Carried and used a Sterling for may years in the army and that is hands down the best explanation of that sudden barrel drop that happens when you have a stoppage or run dry. Also kudos for firing as a lefty as that puts your face pretty close to the ejection port and that always gave me a bit of anxiety.

That smile at the end is one of a man who has found the pinnacle of happiness and purpose in his work.

I think this is the first time I've seen visible sparks coming out of the chamber at such a consistent pace on a gun.

We used to get to shoot the sterling once a year as a 'familiarisation' shoot and found it to be a pleasure to shoot compared to our SLR's. It was a fine sub-machine gun for it's day.

It breaks the heart that we don't have a current production semi-auto PCC version of the ZX-7. Seriously, a BlasTech chambered for Alliance ammunition? I've been needing this beast for years and didn't know it existed until yesterday 😂

The Sterling SMG was my personal weapon for 20 odd years and we had to qualify once a year. I found tucking the butt under the side of the shoulder strap of the 58 webbing gave me better control when firing from the standing or kneeling positions. Which leads me to wonder why Ian and others do not wear webbing when firing military weapons.

It seems that some sub machine guns hit some kind of sweet spot where the cyclic rate, recoil impulse, and ergonomics just come together and work. It would be interesting to analyze how the parts come together. I've seen you shoot 9mm sub guns that didn't work that well, that 30 round .45 ACP mag dump was impressive.

The beautiful thing about this weapon is that it can be hidden due to its small size and different design in general appearance. It is also very suitable for those who use the left side while shooting. Some modifications can be made to it, such as making a variable-length rear support. There is a cylindrical magazine for it and a silencer can be attached to it. There is a type that can fire small missiles used by special forces. Yes, it is a tactical weapon despite its old design.

As a Brit who's dad used to use the Sterling whislt in the Army this was back in the 70s. I was always fond of the Sterling even though many or my dads colleagues said it couldn't hit barn door with its range. The purpose of the Sterling was secondary support to the SLR L1A1 ( inch pattern FAL). Used by tank crews, drivers etc as it was a compact weapon ideal for these roles. Also during the 70s it was used by the Imperial storm troopers who upgraded to a blaster.

I was very surprised at how little muzzle climb this exhibited with the magazine dump. Personally mags dumps were not important to me, but it allows me to see how well the firearm is balanced. Thank you sir for another stellar video.

Defiantly a right hander, during basic training we were taught when shooting from the hip to grip the barrel shroud in a way that let the mag rest on the left wrist to support it.

Going back and watching the shooting on the Sterling, comparing it to this, it looks like this is a little more violent. only by a bit though, perhaps a slightly slower cyclic rate from the Sterling but both don't kick a whole lot. This just kicks a little bit more, understandably so given the diameter of .45 compared to 9mm.

My personal service weapon was a 9mm Sterling and was taught to rest the underside of my left forearm (facing up)on the underside of the magazine . So the magazine weight was never an issue anyway. Being a lefty Ian you can't normally do that, but I can imagine that a 45acp sterling, held in this fashion may help.

I assumed Gun Jesus would always know when the mag was going to run out. Guess he's not Fortune Telling Gun Jesus, just Wise Gun Jesus. Love your work Ian. One of my favourite channels, even though I'm not really a gun person. Just appreciate interesting & informative videos presented really well. More into the engineering and stories behind the weapon, but will admit I was shocked at having to wait an extra day for the shooting video. So used to watching old episodes and not having to wait, I realised I am keen for these also. I do kind of miss the intro music though. A little bonus when going that far back into the catalogue.

I had a go with a semi-auto ZX-5 many years ago, it used Sten mags, it jammed so hopelessly on the fourth round (with ball ammo) that we gave up with it. It was one of those situations where the round nose-dives and gets wedged between the feedlips iirc. Had to take the magazine apart and the spring went flying and 20-odd rounds of ammo.

The "flinch" is also the heavy bolt closing on an empty mag and chamber.

When the proverbial hits the fan there is nothing quiet like four fives in quick succession to save the day.

Genuinely think this is pretty awesome. Would love to see a C or complete clamp around the barrel that allows for a foregrip to be attached and a space on top for a red dot.

That magazine flapping around like a hummingbird wing... seeing it from the left rear, at first I thought the barrel was flexing up and down like some sort of telegraph key... 😁

The camera's autofocus was wrong in the last shot such that I thought Ian was doing the outro on a greenscreen, but thankfully it adjusted.

Its unfortunate that when Ian was doing the Stemple videos 2 weeks ago he didn't have the opportunity to also fire them in .45ACP. The conversion requires a few minutes of time. A lever, push pin, and screw allow removal of the barrel and shroud, mag well, bolt and its extention. Reverse order and the gun is up and running.

Very nice. It was interesting to see what a .45ACP version could do. I regret not taking the opportunity to buy a Stirling semi-auto Mk6 back in the seventies before they became prohibited up here in Canada.

The Aussies came up with a 9mm SMG called F1 to replace their Owens, and it had the pistol grip from the L1A1 battle rifles they used at the time. Interesting aspect of the F1 is that the magazine was inserted on top of the breech and not to the side like Sterling. Made for better feeding and better accuracy as the weight of the mag helped keep the barrel down, but the front and rear sight had to be offset from the centre as the vertical mag was in the way. It even had a bayonet mount for the L1A1 bayonet. Crazy.

At 4:52 Anyone else catch where He says the gun is a "ZX-5 " ,although it is corrected with "again, ZX-7" on the video with text? Well shot and controlled, especially for being shot left handed with the ejection port so close to the face, yet even Ian's eye doesn't flinch.

Just re-watched the Sterling 9mm at the range video Ian did a few years ago, and the 9mm rate of fire is indeed a lot slower, closer to that of the M3 grease gun.

I spent a couple of years in a Canadian Army reserve armoured reconnaissance unit. Our primary-issue weapon was a Canadian-made version of the Sterling submachine gun. It was designated SMG C1, or Submachine Gun, Canadian Issue 1. Cosmetically, there were a few small differences between the Sterling and the SMG C1, the most noticeable one being the fact that there was a muzzle protrusion on the Sterling, while the C1 didn't have it. Even though the Canadian and British SMG's both mounted the same bayonet that was also used on the British L1A1 SLR and the Canadian FN C1A1 rifles, the bayonet mounts were arranged differently. The parkerizing on the body of the SMG C1 was also smoother and a bit lighter in colour. One of the great tragedies of my short time in the army reserves was that I never got a chance to fire the SMG C1 with either live rounds or blanks, while I'd fired the FN C1A1 quite a few times.

Watching that charging handle reciprocate back and forth right in front of Ian's eye made me wince.

The DMAX 100 is a very rare and obscure side fed Sten-like gun that also came chambered in .45 as well as 10mm. You should definitely check that gun out!

In the close up it looks like the case is being ejected before the powder has fully burned off.

In slow motion you can see that the recoil impulse comes mostly from the bolt hitting the back of the receiver.

I am curious, when reloading as a lefty would it be easier to just tilt the gun anti-clockwise so the mag-well points towards the ground? Anyway, thanks for another fun little range video :-)

I wonder how much less you'd notice the extra weight of the magazine if you shot it right-handed instead of left-handed. Right-handed, the extra weight would be more towards the shooter's centerline; left-handed, it's hanging away from the shooter.

Also, the bolt moving forward on an empty chamber does accentuate the forward "flinch".

10 out of 10 Storm Troopers like this (although it would make no difference for them :D )
