As some context to the unaware; when A New Hope had finished principal photography, the film was to be edited by John Jympson. Only really the actual spaceshots with the models had yet to be filmed by this stage so primary editing could be done and the remaining footage added in seamlessly. However, Lucas hated it and ordered rewrites but Jympson refused and was fired to be replaced by Lucas' then wife Marcia Lucas who created the version we all know. What exactly caused the issue is unclear since most of the cut is lost media; buried in the Lucasfilm archives but Lucas says Jympson made it far too slow paced when he wanted a bombastic action movie. A New Hope was after all only supposed to be a standalone movie with maybe a spin-off story or two if Lucas felt like it. ANH couldn't be a slow burner for the rest of the franchise. Some footage is available however like a shot of Vader talking to an officer in the Holiday Special which was confirmed to be from the lost cut. Most of the cut footage however seems to be just very slightly differently shot scenes and different line reads of existing scenes like Luke getting his lightsaber or the “better them than me” from Han.

I'm just looking forward to when Linkara reviews the Dark Empire comics (perhaps more than his eventual reviews of the the Thrawn Trilogy's comic adaptation). Considering how much he loved Rise of Skywalker, I think he's gonna reaaaaaally enjoy it. Bonus? It was written by the same guy who did Bearded Idiot at Earth's End.

Valorum was truly ahead of his time. Good on him for showing the galaxy that you don't have to have life-threatening injuries to wear a cool mask!

Ya know I remember reading the last script Lucas made for Star Wars and reading it, it’s mostly the same film… except everyone praises Anakin for creating the rebellion and how Vader killed him and Anakin’s last words were to Obi-Wan to protect Luke. Awkward.

Oddly, Sith honor actually is a thing in Star Wars... its just not super common. Sith are varied in personality and motivations.

I can't believe The Star Wars already included the Jedi-Sith team-up we wouldn't get in the movies until Episode 8. Sometimes you have to be behind the times to be ahead of the times.

Valorum taking his mask off seems almost to read like symbolism for his face turn, which... hm. More things that get echoed into later drafts.

Can't imagine that punched Stormtrooper not having his own story. There's actually a story behind the Stormtrooper who said, "Looks sir, Droids," in the first movie. He was a former AT-AT pilot who noticed the flaw in their design (the whole tripping with tow cables thing), and his "reward" for pointing it out was being demoted to Stormtrooper, because it's political suicide to point out your organization spent billions of credits designing ships with faulty designs. Much better for your career to just punish the naysayer.

So actually, yes, Luke couldn't see out of the helmet because it was the wrong size, but also, that line wasn't in the script: Mark Hamill said "I can't see a thing in this helmet" because he didn't know the cameras were rolling. That aside, yes, you're absolutely right. Hell, you can kinda notice that Luke's armor didn't really fit him; it's why Leia snarked that he was "a little short for a Stormtrooper."

And so we come to the end of another comic, this one being the ultimate Star Wars Infinities tale based on Lucas’s initial draft. It’s an interesting experiment to see if Dark Horse can pull off an adaptation of an earlier version of Star Wars: A New Hope that needed to be fleshed out. Sadly, this would turn out to be one of Dark Horse’s last Star Wars titles before Marvel would start producing comics set in the Disney canon. Still I wonder if Marvel has ever considered doing that sequel to The Star Wars. Anyhow, I’ll be waiting for that compilation for The Star Wars soon.

Funnily enough, on the topic of Stormtrooper helmets being hard to see out of, Captain Rex also complained about it when disguised as one in Rebels, missing just about every shot he fired while wearing it. I've always believed the Empire made the Stormtrooper armor cheap, as they've always been cheap. No safety handlebars on their ships, how they were originally going to but X-Wings before someone else came in with a cheaper starfighter instead and allowing the Rebellion to have the X-Wings, and even how Thrawn had a TIE Defender program in Rebels that would have made the Empire a threat, but they were so expensive he had to try to lobby for them over the Death Star. The Empire wastes so much money on not one, but two Death Stars, that they save money elsewhere to do it.

To be honest, I do like the idea of Valorum switching sides and joining the Rebellion... but still following the ways of the Sith. It's an interesting idea that I don't think has really been done before in the franchise (although I could be wrong). It opens up potential conflicts between him and the Jedi, and could showcase what makes the Sith ways appealing beyond the need for power and control.

Wow, between US-1, The Star Wars, and now Godzilla Kingdom Of Monsters, this has truly become the month of Linkara finishing old stories.

Valorum's face turn is fairly inexplicable, right up until I remembered that it's basically an explicit plot beat from A Hidden Fortress, the movie Lucas was cribbing liberally from.

I kinda want a sequel to this story. To see how this alternate reality would unfold without a movie script to go on. What would Yoda be in this world? Just saying there’s some potential there.

I remember reading The Star Wars myself a number of years ago, and I actually enjoyed it overall... unless the last two issues. All of a sudden the plot went into overdrive to get to a finale, and it was just such a sharp change in pacing. I still think it's worth reading for those curious, but Linkara more or less nailed its flaws perfectly.
