"But you know where you came from, you know where you're going, and you know where you belong / You said I was ill and you were not wrong." I moved around a lot as a kid and these lines mean a lot to me. Put "Nowhere Fast" beside this song and you have my entire life up until age 20. Even with my personal associations aside -- every single friggin thing about this song is genius. One minute of Moz's lyrics is good for hours of reflection, and the music is completely beautiful. PERFECT!

Not half! Was only sixteen I think - went down with some mates from school. We hung out by the river before the show and smoked some very badly rolled spliffs. I'd not really heard much Smiths by then, but they were excellent and I knew I was in the presence of greatness.

stellajayne this comment is actually godlike. Captures the teenage experience beautifully.

It took me many years to realize that Andy Rourke carried the Smiths.

Joyce and him made a sublime rhythm section, each one of the four make the band what it was

@Thegreatbluecat ....been a Smiths fan since they formed and that has to be one of the best simplistic statements about the band I've read! Passion...Awe...and Truth in one raw sentence!

End of 1982 The Jam split and I spent a few months wondering whether Haircut 100 were any good, Then the new romantic thing started and I started to get really worried because of that and some talk of a heavy metal revival. Then I saw this and Johnny's Jetglow 330 and I knew I'd be alright, although I never expected The Smiths to be the only group of the decade.

Only group of the decade? There was brilliant music like The Go-Betweens, Prefab Sprout, Replacements, REM, Pixies, I could go on....

@@thepublichousebrandcom Well Lee Remick is '78. I'd have to put the others down as AOR radio stuff although I have a best of REM album on IRS.
