Every woman that I've been in a relationship heard this song and loved it, My nephew hated Put Your Head On My Shoulder, his girlfriend whom wasn't even thought of came over. My Nephew said she would not like the song, she was a head banger. She came over and I placed the 45 record on the turntable, She moved the coffee table asking to dance with me to the song. My nephew's jaw dropped. She asked me to play it again and danced again with me, nothing between us, she just loved the song!!! These songs sometimes could tell the person you are seeing words you can't think of. My nephew had to pay me the $50.00 dollars he bet on!!!

Chod, you are a treasure! For a young man like you to show such respect to the artists from two generations ago really shows your class! No matter what you think of the individual songs the artists and groups put out you have to remember they did not have any of the modern tools that today's artists have. Whatever else you think you have to acknowledge that these people had TALENT! I can see the others who have commented already have left you more suggestions so I won't pile on, I will just say thank you - respect!!

I was a sophomore in HS in 1959, harmonizing in the boy's room and failing algebra. The story with what you said about the sound's perfection is that before you got into a recording studio you had to practice your vocals until the song was thoroughly polished -- no missed notes, no coming in on the wrong note, breath control, striving for a good harmonic blend, being in sync with one another and focusing on your voice. It wasn't the anti-music rap crap you have today. It was REAL music and hitting the right notes. If you were a singer you were your own musical instrument. The Skyliners were one of the very best doo-wop groups of the era, 1954-64. There was nothing cheap about them. They had great harmony and a great lead singer. The songs back then were love songs; found love or lost love. Teenagers craved REAL SONGS. But not anymore. Well, you can have it and good luck. I'm glad I lived it and grew up with the sweetness of melody and harmony as the soundtrack of my youth. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I remember this song from the soundtrack of the 1973 classic American Graffiti. That was a great movie! Here's three songs about losing someone - Oh Girl by The Chi-Lites, The Worst That Could Happen by Brooklyn Bridge and Silhouettes On the Shade by The Rays.

The Skyliners had a great sound.Their harmonies were fantastic. Many groups in the DooWop era and the 60s really could sing.Acapella or with minium instrumentals was the way it was then.

I agree with Dave O'Farrell, Little Anthony and the Imperials are terrific. My favorite of their's is Going Out of My Head. And for great vocals, you need to hear the song Over You by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap.

Along the same vein as the Skyliners with great vocals....The Walker Brothers - The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore, The Brooklyn Bridge - The Worst That Could Happen, The Happenings - See You In September and Jay and the Americans - Waling In the Rain. These are classics of American Rock and Roll with great talent shining through. Enjoy!

the DooWop era is way too often overlooked any more. such a shame. beautiful music....melody, harmony...great vocal arrangements. IT was just a tad before my time, but i have older siblings so i grew up listening to this stuff...but it would have been great to see these young guys n girls standing on the street corners, harmonizing. check out The Dubs, The Harptones, The Earls, The CLassics, The Drifters, Coasters. Platters, Little ANthony and the imperials, dion and the belmonts...and many more...

Only Jack Taylor (bass vocalist and guitar player) stands as the only original as of January 1st, 2021. Janet Vogel (Soprano), Jimmy Beaumont (Lead Tenor), Wally Lester (Tenor), and Joe Verscharen (Baritone) have all now passed away.

It’s a beautifully composed song that was beautifully arranged with strings and percussion and sung beautifully by the excellent lead singer and his backup singers and then topped off by the pure soprano. It’s a romantic song about lost love, from a time when love wasn’t confused with thrilling sex or lust.

My first love was rock music, apparently head banging to Status Quo at the age of 3. Still, I got into heavy metal as I grew older. I still love it. But then I came to like 50's stuff, Doo Wop, Rock and Roll, Rockabilly. Most of my life I have enjoyed it despite being born many years after. Love the cars too.

I was a toddler when this came out. I remember this song well, it got lots of airplay. This song is a classic 50s sound. If you want good music the 50s-70s is where its at.

The 50s style Doo-Whop, was practiced in the streets. Long before television became a thing. A means to occupy many people’s time away. Groups were made famous from the alleyways to the stage. There were no special audio equipment or advanced sound studios, the harmonies were genuinely real. Check out black Doo-Whop artists. They are amazing.

What I love about this music not just the voices but strings. Someone mentioned the Platters. They have a lot of great songs. Also Johnny Mathis with "The Twelfth of Never" and "Chances Are". Another one is "Sea of Love" by Phil Phillips and The Twilights, which Robert Plant covered when he was in the Honey Drippers. Both versions are great.

The vocal phrasing sounds so much like saxophone lines. So unique. Art doesn't have to reflect life. The ugliness and turmoil of the sixties was fertile ground for artists to present an alternative to what was happening in the world at that time. Artists don't have to hold a mirror up to all the misery.

Sir ---------in those days, you needed an arranger ------possibly an orchestra , a producer & studio engineer. Most recordings were on 4-track mixers, & they were all done on 2" tape, which captured sound so much more fully than the computer ever will. There is depth to the sound .---------and yes, the record companies spent millions, developing talent. This group were all 17 y/o, except for janet Vogel, who was all of 16 y/o. ---------Lead vocal, Jimmy Beaumont , the Skyliners were from Pittsburg, PA.

I was a young teenager when this song came out I believe in 1959. What an honor it was to listen to this kind of doo-wop music at the beginning of rock and roll. Don't get me wrong there were plenty of bad songs also but the gems like this one were what kept us listening to the radio. So many great songs and artists came out of this era, I don't know if it will ever happen again. I believe "the day the music died" was the day big business took it over and the artists looks became more important than the music.

In the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's, you had to be perfect or you wouldn't make it, they've lowered standards like they usually do so more people can make it in the entertainment business, that's usually how it works in all things. In many ways, they've made it too easy then technology entered.
