Thales Starstreak, also known as the Starstreak High Velocity Missile, is a British short-range man-portable air-defence system. With a claimed range of more than 7 km, Starstreak is a laser-guided precision weapon that has low collateral damage. It is also reportedly the fastest short-range surface-to-air system in the world, with a peak velocity above Mach 3. The 14 kg missile makes it a flexible weapon that can be launched from light land, sea, and air platforms. Starstreak has been in service with the British Army since 1997. The StarStreak High Velocity Missile was designed to provide close air defense against conventional air threats such as fixed-wing fighters and late unmasking helicopter targets. There are many variants of the system such as Air to Air starstreak that can be fired from a helicopter, Lightweight multiople launcher strarstreak that can be mounted on a light vehicle, Sea streak that be mounted on a naval vessel, sel-propelled that can be carried in an armoured fighting vehicle and the Starstreak mark II which is the upgrade of the starstreak.

In theory, it's possible, but the laser used by Starstreak is less powerful than the laser used by semi-active laser guidance. With semi-active laser guidance, the laser points at the target and the missile or bomb homes in on the reflected laser light. This requires a somewhat powerful laser so the missile/bomb can see the "laser dot" on the target. Starstreak uses beam riding guidance. The dart's sensor points rearward rather than forward, so it tries to "ride" the beam. Now you might be wondering ... how does this even work? If the dart drifts from the beam, how does it know which direction to go, to get back to the beam? Well, if the beam just pointed straight at the target, it wouldn't. But in fact, the beam is spread a bit into a cone, and it also rotates its aim in a tight circle around the target. If the dart is directly centered inside this circle, it sees a steady signal. If it's not, it sees a "bumpy" signal, and the timing of the bumps tells it which direction to go. The bottom line is that the laser doesn't need to be as bright, because it's directly shining on the sensor, and the laser is also spread out compared to the target, because of the way the guidance system works. A laser sensor on the target could still sense the laser, but it would be more difficult to detect than with (more common) semi-active laser homing.

Flares are no good because it doesn't use IR. Chaff has little effect on the laser painting and anyway the missile has predictive targeting.

@ed 2510 Sure, here are the specifications for the surface-to-air missiles form wikipedia StarStreak II - range of 4.3 miles altitude up to 16,000ft speed mach 3.5 (some sources state mach 4) man-portable launcher 3 simultaneous warheads immunity to countermeasures Stinger - range of 3 miles altitude up to 12,000ft speed mach 2.5 man-portable launcher resistance to countermeasures Javelin has longer range but is a lot more expensive than NLAW, but NLAW is single use only. All the weapon systems are great for different purposes, but I'm no expert.

Helicopters are the easy target not only about Russians but also any helicopter in the world. How many UH-60, CH-47 was shot down by RPG-7? Secondly, It is not portable and heavier than compare to Igla. Sosna-R which has greater range and altitude up to 10 km is comparable with it Starstreak.

I actually did not hear anything positive about this system when it was used against the soviets in Afghanistan. Sure the more modern versions are lot better, however manual guiding using kinetic darts is very hard. Also it is not as portable eg stinger. So that assumption that Russian pilots fear it the most is misleading.

When you say it was based on another system....what was the name of that earlier system? And the Javelin wasnt produced until 96...so that certainly wasnt used against soviets in afghan. Oh and the stinger is heavier than the starstreak...sooo.....im not sure why you think its less portable than the stinger.
