you could technically make the base 5x5x5 and make where you are standing a lootbag hatch and make the bags drop on the terrain

You could technically make a smaller base by making it on one of the trader bases since there is a "glitch" or something that allows you to build onto a trader's outpost without getting kicked out

@@samiam4544 that's why you need to use the scaffolding ladder. It allows you to use mele in quite a decent area, doesn't allow zombies to go through (crawlers included) and you can shoot comfortably through

This design is a death trap. There literally is zero redundancy. And you can't defend against the random zombie deciding to just munch on your back wall. Add a ladder or staircase (if you also want dogs to keep pathing) to the roof, so zombies keep pathing when you go up to kill random wall munchers. Add machicolations so you can safely shoot zombies munching on your walls (railings), crenelations against cop spit (plates - cops may see through, but spit is still catched by them) and a cope cage against birds (railings). Then, this is a pretty solid tower base with a ground floor melee and shooting position (still an odd choice, but it does work). A single copy of this design can't ever be redundant. But you can have backup clones of the design - just plant more bases in jumping distance and have holes in your crenelations and cage so you can jump to the next base if one gets breached. Use hatches as drawbridges if you want to be able to switch towers without jumping (you might have a broken leg and be fully out of stamina when you need to fall back). A gap of two blocks is enough to make zombies search for a new path to you (don't forget to close the hatches to break the path after you walked over to the next tower).

You need wall safes. You craft them in the workbench with forged iron, mechanical parts, and springs. When tucked into concrete or steel, they're an incredibly durable storage solution, and "extremely" compact (with lots of space on the inside). They're 2500 hp as an object, but being a box, they'd need to be broken twice to be destroyed. Also, since they are flush and mostly inside the block they're adjacent to, they don't get hit much. I can't imagine doing a high game stage horde base without them. Although the steel wall cabinet looks like a very workable solution as well. Cool base, very functional for the size. I can't see going this minimalist at that game stage. But as a "fallback" (in case your more grand horde base design fails) it's a nice compact plan B. It could also make a good entry "funnel" for your _home_ base, to deal with wandering hordes & screamers sticking their nose in your business ;) Having a "relatively strong" solution at 100 blocks for the build, can be as handy or useful as having a "very strong" solution at say 500 blocks. Makes it easy to add something like this to other things you may be doing/building. I appreciate the thought given to softening up the zombies, for player-kills for max xp. That's the ideal scenario. In a larger base there's some things you can do which can "sort" trap damage by zombie height, with the assumption that taller zombies _generally_ take more softening up ;) Also appreciate the desire to get zombies into the kill zone as quickly as possible for kills/loot, rather than trying to slow their path for safety. You can shift the activation floor plates to _your_ side of the fighting barrier, so that you activate them with your own feet, depending on where you stand. It's somewhat more resistant to zombie damage that way. Although if you want a really reliable trigger, you're going to need motion detectors and a much larger design. At high game-stage, you can just skip triggers entirely, to reduce your fail-points, as every horde will last all night, so the only position which matters is "on". On a purely aesthetic note, I love the paint job. I think the revision with the ramp is a good idea as well. But I _think_ there is a ramp block with an attached side-plate, to make the aesthetic a little smoother with that change. PS: Is this at "Adventurer" difficulty? I usually play at Warrior difficulty, as it's "hard ...ish" without turning into an obsessive grind for ammo (zombies aren't complete and total bullet sponges like on the highest setting). Anyway, they're definitely going down very fast. But perhaps it's the traps making it look that way. My own "best horde base" is also my "worst horde base". It's best because it's completely and totally dominant (in A18, 19, 20, and 21, at 'any' settings). Beyond safety, it's geared to maximize XP & loot per minute as much as humanly possible, while also minimizing repairs. But it's XP="optional", the base will murder any stragglers which get through the kill box. So that takes all the tension out of it. But it's my 'worst' horde base as well though, because it actually murders engagement in the game along with the zombies, hehe. It's just more 'fun' if the zombies have a fighting chance. You wanna fight for your life on horde night, not horrendously maul helpless zombies for profit hehe.
@CautiousPancake

