The Spyderco Spydiechef is a great little knife. It's well-designed, well-constructed, and uses great materials, and aside from some relatively small issues and the overall "weird", it's an absolute solid gem, and it's the best rust-resistant knife ever. Also, LC200N steel? Good to go.

Great review Nick. Good to hear your thoughts on this blade steel, it's completely new for us too. I'd be interested to hear more when you reference that it was strange when it comes to building a burr. I suppose the late lockup could be a contributor to the lock stick. Nick, you've done it again. Here I was dreaming of the Advocate but after seeing a # of online reviews complaining about thin washers and the use of bearings I thought I'd just wait for "Advocate II" and pass on a new knife for now -- then you've got to roll this out! BTW, I've seen prices on the Advocate of ~228 so I figured these two are in the same ballpark price-wise.

This was a grail knife for me for a long time, and I finally got one recently (the CQI version). Lockup on mine is about 50%, pretty perfect. Also, the lanyard tube on mine doesn't rattle at all, but my knife did come with the mentioned lock-stick (went away after about a month of carry). I really like this knife, but I do have 2 nitpicks; For ME personally, it's a bit painful to one hand close this knife because the tang of the blade is sharp, and it rubs my finger on it's way closed (again, only when I one-hand close it). Second, I agree about the hole placement, and I also find it to be a bit small. Overall, I think this knife is quite beautiful, and it's definitely one of my favorite carry knives. As a side note, I would LOVE to find some blue accent hardware for this.

Actually the lanyard tube rattling issue also haunts some of the K2s. It made me nuts for weeks, and mysteriously went away after my 4th disassembly and reassembly. Has seen some similar experiences posted on forums, some people just simply remove the tube to get rid of the sound.

Hey Nick! Enjoy your reviews. This is my favorite knife among my admittedly small collection. I purchased the Knivesplus custom one using funds that I obtained from participating in a clinical trial. Using money from helping with covid research to buy a knife seems so...inappropriate, but hey. Some interesting things in my knife. One, the spydieflick action is absolutely beautiful and easy. Way easier than my pm2. Two the blade is nowhere near the edge of the scale on mine when the knife is closed. Did they fix this recently? Three, the lanyard tube is completely quiet. I think all the hardware is custom, so maybe that's it. Four, there is no lock stick, none. And lastly, of course the custom scales eliminate the wear issue on the regular titanium scales. I can send you a pic of you want. Thanks!

I'm glad my Spydiechef only had the lock stick for around 20 openings - after that, it didn't stick at all, yet still had around a 50-60% lockup. It certainly didn't stick the way the Nirvana I handled at the store did, nor even as badly as the two Rubicons seemed to despite being a liner lock. About the only complaint that I have is that it could have used some more chamfering or contouring at the edges of the handles. I love what that does for the Native (fluted Ti and 40th Anniversary editions) handle, and it might have made it more perfect to handle... just like the Slysz Bowie.
@HaesslichG
@HaesslichG 7 жыл бұрын
Funny thing after another few days of ownership is that I'm now having to be more careful disengaging the lock as it's now smooth enough to start falling shut as soon as I push the lock bar enough to let it ride the detent ramp. It'll even do so when held parallel to the ground, which is something I usually only get with a well tuned Axis lock knife or something on bearings.

I’ve never understood this knife. At least for edc (which is what a pocket knife is mostly for) All of its advantages, which are great, are mostly outdoor cooking tasks in which a good fixed blade is not only far better, but also more versatile in performing many other tasks. For edc tasks, there are far better choices. For outdoor, survival tasks, fixed blades are far better choices (get a set of kitchen knives if you’re using this for everyday food prep!). For perhaps specific job or recreational related uses like fishing, fine.

Lc200n is a nitrogen steel thats identical to Z-finit. Its medium carbide(nitrate in this case) steel which results in fine grain structure and very keen edge (with proper heat treat), easy sharpenability and high edge stability. It's not going to compare to s30v in wear resistance but this(or steel like it, AEB-L) should have been used in the Nilakka since s30v has relatively low edge stability due to high carbide content. Im excited about Spyderco using this steel and a 52100 military sprint. I like my super steel but medium carbide steels with good heat treatment can be great especially if ground thin. I see a lc200n or aeb-l para 2 and im buying 2 or 3.

Kyle Vanwinkle I'm coming to pocket knifes from the kitchen knife world - a collection I started working in kitchens in college. In this community, aside from the art and function of the knives themselves, I love the emphasis on steels and techniques for shapening. It has definitely benefited my kitchen knives, but when it comes to food prep, my pocket knife gets to open the bag of pasta but not cut up the onions.

