It's been a little over a year since we flew to Barcelona, Spain to ride the Stark Varg for the first time. Since then, the crew at Stark Future has been busy fulfilling orders and further developing the already impressive platform. We recently got the opportunity to spend another day on the Varg, this time in the states and at a track we visit frequently. Going into the day at Fox Raceway, the four of us differed in opinion's on the Varg and only one of us had experience on the bike. Though, it didn't take long for us to come to agreement on the bike's functionality. Press play to hear our thoughts!

I was one of those guys who thought electric bikes were lame without ever even riding one. I own an Alta MXR, and it is the best motorcycle I have ever owned. So much fun to ride, virtually no maintenance, nothing but fun. I am sure the Stark is even better

I like this bike. My Son is 20 and wants to race moto, he has a 250f but something like this he could practice his starts, turns, and jumps in the backyard at my bicycle shop. Without people complaining about the noise. He can practice more without having to drive 2hours away to a track for his short takeoff in a small turn to jump plus a 50yard start. Plus there could be more tracks closer to homes without the motor noise. People may complain about the announcers mic 🎤 being to loud. I don’t have a dirt bike anymore because I sold it to buy my Sons bike. But still love the power and sold a motorcycle makes ever sense my first motocross race in Xscape country, California, raced minis and was lucky enough to be parked next to JWx3 and his dad helped me get my bike started, plus he encouraged me to want to design things from watching him help Jeff keep his hands dry while he’s racing bikes with milk cartons on the handlebars to block the mud. There will be kids like I was and Jeff that will make a Legacy in Motocross without a motor. I was never close to being a Ward, or the Legacy he made for moto, but was blessed to meet his dad that helped my mind to make bicycle parts years later. By the way he made something work great.

The noise is a huge plus. It not only would be great for being close to town, i would take it through town if I had one. The lack of noise would keep cops from immediate interest in what I'm riding, so it would likely sneak right by then without them knowing. As long as you don't gas the hell out of it and make it known that it's a full on race dirt bike, you should be good. Not to mention ditching the popo if they do give chase would be a lot easier since they can't follow the sound. I could take the backroads to the next town if I wanted. Also I couldn't help but take it on the back track in town a few times. To hell if I mess the track up. They shifted some family who build the track so it's all good. Would be like a legit supercross/arena Rosa track

Donn you said exactly what I’ve been saying. I will be riding gas motorcycles for the rest of my life, the stark I have on order will just be a nice addition to my fleet of 20 plus gas motorcycles. I love everything with handlebars and wheels regardless and my Stark will just be another way for me to have fun on dirt bikes. I also think it’s going to be sweet when I want to ride near my house but be quiet and stealthy. So many positives to this motorcycle and how it will compliment my gas bikes. I ordered one because I want one, if you hate electric and don’t want one, don’t buy one it’s that simple.

There's a fair amount of badass electric cars also. I've had my share of big turbo cars and since going electric i can't stand how laggy and lethargic they are before they downshift and spool up. Plaids are down well into the 70s on the used market now...for a 1000hp car with a 120k mile warranty and dirt cheap to run. Tough to beat it.

Got my Stark Varg 4 days ago. I love this bike more than any bike i've had. Meanwhile it scares me alot. The instant torque is extreme. It can kick you up to huge speeds on the road in just a sec or it can destroy a trail completly with just a twist on the throttle. I love this machine.

Here's why I'm ordering one. I can build a supercross track in my backyard and my neighbors won't say shit. My 450, even with stock exhaust, is so loud I can hear it echoing off the hillside. Even my brand new yz250 2 stroke is too loud. So it totally opens up that element of bringing the sport INTO town ya know? So that also cuts down emissions in that we won't have to drive our souped up yamahaulers 2 hours just to pound some laps. I don't know if you guys make your track trucks fast but I do, I'm and automotive fabricator. I own a little singlecab Toyota with a build Honda K24 and a big ass turbo, camburg front suspension, 35 inch tires the thing is a little monster it makes almost 400 hp.

