

This is all great and true. I just want to add that “good” intonation itself is not necessarily always right in the middle of the dial. Context is very important much like time, some people play on top of the beat or laying back (not to be confused with rushing or dragging) and pitch works the same way. Sometimes it’s better to be slightly on top or under the pitch based on context! - also would love to see more people talk about how phrasing and intonation are related 😎

Yes sir!! That’s definitely a more advanced concept - most of the people I’m teaching here are wayyy more on the beginner end of things.

@@DavePollack totally heard and I definitely will share this video with some of my more beginner students as well! I just feel like sometimes people use intonation as a way to scrutinize or pass negative judgment on other musicians even when the music is sounding 🔥 and felt the need to comment 😅. Love what you do man and excited to hear you again soon!

Thank you for sharing, Dave! This is an insightful video. Something that I’ve appreciated about your videos since the beginning of my watching them is your pleasant warm colored background as well as that nice background music that you play. In your set, it’s nice that you use opposing colors to portray the full color spectrum. Regarding the music, having heard it so often just reminds me that it’s another happy and active Friday. Love it, Dave. Thank you.

I usually play in tune, but a few days ago I was playing in the park, but the 90+ F temperature made it very difficult to play in tune -- I moved the mouthpiece, changed the reed 3 times, tried different volumes, tongue placement ...

Hi Dave, Thanks a lot for this invaluable lesson. I sort of knew this was happening to my tone and pitch but was wondering if it also has something to do with the cheap (but professionally set up) instrument I have. So, it appears to be the dynamics of all saxophones. I was hoping you'd touch on vibrato toward the end. Is it tongue, jaw, throat, abdomen or a combination? I keep mixing my gear as well to have a feel of everything. Used to be a bugle player.

You’re very welcome! As far as vibrato, I did an entire video on that. Go down in the description and click the link for the playlist about saxophone lessons and you’ll find it!

Do you change the ambrochure when playing soft? I have trouble playing higher notes soft. Above the G. And palm keys i can play only at 100% volume.
@DavePollack
@DavePollack Ай бұрын
Embouchure doesn’t change when playing soft for me. Try using a softer reed - if the notes just don’t speak (only air) at soft volumes, the reed might be too hard and/or the mouthpiece tip opening is too big
