The story of Disney in the early 2000's (the “post Disney renaissance era”) a time that saw the release of three consecutive sci-fi animated features: Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Lilo and Stitch, and Treasure Planet. Unlike renaissance movies like The Lion King, Mulan, and Aladdin, the films of the post-renaissance were not universally loved. Many of the movies from this era (including Dinosaur and The Emperor's New Groove) are now considered underrated and are seen as being amongst Disney's hidden gems.
In this video I answer the question “what happened after the Disney Renaissance ended?” . This video covers Disney history from 2001 to 2002 in a documentary/video essay style and mainly discusses Disney's downfall after having claimed its place at the top of the entertainment world during the 1990s. It also features the stories of Roy Disney and his beloved Fantasia 2000 as well Disney's infamous CEO, Michael Eisner and his film production strategy while also setting up the eventual war that would erupt between the two. I also provide my own reviews and rankings for Atlantis, Lilo and Stitch, and Treasure Planet.
For reference:
The Disney Renaissance includes: The Little Mermaid (1989), The Rescuers Down Under (1990), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), The Lion King (1994), Pocahontas (1995), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), Hercules (1997), Mulan (1998), and Tarzan (1999).
The "sci-fi years" refers to Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), Lilo and Stitch (2002) , and Treasure Planet (2002).

fantastic attention to detail, explaining a story in a smooth fashion that compliments the complexity that is Disney. I am left with both knowledge of the Disney history and icons, while seeing the creative process from inside out.

The emperor's new groove has a 86% out of 135 critic reviews on rotten tomatoes, it looks to have gotten a largely positive reception. But promotion wasn't high enough and it was so different than the previous renaissance movies. Lilo & Stitch is the last true classic disney movie and yeah most audiences weren't wanting to see Disney do animated action movies

Atlantis and Treasure planet really messed up their marketing and release dates. I feel that if they worked on release dates and marketing, these could have been so much better.

I can see youre point with the negatives about Treasure planet. What makes that movie special for me is its deep and relatable characters. Jim Hawkins for exampel. Rlly relatable for alots of teens like myself. Being abanded by a parent instead of losing them to death is something disney had never done before. Jim never felt like he had a future or that he could do anything right. Disney took a lot of risks making this film. The anination is stunning and its story is just beautiful. And yes it had some weird and annoying characters like B.E.N but Jim, Silver and Doppler are funny and relatable characters. I understand that not alot of people like this movie but it dosent get the love it deserves. Love ur video. Keep going 👍

You make a lot of really good points. It definitely took a lot of risks and broke new ground for Disney and that does make it stand out. I’m really glad you liked the video and I appreciate you taking the time to comment!!

@@PeeledEyes I have a theory that Disney knows how to balance humor and drama in their fairly tale films but not on their slightly more realistic films. The exception to this rule so far is Lilo and Stitch because It's story is very simple. Atlantis is not simple.

I'm a weird one, I consider Emperor's New Groove a Renaissance era movie. Anything post 9/11 I count as post renaissance, it's when the positivism of the 90s ended.

Any eras in particular you'd be interested in? One day I'll definitely make a video about Katzenberg's time at Disney and his defection to DreamWorks.

Yes for sure but I didnt cover it because it was done by Pixar which wasn't owned by Disney at the time, instead they just had a distribution contract. I was mainly trying to focus on the work of the Walt Disney Animation Studio during the start of the new millennium

Great explanation of the Post Disney Renaissance Movies of how the movies were made in the Early 2000’s. I had to be totally honest is that Disney used to be good in the early 2000’s with movies like Dinosaur 2000, Meet the Robinsons, Brother Bear and Atlantis The Lost Empire, honestly, those are the Disney movies that I liked in the Post Disney Renaissance. Great video and hopefully this will cheer me up and hopefully, I’ll be able to like Disney again.