Wow Kathrynck, thanks for that response - huge! For the wall safe - that sounds like a better option than the wall cabinet - thanks! And agree on this being a useful little addon to your crafting base, as a front door zombie greeting :) I've done my side activation (for the trigger plates) before, although I generally lack the coordination to pull that off well, and my theory was that anything that destroyed the trigger plates was probably going to do in the dart traps too. And if there's a ramp block with the plate side I'm going to be very annoyed with myself as I went looking but didn't find it :D :D (but now I have to go looking again lol) For difficulty it's actually set to Insane - the dart traps + tier 6 weapon + AP + penetrator just rips through them though. The radiated hawaiians when the dart traps are gone though just eat the ammo for breakfast though, it makes a huge difference when they are gone. Love your best/worst base description - particularly that the worst part of a great base is that it's no fun - it's so true! The most memorable hordes are the ones you get through with 10 health and no ammo left :)
@kathrynck
@kathrynck Жыл бұрын
@@CautiousPancake Yeah, moving the trigger plates probably wouldn't protect them much in that compact of a design. Seems like they're pretty much full-time-on though. But 1500 darts lasts about 5 to 5 and a half out of your 6 hours if just left "on" full-time (assuming 60 minute days and 18 hours daylight). So I can see the temptation to have them on a trigger to stretch out that time a little bit. Zombies hate to go 'down' if you're 'up'. I suspect making the base 5 blocks tall, but sinking it down a block... with a 1 block deep trench around the outside of it... so it's still basically 4 blocks above ground level. But in a 1 block deep depression (except at the entry ramp). uh... like a foundation which is exposed by a trench. would keep them from getting interested in your back wall. (probably! zombies can be weird) Or just make it 5 tall and use 2 ramp blocks. So beating through the back wall doesn't give them access to your legs. either of those "should" help pathing (should). I'm not sure there's a plate-sided ramp block... I just _feel_ like i've seen that... not sure! I may be imagining it! It wouldn't functionally change anything, but since you took the time to paint things... :) Did you notice that the electrical trap wires are a different height now in A21? The wire connects exactly 1 block high, instead of 1.5 blocks high. It's a little bit annoying to use, have to get creative to put multiple electric wires through the same zombie. Doesn't affect this base though. Probably simpler to use for players who weren't counter-sinking their poles I guess. Best use of 'your side' plate triggers I've had was either right under your fighting position (but that's basically just "always on", but with a little bit of an option to pause it), or right behind your firing position, so you can just take a step back when you're reloading or repairing, and the darts kick in while you're indisposed. OH, also a kinda fancy 'hatch hallway' design "with traps", but the player activates the traps at a 2-block offset to their standing position, so as you lose hatches & back up, different traps activate, moving with you. That's probably a day 7000 hatch hallway, but it lacks an elegant solution to demolishers, and anything blowing up in a tight hallway takes a lot of structure damage. That was with tripwires though. My most recent tinkering is just 2 platforms, with a walkway and fighting position at one end of the walkway. Pretty stock-standard horde base really. The only clever detail is that I made the top half of zombie-climing side out of 'bars' and the scaffolding ladders, so we can't shoot it up. It's not great, just good enough to be kinda exciting on day 50-100. Has melee options, but being in the wasteland, there's already tons of rads & demos, so melee doesn't work so well. It's a duo-base though. Melee and double-wide fighting positions are harder. Zombies stack up 3 across in a 2-block fighting area, and the 3 behind them can reach to hit the barrier, so a melee barrier takes a lot of extra damage compared to a 1-wide fighting spot. I tried 2 separate fighting spots, but all the zombies came to one side, then the other side later in the night. Might have to go to a 1-wide (get them all together) splitting into 2 equally tempting forked paths so they distribute evenly at 2 separate fighting spots.

If you were to implement a choke point in your base design that forced the zombie AI to crawl to get to you, then demo zombies would no longer be a threat. Also wall safes for storage and storage crates placed as floor blocks might help to address all of the loot.
@CautiousPancake
@CautiousPancake Жыл бұрын
Thanks Jaymunnie - I put in a wall cabinet at 17:35, but as someone else pointed out a wall safe is stronger (although the cabinet has more storage space). For the crawling that's an interesting question. I avoided it for this base as I have another crawl base coming up and didn't want to double dip :) But also, crawling usually needs to spreads out the zombies a bit more as the go from running to crawling, so I've always done it with a longer (longer than 3 blocks) path. Not to say it wouldn't work, though - I might have to have a play, thanks!

As soon as there is a ledge like that one to get in the base anywhere in my games, they will stack up and get in there. 1000%. Same with the 2 high ladder. At some point they will stack on top of each other and reach it.
@CautiousPancake
@CautiousPancake Жыл бұрын
They will usually stack where there's a choke point on their pathing - what I tried to do here was only put the ledges in spots that the zombies shouldn't get stuck. At the entrance the wall was solid all around so that they hopefully can't get on the roof. If one or two did, the SMG turret would eventually get them, but for rads it could take a while. I don't recall any zombies getting there for any of the tests, until the pathing was already broken - like when they came through the back wall. So if you're having trouble with them stacking - try and move your ladders to somewhere they zombies don't want to go - if that makes sense?

