A whimsical & ironical look at how the 'landed gentry' were often impoversished & unable to upkeep their lavish estates. Cripling inheritance tax & their sources of income either becoming outdated, or illegal (like the slave trade, all made such properties untenable. Released in 1938, how was Coward able to put the the line: "The lavatory makes you fear the worst" on record? Simple, the true definition is a washing place, but you have to admire his cheek! Played on my HMV 104, their smallest table top gramophone.

Also worth looking for: Don't Put Your Daughter On The Stage Mrs Worthington, Mad Dogs & Englishmen, Please Don't Be Beastly To The Germans & There Are Bad Times Just Around The Corner. Hull gets a mention in that one!

Indeed they have. So much of their wealth was gained by exploitation, so things had to change. Many of them are open to the public now, which helps upkeep their stunning architecture, priceless works of art & gorgeous furniture.

As for Noel Coward I find: Mad Dogs & Englishmen, Don't Put Your Daughter On The Stage Mrs Worthington, There Are Bad Times Just Around The Corner & Please Don't Be Beastly To The Germans most memorable. Will look out for Billy Cotton.

@@tiga4180 I've two versions of Mad Dogs. One is a 1950s in concert, the other may be the original. That Mairzy Doats CD gives no track data, not even run times.
