A wonderful maze of a place, Oystermouth Castle began its life in the 12th century. It was built by William de Londres, who also owned Ogmore Castle.
The castle was destroyed twice by the Welsh, and the De Londres line ended in 1215 when the Welsh retook the Gower.
The Barony of the Gower was then given to John de Braose by Henry II in the 13th century and with it Oystermouth castle. The de Braose's not only rebuilt Oystermouth in stone but increased its size, extravagance, and defensive capabilities.
It was one of the last DeBraos's, Aline de Braose, who revamped the chapel and put it on the map as one of the finest examples of a castle chapel in South Wales. It was her marriage to John de Mowbray that passed the castle and the Lordship of Gower to the de Mowbrays. She is said to haunt the castle to this day.
It fell into decline in the middle ages, but was restored once more in the 19th century, and again in the early 21st. Upon completion of these restorations, Oystermouth was opened to the public.

Another good video and Oystermouth is a favourite of mine. First time I went around it there wasn't any walkways to the chapel. Little clarity on the name 'The Mumbles'.... It's a name for the area not the village itself. The village (and yes it still is a village officially) is Oystermouth. The name Mumbles comes from the French/Norman name for breasts and refers to the two mounded islands on which the lighthouse can be found on one off mumbles head. The local council for the are and others were looking into making Oystermouth a town, but the locals were against it as they like to keep their village status. Not really an issue though when Wales' largest village Skewen has a population near 10,000 more than double that of Oystermouth.

Thank you. Well that explains the name. Trust the french to name the area after a body part. You'd never catch us doing anything like that. 🤥

I'm sorry, could you say the name of the area again? I didn't catch that.

Also...love those glass walkways. Do you think they add to the experience?
@MostlyCastles
@MostlyCastles 3 жыл бұрын
They definitely add to the whole experience, not least because it's always unnerving to walk on glass but you can not get to the chapel which you couldn’t before. I wouldn't like the job of cleaning them though.

I couldn't comment on patreon.. This is lovely.. Is there any indication about facilities here? Looks like there's a lot to see so would spend some time, so assume they have loos...? With entry fee too...? Don't fancy the garderobe. 😆
@MostlyCastles
@MostlyCastles 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. There are loos just outside the castle, which is probably a good thing because it doesn't rob the castle of any space. It's only £4 to enter and if you are in the mood it is only a stones throw from the Lovespoon Gallery and the seafront.

@@MostlyCastles it is one of those things that does limit where I can visit... terrible anxiety! So many lovely places in the middle of nowhere that I know I'll never get to. Thats another reason these videos are brilliant!

Thank you so much. That's lovely to hear. It's perfectly understandable. We use an app called Flush which tells you where the nearest loos are. It has come in very handy. There's an app for everything.
