The year was 1959 - it was the height of doo-wop group pop music. Living in or around Pittsburgh PA we heard the beautiful voice of Jimmy Beaumont of The Skyliners singing "Since I Don't Have You". And there were great background harmonies and the soaring soprano climax featuring Janet Vogel. This song is seared into our memories and our hearts.

You're right. '59 was a crazy good year. I remember "Poison Ivy" by the Coasters came out that year, too. Acapella stuff was great. "Since I Don't Have You" reminds me of "Lovers Island" by the Blue Jays (1961) Or "The Closer You Are" by the Channels (1956). Street corner stuff. Sad that the music industry kept lookin' for the 'new song' and the 'new beat' barely gave air play after two songs sound alike. It's cool I can type them into KZfaq and hear them once again. Did you ever hear "Paradise" by the Temptations (1962)?

Janet Vogel replaced my mom, Barbara Volbrecht when the band split from the original members. On the single (45 rpm record) they put "Since I Don't Have You" and "Pennies From Heaven" on the flip side. Both were hits and the band broke up after that. The original drummer and back up singer (mom) left the group.

Janet Vogel was hitting those high "you's" at the end. Since I Don't Have You was recorded in 1958 and released in 1959. Janet was born in 1941 meaning she would have been around 16 when she sang on this song! Tragically Janet Vogel died of carbon monoxide poisoning in 1980. She was only 37 and left behind 3 children.

What a lead vocal beautiful gift from God , back in the day many artists thought they where a black group .if all those 50's and 60's groups where around now they would of all been multi millionaires instead of being ripped off and missing out on publishing rights like they where back then ,artist of today have more of a say and less talented that they have all the technology to sound better when there voices singing live doesn't compare to the lead singers of sonny Williams of the platters and Clyde mcphatter ,and Ben E King and rudy lewis and jonny Moore of the drifters all they had was a mic and their God given talent of a voice that still stands the test of time back in that time