I think one massive benefit that doesn't get talked about enough is fewer injuries, lots of riders get injured from false neutral, bad shift, mechanical, out of gas, and yeah all of these things can still happen, but these are far more simple mechanically and the technology should add a level of software intelligence that can check if things are wrong before they go wrong I do like mechanical systems and engines but this just seems more practical minimal maintenance safer minimal noise (less likely to be banned, can talk to friends while trail riding) and bike predictability since you don't have the rotating mass of an engine beneath you

@waynegarfield6607 9 ай бұрын
It's too early to tell how safer they may or may not be. With 80 quick hp on tap you know people are gonna test it out regardless if they have the skills to control. A KX 500 is not a bike for the faint but the electric could be more of a handful if whiskied at the wrong moment especially if tired. That's what is good about the clutch....a power modulator and quick disconnect. The electric is locked in . Their may be built in programming and method to change delivery altho I only heard them say power modes and engine braking or deceleration braking but not acceleration control or disconnect without key or hitting buttons. Not something you could do in a over jump scenenirio when flat landing bottoming and grabbing a handful of WFO upon landing hard by accident . To the bleachers and beyond!!!

@@matthewottman5329 you've never seen a rider in supercross hit false neutral and endo? I've seen Stewart do it often enough. I personally had a my bike run out of gas mid air, it's not common but it did happen. there's a video I saw of a rider whose throttle got stuck going off a jump in outdoors, broken back I think. Again, uncommonly, modern 4 strokes are quite reliable, but plenty of mechanical failures happen some years more than others, and all of take is for a wheel to seize up at the wrong time.

FYI - I've been told there already several aftermarket companies working on sound system addons to emulate the engine sound of a real bike:). You supposedly will be able to select from a variety of 2 strokes and 4 strokes or even be able to load your own custom audio (that could be annoying). I remember watching a TV show where Dee Snider had a custom car shop do this to his Tesla, LOL. My guess is there will be some sort of speaker pointing forward that will help other riders hear you from behind. Probably would improve safety at least on the local tracks where there's a variety of bikes. The future is bright indeed.

Unfortunately our sport has always been resistant to change and that’s why we lag behind so much. It’s sad that so many people directly tie it to politics, global warming, gender, generators, and a plethora of other totally irrelevant immature items. The focus should that it’s an addition to the sport and not a replacement. It’s a huge growth area and expansion area for the sport. There are plenty of riders in the sport today because of e bikes that wouldn’t have been without them. Do you have to buy one? No. Are they for every application and person? No. But, if you don’t support them in general you are truly not worried about growing and expanding the sport. Period!

Built my son an electric XR100 (it was an old 2002 but new paint/plastic and made it a Tomac replica so it looks like a Yamaha now...) and it's a blast. If I was riding one seriously, I'd move rear brake to left grip and will prob do that for his bike. Lots of cool upgrades I have in mind as well since my background is software (prob do a custom screen, builtin video of his rides, some cool LED lighting integration for different stuff). But, just the ease of riding, very nimble, low CoG, lower weight make it's a ton a of fun. And zero maintenance... He can easily get over an hour more like 1.5hrs of good ride time too. Was a labor love to build for him and worth every minute bc he loves it and bc he's a Tomac SUPERFAN, so that makes it even better... I'd love to ride a Varg one day but I'm def going to build my own when I get the time prob based on a YZ or WR250... Was awesome to do

@@nevesdanger I see it totally differently…seems like besides battery technology not quite being ideal yet, it does everything better than gas. We have to have whole extra parts of an engine (transmission and clutch) just to adapt the relatively small rpm range of a gas engine to a motorcycle application. With that comes the need to shift and a clutch lever which necessitates the rear brake to be foot operated, all of which is less than ideal. Add that gas bikes stall, make noise, get hot, etc.. Just because it’s the first pass at providing locomotion to a motorcycle doesn’t mean it’s the best method ever. I think these bikes will start showing up at tracks and trails and will start dominating and they will start gaining market share just like 4 strokes did. Gas bikes aren’t going away anytime soon (and electric for sure won’t be my only bike) but from a pure performance perspective, I think this is the future.

@@motorboatinSOBand I think the battery is about 80% of the cost, just like it’s about 80% of the weight. If money wasn’t an object, I could see having a 2nd battery charging back at the box van. But it’s not something your Dad or mechanic would have six or in his back pocket on the start gate. Not yet, anyway….

