The Wizard of Oz (directed by Victor Fleming and starring Judy Garland) is one of the most well-recognized pieces of American culture. So much so that it has spawned countless fan theories, myths, and conspiracies. The story of a Kansas girl whisked away (via tornado) to somewhere over the rainbow captured the imaginations of almost all who have seen it. With the help of the scarecrow, the tin man, and the cowardly lion, Dorothy must find her way home while trying to escape the wicked witch. A simple, timeless story that has allowed the minds of movie fans to run wild with theories and stories of behind the scenes Hollywood true crime.
Speculation about the film has always been prevalent; from Dark Side of the Rainbow (the idea that the movie perfectly matches Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon) to the possibility that it's an allegory for feminism or religion, this movie's theories cover it all in an attempt to ruin your childhood. Peeled Eyes explains these theories and offers some insight for why there are so many theories about this film in particular.

The Wizard of Oz will always be my all-time favorite movie. I watched it every year as a child, watched with my children when they were young, and I still watch even today! The original L. Frank Baum novel has only the basic elements of the story in common with the movie. In my view, the movie was much better and more elaborate than the book. That's about the only movie I've ever thought that about, since the original novel is usually superior to a movie version of it.

I think the main reason there are so many theories about *The Wizard of Oz* is simply that so many people have seen it and remember the basic outline of the story and characters that it provides a common frame of reference for discussing almost anything.

Because of the source material. The author of the book, Frank Baum was a theosophist (which is a rabbit hole within itself). The story is essentially an initiation process into full fledged personhood. The unification of the mind and heart gives way to true courage; Dorthy becoming the personification of the goddess.

It's an old movie that was also "for kids" (old movies, glitchy video and liminal spaces can cause a feeling of nostalgia mixed with just "wrongness" ) Stuff that happened behind the scenes ( asbestos snow, makeup made from copper, burn wounds, and other not so great things happened on set. And you know, "iM gOnNa RuIn YoUr ChIlDhOoD" ) And you know lots of other feelings that you know you've fealt but can't seem to put into words.

I think what people miss of the story, is of Dorothy finally coming to terms with her broken childhood and accepting Ems and Henry's as her new HOME. Thus the statements of I'm not ever leaving here again, there's no place like HOME. It is some what distracted from due of Judy being 16 pretending to be 12 to 14 years old. Again somewhat distracted from due of Hunks relationship being on the edge of a romantic relationship. Dots a city kid, whose parents die in a car crash. She's suddenly out in a farmland and getting hit in the head has a twisted memory recall of her city life combined with her new life. It's interesting all the twists and turns her mind experiences but then she is knocked unconscious ( in the MGM version) and nearly dies( Henry's talk of..for a minute there I thought she was going to leave us). She's a kid remembering her previous family life as a kid might. The farm must've seemed very lonely and different for her. Almost no human stimulation like she was use to. What was she still doing wearing high heels anyway on a farm, becoming a farm hand. She must've still been somewhat having a transition problem. Wizard of Oz, MGM.

I agree it was distracting having a 16 year old Judy Garland playing a 12-14 year old.. Honestly reminds me of the fact that Shirley Temple was supposed to play the role when she was a kid.. MGM was supposed to trade Clark Gable and Jean Harlow to the company Shirley worked for in order for Shirley to go to MGM to play Dorothy which had actually been Shirley's dream role.. But unfortunately Jean Harlow passed away before the trade happened and the company Shirley worked for pulled out of the deal cause they didn't want to trade Shirley for just Clark Gable so the role ultimately went to Judy instead.

@@Kyolover8i dont think shirley temple was actually SUPPOSED to play dorothy, i think it was just an idea. think they knew shirley couldnt sing as well as judy

@@oogabooga2337it was in Shirley's autobiography. The studios were going to let Shirley play Dorothy at MGM if MGM lent them two of their actors in return. But one of the actors that was going to be traded for her died and they backed out of the deal. So Judy was the next choice.

The dumbest theory I ever read was that it was about Queer Theory,I hate it when people take modern identity politics and transfer them into old films, that weren't even thinking about these things.

Those kind of thoughts have been around for centuries. It's just recent times that the media has hyped them up.

I can answer your question without even watching your video, and the answer is that some people just won't avail themselves of the information which can be read in authoritative sources, such as the books "The Making of The Wizard of Oz" (1977) by Aljean Harmetz (for which she interviewed forty-eight people who worked on the movie, actors and crew alike), "The Wizard of Oz: The Official 50th Anniversary Pictorial History" (1989) by John Fricke, Jay Scarfone, and William Stillman, and "The Road to Oz: The Evolution, Creation, and Legacy of a Motion Picture Masterpiece" (2019) by Scarfone and Stillman.

I think it is unnecessary to over-analyze this. The Wizard of Oz has been a staple of film viewing for 75 years, at least since it was an annual event on network television; and of course the novel has been around for 120+ years. Every baby-boomer and Gen X-er could almost literally recite the entire script by heart, and more recent generations have seen it at least once (it astonishes me when someone posts a supposed first-viewing reaction on KZfaq). Furthermore, because of its remarkable production history, it is almost certainly one of the best-documented films ever made, in every aspect of its production _and_ its effects on pop culture. Seriously, if there's anything you want to know about this film, practically down to the names of the people who sequined the ruby slippers, there's a book that can tell you. With that mass of information available, it is easy for spurious claims to take hold easily as urban folklore. It's a small step from Margaret Hamilton's fire accident and drunk Singer Midgets to an on-set suicide; to say nothing of the Rorschach-test interpretive theories like Littlefield's strained "populism" analogies and the Pink Floyd rubbish. You can read pretty much anything you like into almost any film or text ("When correctly viewed, everything is lewd! I can tell you things about Peter Pan, and the Wizard of Oz--there's a dirty old man!" -- Tom Lehrer), but an important cultural institution like The Wizard of Oz will get more than its share of allegorical or subtextual interpretations just because it _is_ important.

Why should it be surprising that The Wizard of Oz is as subtext-laden as 2001: A Space Odyssey or Eraserhead? Because it's rated 'G' or something?
