As for this video:
After trying to work with the Para 3 the Para 3 LW is quite an upgrade.
Personally I do not have an issue with the steel of the off centered blade. As for how it carries....well....

I have one in CPM-SPY27. Action was terrible and I couldn't take out the side to side movement out of the blade. Took it out just this morning and decided to work on it. First I tightened both pivot screws until they would no longer move then I backed them out slowly a little bit at a time. Now, I've got no play and it's drop-shut. Went on KZfaq afterwards and typed "spyderco para 3 lw' and saw your video. Thanks for this. I'm fidgeting with my LW and it seems to be getting better. You make great reviews. Looking forward to seeing more. Thanks again. 🙂

Glad you liked the video. I think the Para3 is a pretty cool knife. For my liking the grind is a bit thick. Modded the Para3 to a slim mod and reground the blade. SPY27 is a steel I have yet to try...

Thanks for your review. During the last year my life changed a lot and also my knives preferences did. I moved to the countryside and I do a lot of gardening, I produce my vegetables, I go frequently in the woods. Pocket knife is not an addiction any more, I really need it ad I use it many times every day. My point of view changed, now I think that ease of open and close with one hand it is important (spyderhole is far better than any other solution in my opinion), also I need a knife with a very good cut and easy to carry. Because of these reasons now I use my spyderco folders the most. Now I have a manix in my pocket and I think it is a very good choice. Yes I still like Cold Steel and many others knife makers, but now Spyderco is my favorite.

That is cool! The fact that now you NEED them and so found out that while you like certain brands others are more suited to you and your needs. And as such you now have a favorite! I think that is simply AWESOME! No amount of me testing will be able to even compete with you actually needing it for your everyday chores and what you learn from that. Thanks for sharing that with me and I hope all is well and you will chime in from time to time to let me know if what I found out you can relate to!

I have a tremendous amount of knives varying in price from budget to 'I am an idiot for buying it.' The Para3 LW ends up in my pocket 90% of the time. It is my fav! Fits my hands so perfectly. I ain't got no issues with the steel. Although, I will say the Civivi Chevalier is getting a lot of pocket time lately.

you're preaching to the choir. I have an obsession with knives and if I would not have a youtube channel to review and test different knives then the Para 3 LW would probably be very high on my list of "what I carry" I don't have the Chevalier...but I will look into it. Thanks

I just sold mine. Not because I did not like it but because I needed the money. the new owner likes it very much! He just received it yesterday and told me that he thinks it's a very cool little knife. I hope you will like it as well. TBH i would chose the Para 3LW over many other, more expensive models. As for the steel...it got a bad reputation due to the fact that some people do not know how to deal with it. BD1N is a good steel for edc. It takes a very fine edge and is pretty stable especially at lower edge angles. I kept mine at 14-15 dps and, with regular edc tasks i never had any issues..

@@SpartanJohns Ahh OK. I received mine about a week ago and like it very much. I keep it on my kitchen table where I dine and work on my PC, I fidget with it and admire its simplicity and uniqueness every time I notice it in my peripheral vision. The only thing I feel negative about it is its price. Although I still think it's worth the money I paid for, but as with all my other expensive knives such as Bark River Knives, I am hesitant to use and abuse it. I am thinking about buying a Swiss Army Knife Sentinel for outdoor use (mostly to harvest some vegies and fruits in my back yard). With the price of roughly $40, the Sentinel is a very light weight, single bladed very good slicer and it is cosmetically pleasant to see and hold in your hand. Again, thank you for your review on the Spyderco knife.

@@nabedono Sometimes, with new knives, I am also hesitant to use them for "any and all jobs". However...that is why they are made and the higher price should translate to them being able to do more tasks without taking damage. I used the Para3LW for a lot of things. Never thought about "it breaking' or taking chips/damege to the blade. BD1n is a pretty stable steel. Even at lower edge angles. I think the more you will use it the more you might enjoy it. For the past few weeks I started using the Kapara. It is a higher end knife and in the first days i was a bit careful. But, the more I carry it and the more i use it...the more I can appreciate it. The whole last week it was in my pocket and made wood shavings for fires, cut grass and thorns(i cleared a bit of a trail where I take the dogs out for a walk), cut food and cardboard. The more you use it...the more you like it and the less you'll worry about it. Since I do not intend on selling it and preserving "it's good state" i do with it whatever I need to. I am glad you liked the video...and I am hoping you will enjoy your knife more and more....

Thank you for your reply and further more opinions based on your in the field experience on Para3. I still enjoy just looking at my Para3 and fidgeting with it and maybe when I go to the woods in the near future I will take it with me to work on the wood and more. I watched many of your old videos and I noticed you had some review on Bark River Knives but you seem to prefer folding knives in the past 5 years or so. I would be interested to watch a video of yours explalaing why you prefer a folding knife over a non folding knives to carry in the wood.

@@nabedono Sorry for the late reply. I still have most of the fixed blades I used/reviewed. As time goes by, free time is reduced, and outdoor activities get less and less...so the time I can spend outdoors I don't film as much. Folding knives are an edc item for me and they do have different locking mechanisms and come in a variety of steels....all of that meke them more fun to use/test/talk about. But I still do like fixed blades. Folders are just more practical for me nowadays. I also moved recently and could only take a few things with me...i took folders because they weigh less and take up less space

I bought my first Paramilitary2 in 2010 or 2011 and I fall in love with that knife. With the time i bought more PM2s with different steels and colors, but the first one is still my EDC knife today. She's a lil bit old, with scratches and stuff but still rock solid and performs exccellent. The rest are just for collect and baby them. I think, PM2 is the perfect Edc knife, and the PM3s are too short/small. But thats just me. My thoughts. I appreciate your videos! Thanks for keep uploading!

