Had the privilege of going on tour with the Statesman back in the '60s became very fond of Big Chief and found that he was probably the best narrator and singer of all the bass singers that I was around he had an ability that I don't believe can be matched by any of the bass singers in gospel music today

I have this album, and I have worn out two of them, and a cassette that I had transcribed the record to. Thank God for KZfaq, I now listen to it, wherever I go, in my truck, via bluetooth. I wish he had included the 1st song, "Jesus, Hold My Hand" with this.

Many years ago (early 1960s) I used to go see The Statesmen Quartet and The Blackwood Brothers Quartet at the Will Rogers Auditorium in Ft. Worth, TX. I think they were there with a third group once every 2 months. And there's still no music in this world that I enjoy more.

This is by far my most favorite of their albums. It’s a shame that it gets forgotten and overlooked on all streaming services. Thanks for posting! I have the album but I don’t have a record player anymore.

Great singing. I happen to have this album. I found it at an estate sale for probably around $1.00 several years ago. One of the things that really upsets me is that in 99% of the time these record companies would not put the dates on these records when they came out. I never understood that. Thanks for the post.

I inherited this album from my grandmother. I love listening to it on my old, cabinet style stereo. Now i can listen to it anywhere! 🙂

This album was the first I ever heard of the Statesmen and Southern Gospel Music. It was played for me by a student at Houghton College who wanted to demonstrate his new stereo system. This was one of the great spiritual experiences of my life! I wanted to know where he got the album and how I could get it. He said he didn't know as he had to write to the RCA Victor company to order it! I was off and running with Southern Gospel Music from that point on!

The Big Chief had a better blend of tone quality, control and voice strength than any bass I have ever heard. I heard the Statesmen in a live concert in Montgomery, Alabama around 1952 or 1953. A few years later I saw them at a truck stop restaurant in Tuskegee, Alabama. They were on their way to New Orleans.