Lol to me a blade is a blade. My opinel does food preparation a lot sometime my delica or endura, but mostly my knives are used at work where cutting rope and plastic bands are common. A good blade steel can cut rope 10-15 times before needing a touch up. A good blade steel for me has to hold up and not chip are roll when cutting plastic bands or the occasional zip tie. And Lord help me if I have to cut fiberglass blanket or a synthetic rigging strap. Those two ruin blades idc what steel it is its like cutting glass and dirt respectively. Really lock strength and blade geometry are the most important to me. Full flat grinds, thin saber grinds cut well and axis locks and lockbacks are preferable or a beefy liner lick with a touch of late lockup

I think the attraction is that a lot of us knife guys carry these tactical folders all the time and rarely use them. Or use them far less than we'd like, just because everyday life doesn't demand it. Here, then, is an opportunity to use our fabulous folders a lot more. I agree 100% that even a cheap chef's knife is better than this guy, which costs much, much more. I'm partial to my Victorinox 10" chef's knife. Molded-on handle, not full tang construction. I have a fancy Henckels full tang santoku knife that cost a lot more, is harder to sharpen, and doesn't seem to hold an edge better. When my Spydiechef arrives, you can bet your bottom dollar I'm going to use it for cooking, even though my better-for-cooking knives are close at hand and better for the job. Kind of like how a fan of multi-tools or Swiss army knives will opt to use his MT just for a thrill, even if the purpose-built tool is close at hand. ;) In other words, it's a (folding) knife nerd thing. ;)

What with all the creative locking styles that keep the fingers out of the blade's path, I feel I've become spoiled, maybe even snobby. The only issue that I think I have with the Spydiechef (who am I kidding? I'm gonna buy it anyway) is that framelock. Really would've wished for a compression lock. That's my only gripe, otherwise i would've bought this three times over already. Somebody convince me (right now!) because I think I want to buy this.

Good time to get one... CQI update has a ceramic ball detent... that was the only thing that would "rust" after serious exposure in previous models.

Mine ended up with chips on the edge. I babied it so I have no idea how it happened. I just noticed it’s one day. Did you run into this or have any ideas? I got it at KCI so I know its real, I am just really confused. Heck, I haven’t even cut much of anything with it.

I know this is a little late but, sometimes you need to sharpen a factory edge a few times to get rid of the heat affected zone from the factory grind.

Odd, they went to the trouble of putting a potential slot for the pocket clip on the left for southpaws, but there is nearly no access to the Spyderhole via the left side. An odd, perhaps Polish contrast. I don't get it.

@@stoneblue1795 I'm a lefty too and spydieflicking mine open with my middle or index finger is easy and smooth as glass. My right hand friends get pissed off because the lock bar covers most of the spydiehole on the right hand side making it very hard to flick open for righties

I picked up the CQI version with the black hardware. Lanyard tube rattle is still there. Late lockup is still there. Blade nub still there. For whatever reason the pocket clip is still gray with all black hardware and the price is up quite a lot compare to earlier versions. I still like it though

I know this upload is 4 years old.. BUT I NEED YOUR HELP! Im think about purchasing this knife, and the only thing holding me back is the fact that there is no steel lock bar insert. Should I be worried at all about the longevity of solid lock up?

I wanted to like this knife along with the Bowie except for one big problem I have with it. I'm left-handed and even though it is able to be carried in the left pocket there's no way I left handed person is going to be able to open that knife comfortably. All I'm saying is a left-handed version of it

I cook on a daily basis in several different kitchens. I was looking for a good portable chefs knife to ensure I always get to use a knife that is both sharp and familiar to me. Sadly this aint it. I'm sure it works "ok" but its got utility and EDC stamped all over it Read and envision this: - The blade should be shaped as that of a Tenacious (and whatever other knife using this shape). It should be thinned down to that of a regular chefs knife edge to spine. The blade needs to be shaped in such a way that it allows the full lenght to be sharpened on water stones. i.e no thick, jimped portion at the base of the blade - Frame lock for sanitary reasons. - The knife can be larger than most knives as long as its blanaced. You wont carry a chefs knife in your pocket for quick access anyway since its unsanitary - The pivot point needs to be raised to allow full use of the blade and as a result the handle will be very swayed. But thats ok since you usually hold a chefs knife with the blade between your thumb and index finger. - The knife should come with a torx tool attached to the knife that allows field dissasembly for cleaning.

Good points. However, being 100% sanitary only really matters if you're a pro. (which it sounds like you are) I've been using pocket knives to cut food for decades and never got sick from it. I even use 3-in-1 oil instead of food-safe oil. I don't wash it with soap every time; maybe annually. Sometimes, I just lick it off, wipe it on my pants, and back in the pocket she goes. Living dangerously. ^_^