@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 2 жыл бұрын
For me the G10 version is not as comfortable in hand. The LW is much more comfortable. The 'sprint runs' from what I have seen have a much better grind than the regular steels. The only downside(for me not a problem) with the LW model is that most are off centered. I don't mind at all but some do. I have no issues with rust/spots on 99% of steels. I was looking into the Maxamet version....but it is waaay out of my price range(for this model). I am currently carrying/testing K390...so far I am very pleased with it. slight patina but I don't mind.

I had 2 of these (BD1N and S90V sprint) and as much as I loved it, I just could not get a good grip with my preferred grip (choking back with my thumb on the ramp) - my pinky would be slipping off the rounded butt of the handle. I had to move to PM2 to get more room. But apart from that - I can fully agree with what you said. It is a great smaller knife with good ergos and cool look (the blade could have been a little thinner but it is not too bad - I could regrind it, but I actually really liked the finish on the BD1N version). Maybe I will give it a try later down the road again.
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on the "too thick blade". For the size...a thinner grind would have been more suited! TBH I think BD1N is ok for edc tasks...it sharpens easily and touch-ups are also quite easy/fast...but yes....the better steels would make this one even more interesting. I have a Native Salt(LC200N). The action and comfort on that are horrible. Because you mentioned the S90V version(I never seen that-few sprint runs make it over here) i thought how cool would a PARA3LW with LC200N be....I would probably go for that in a second! I hardly use the thumbramp to actually put my thumb on it. Your PM 2 looks great! That convex thin grind is fantastic! I was looking into K390 lately...Maybe, if I can gather the necessary funds I will get a Stretch 2 in K390
@matusknives
@matusknives 2 жыл бұрын
@@SpartanJohns Thank you for your kind words - the PM2 was my second first regrind on a pocket knife (I did a complete blade thinning and convexing a longer time ago on a GiantMouse Ace Iona, but with a belt grinder) and once my workshop is back up I will take it to some Trizact belts to clean up the scratches. Yes I very much enjoy its performance now. Stretch 2 in k390 must be a great knife. Japanese Spyderco k390 knvies are run at 64 - 65 HRC (my PM2 is around 63). Plus the handle looks even more comfortable than the PM2. I myself am tempted by it as well - but it would force me to pick either the Strech 2 or PM2 as they would overlap in purpose for me. The S90V PM3LW Sprint was only for sale in US and I imported it (pricey). There were quite a few other sprint runs, but the cost related with importing them to Europe makes it a tough pill to swallow. Let's see whether LC200N (or maybe even MagnaCut, who knows) will make it into a regular Para3LW model. That would be cool indeed. Funny you mention Native 5 LW - I had one briefly in my hand - an interesting formfactor for a compact utility knife, but the handle just felt too boxy. I wish it would be finished similarly to Para 3 LW.
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 2 жыл бұрын
I think your PM2 looks great with the regrind you did on it. And now it does look like a knife you want to actually work with. The Sage Salt is very uncomfortable for me. I have an old Sage 3 or 4 with 440V steel. Shape is similar but the whole handle is rounded off more nicely. I like sprint runs...but, as you said, by the time it gets to Europe....the price is a bit too high. I am curious what you will do with the Pacific Salt. I have one with a plain edge. I like that one. I was never a fan of serrations. I hope to see you test it and what your hear your thoughts on it

@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 2 жыл бұрын
For comfort in hand, yes...the bigger handle of the PM2 is much better. I'd like to maybe try some micarta handle scales on the PM2...maybe round off the corners. I think that would make it much better. Yes, the Para3LW is a bit small if you have to do lots of work with it. A thinned out grind might help out a lot reducing the force you have to put in each cut and how hard you have to squeeze the knife in hand

There were a lot of arguments for the light weight version. But the steel is not my favorite steel. The edge retention is less than Victorinox.
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 2 жыл бұрын
That was the main reason why it's previous owner sold it. I sharpened it and kept it as an edc for a few weeks. Maybe it was because I don't really need a knife daily so the main things I cut were wood and cardboard but I could keep it sharp just by stropping it. TBH I think that if you sharpen it a few times, maybe play around with lower edge angles, it starts improving. But then again I also have to admit that for me softer steels, while not being favorites, have a place in my edc. I sometimes take a knife with a softer steel and a low edge angle and carry it specifically when I know I will have to do a lot of cutting. Then I can also carry a small simple sharpening stone and see how quick I get it back to how sharp i need it for the job.

Still, in this price range off centered blades shouldn't be a thing. Ganzo/Firebird knives are most often perfectly centered for the fraction of the price. No offense, but this is one of the reasons why "made in USA" doesn't mean much outside the US.
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 2 жыл бұрын
Oh..none taken! Even more than that: I agree with you 100%! I look at Ganzos and their blade centering, the smooth action, without side-to-side bladeplay and think: why can't big companies do this for their 100$ knives? For me, blade centering is not important at all! As I said in the video: as long as the blade does not touch the scales.....it's ok for me. Not to say that when we are talking 50$ and up you should pretty much receive a knife with good action, good blade centering, no bladeplay, symmetrical grinds.. This is one point i keep bringing up in my videos. If Ganzo can, for 15-25 $....then Spyderco/Benchmade/ CS...and all the others should too