I actually tested this back in A20 (and I don't believe it's cahnged) - and double fences doesn't actually do more damage, just provides redundancy for when the first breaks. @CautiousPancake Жыл бұрын
Sorry that I didn't include the wiring, I was worried the video was already getting too long. To wire it up, i did the following Generator to smg Generator to both electric fences below the generator Each fence to the corresponding fence on the other side, that order is important so that you can repair. Generator to each trigger plate. Each trigger plate to one of the dart traps next to it. Then that dar trap to the one above or below. The smg turret was angled so that the bottom of the view was the top of the base. So about 45 degrees. Hopefully that helps, let me know if anything doesn't make sense!
@Wineblood
@Wineblood Жыл бұрын
@@CautiousPancake that's great thanks. I wouldn't chain the wiring of the dart traps, one of them being destroyed would stop the second one from working, I'd wire them both up to the plate directly. Minor change but i think every optimisation matters at that size.
@CautiousPancake
@CautiousPancake Жыл бұрын
@@Wineblood Agree generally on not chaining and you're right 100% that if you lost the wrong dart trap it would stop the second one firing. For this base I'm not sure it will make a difference though, as the dart traps have 2500 hp vs the trigger plate at 1000, so most likely any explosion takes out the trigger plate first - but agree - non-chained is most robust, so I should have done it that way!

Oooooh love me a challenge. Free standing, or using POI's? Targetting what gamestage? And is the goal to survive or fight?
@SailingOTR
@SailingOTR Жыл бұрын
@@CautiousPancake Essentially a free standing bedrock base that does not use any POI, though that might be possible if built on an outside wall of one of the big POIs. Goal is to survive. I am very new to the playing the game but have watched many videos from some really outstanding creators. I am an old joystick guy and find it hard to adapt to keyboard and mouse. My idea in a nutshell, though some might think it cheesey. A three square hole straight down to bed rock. Starting at least 5 blocks down but not too far down coz the zoms will not path, build a small enclosure in one corner. It would be 2 blocks high with bars to keep me from falling out. In the opposite corner one of the minimal tiny bit blocks. This will entice the zoms to jump down to you. They almost always fall off the small bit. Once the zoms are all piled up down below, throw in a bunch of grenades at about 3:45 AM. All dead at once and a big lump of XP. I kinda sorta did this but never fine tuned the whole thing. it did work OK.

So you could be right. I thought the armor reduction applied to all firearms and it was only the EXTRA penetration that applied to the rifles. All AP ammo gives 1 target penetration. So I was taking the penetrator for the increasing armor reduction which I thought would increase damage, but now I'm not so sure it does...

@@CautiousPancake I think the wall safe is slightly more secure (from spit or hitting anyway). Only because it's broadly speaking "inside" another block. And as a lockable container, it has to be destroyed twice (so 2500 hp is really 5000). Explosions don't care though.

@@kathrynck Agreed, I had to go check them it's a trade of extra storage for the cabinet (72 slots with 1500 hp) vs the wall safe (40 slots with 2500 hp). Given the location the extra hp is probably more important!

Thanks - agree wall safe would probably have been a better choice than the wall cabinet I used, as it has 2500 instead of 1500 health (but only 40 slots instead of the 72 on the cabinet). So depends on if you need the extra storage (or want the extra protection - I'd probably go the protection).

Thanks for the feedback - in hindsight I should have done a full build in a seperate video, wen't half and half and it didn't really work :( In case it helps, to wire it up, i did the following Generator to smg Generator to both electric fences below the generator Each fence to the corresponding fence on the other side, that order is important so that you can repair.

LIBRARY OF UN-PLAYED GAMES AND DESTROYED GAME RATTING: 6/17/23 Updated Review OF AN ANOTHER UNWANTED VERSION 21. WHATEVER! WELL IT WILL NEVER BE FINISHED IN THE REAL VERSION THAT WAS LOVED BY SO MANY. Not the same game we paid for and What we have now is a game broken and unwanted. All is left to do with this game now is to shelf it in the UN-played Library along with so many others. MY FINIAL POINT: All we wanted was the game we all enjoyed and waited for to be finished that is with every house with a quest and items to find and prizes and nothing more. You did not even have to make an ending. But what have gotten was another version that is not even the game we paid for and so whats left to say. It's been a nice run but like a lot of developers they grow tired of their work and just destroy it with something else. "Could of you just made yourself a hidden version and left ours alone and finished the dam thing."

Sorry if I missed it, but why don't you use steel? Surely you'd have enough steel by day 119+ for such a small base. Steel has much better explosion resistance than concrete, if I'm not mistaken.
@CautiousPancake
@CautiousPancake Жыл бұрын
I didn't mention it and thanks for asking - you absolutely could use steel! I tend not to, as I feel (and this is just my opinion) that using steel can sometimes cover up a flaw in a base design, allowing it to get through on high HP rather than a solid build, and that generally a good build will be fine at max gamestage with concrete if there aren't any issues. For this base though, my thinking was more specific - given the base relies on the fences in particular, and the dart traps to a lesser extent, any explosion is likely going to take out those due to the low health of the traps, and that having steel won't make any difference. Although now I've written that - I don't actually know if steel protects things behind it better than concrete? I'll have to check! Anyway - that was my reasoning 😀
@kathrynck

@@CautiousPancake AFAIK, explosive damage just has a radius, and hits everything in that radius. Although blocks which move the explosive source further from the traps obviously help, or which get cop spit impact points away from the traps (small aoe effect).