@@EricCogburn I have ridden a live-wire, which was an exciting ride. Fastest 2 wheel machine that I have ridden, probably faster than anything most people have ridden. Unless you have ridden a H2. I don’t doubt that the Stark isn’t an amazing experience. Sounds like it makes some “rider skill” less important which is mehhh. When I can ride equivalent to 80-100 miles trail riding using lots of throttle then I will be interested. And for my adventure bike I will need at least 250 miles of real riding range.

It’s important for these guys to get used to electric everything living in the state they live in. I ride track, but I ride a TON of hard enduro and I don’t think an electric bike is going to work well in that setting because you use your clutch constantly and also pulling massive rocky hillclimbs, dropping down through a draw and climbing another all day, the battery is going to be dead in the first hour or so. I’d like to ride one though.

They already ran E bikes at the TKO Hard Enduro which is the hardest enduro event in the US. I talked to multiple riders there and they don’t even worry about it. Now the range issue is a different topic.

I would compare the Stark to the original YZ400/426 (1997ish-2000ish don't quote me on the year). The Stark shows a lot of promise but has not had all the bugs worked out/proven race machine similar to the ancient YZ400/426. Back then we had our "I'll never Moto a four stroke" and the "4 stroke is a passing phase people" (myself included) and they are similar to the "Never Electric" people of today. But once the 4 stroke became a viable race machine and started winning and then started dominating many minds were changed. The same "never a 4 stroke" people started buying the 4 strokes and manufacturers quit making the 2 strokes because they weren't selling (minus KTM group/YAM/little bikes. I see this taking a bit longer because of the range of the battery but once a top level guy starts winning and dominating it won't be long till the masses all climb aboard the electric bike train.

I think the holeshots in supercross is what is gunna fuel the change to electric if it does take over. Having no gears would probably give an edge at the gate drop when it comes to getting to the first turn. Any little advantage can make a huge difference at the top level. When it does enter MX/SX, hopefully they make it its own class or regulate them out of taking over completely. Or add a separate class for 2 strokes so they can finally return. Would you imagine an all electric and all 2 stroke supercross or national? Would be awesome just because if the sheer contrast of engine types.

I feel like you really glossed over the battery life issue which is really the main concern most people have. From what I can gather you each rode about 3 laps and loved the bike, but are saying there wasn't enough battery life? After 3 laps? You should really post a follow up as to how long you were able to actually ride between charges and if you lost power or had to change the way you rode due to battery capacity. You compare to electric R/C cars, but what has happened with ebuggy's is that we went from one 30-45min main event with pit stops, to having to have 3 seperate 10min main events. If electric MX becomes the new premier class, I expect we'll see the same thing, more Triple Crown type formats with 10min mains and the pros will either have to swap battery or have 3 bikes ready to go.

@@se11459 , that’s exactly what I did. I have two Alta’s for less than the price of a varg. I’ve been enjoying the Alta’s while lots of others are painfully waiting on their varg. No one rides a Varg at 80 hp , most ride them around 40hp. The Alta certainly has more hp than is useable on an Mx or in an enduro setting as well. So two Alta’s work well for me and are flawless in their build quality. I also have two KTM freeride e’s . I hope everyone gets their Vargs soon but if history is any indication it might be a very long time.

"irrational hatred" - Chill out. There are valid reasons why individuals may prefer one bike over another. Many people don't like the current 4 stroked. 2 strokes preferred. Due to resource and production scaling issues in the future, battery driven machinery become very expensive, thus driving many out of the sport. That said, there may be lofty challenges for combustion engines too.

@@kurtheidelbach "fake fans" - muh narrative drive. What an asshole! Some people prefer two strokes over four strokes. Those who prefer to watch or tide two strokes are not "fake fans" for not wanting watch four strokes race. People can be fans of particular machinery. Some people are questioning whether limiting tire choices would benefit sx and mx. If jump sizes get halved and whoops get abolished by "do-gooder" mommies in 2025, yes...some people may not watch any longer. People may prefer a particular era of racing.
