One can see why Buddy liked watching Carl. The only rock drummer I have seen who embodies the rich, fluid, technically perfect style of the master, though in a prog/rock genre, of course. His solos, along with those of Neil Peart are things of beauty and wonders to behold. Carl is certainly among those, like Neil, who sit on the apex of the rock percussion world.

don't go overboard. Buddy liked him because he dated his daughter, and was a rock drummer with traditional grip. Carl is less than average. I don't care who he played with. He can't keep time, and is the Lars of his day.

What a great time to see them in their young hungry full of energy years what an experience that must have been. I was still just 10 & 12 and hadn't been exposed to them until 14 or 15 and still a few years from my first concert but that was a magical time for all music and they were such a powerful force of masterful brilliance. I'm certain it was beyond incredible! I didn't get to see them until the early 90's totally unexpected and unplanned and it will always be one of my top 3 concerts ever. I will forever be grateful I got to experience ELP live. Keith and Greg rest peacefully and thanks for the music 👍

Funny you mention that, Carl took drum lessons from my neighbor, Roy Burns back in the early 1980's. I was just a kid...I listened to them play from the driveway. Carl is/was always trying to learn and improve...a true musician!

Some incredible hand-eye coordination going on there. I remember seeing ELP about the time they first arrived in the US at the San Diego Sports Arena in 1971. At that time no one was using a Moog synthesizer like Keith Emerson.

+Wesley Graham - I was at that concert, chest pressed against the stage, CP's bass drum within arms reach .... the had 1/2 the arena closed off behind ELP w/a curtain so at most it was 1/2 capacity ..... they played all of the first album and all of Tarkus +++ .... legendary stuff ..........

Steven Graham, Hypnotherapist Or, really, since. When he was so dependent on it during the BSS tour, that Moog was prepared like it was being sent to the Moon. I’ve been listening to the WBMF recording for over 40 years now and I am still awed.

It's not EYE hand coordination. He could do this blindfolded.

Carl, a snare and two stricks - perfection! Though I always loved the gongs, the fire bell and the revolving kit...

In truth there is no 'best drummer' some love Buddy Rich, others will love Papa Jo. It's really down to who's playing speaks to you most. I love Simon Phillips though..

Robert Dore You are wrong. There is a best drummer - that would be the one that is the only drummer to do the 17th prime number toccata - that would be Ginger. No other drummer has managed 13, and 19 appears unattainable.
