Most of the photo credits in this video go to Shane, Jimmy, and Kyleigh, and some are from our family's old albums.
It's only fitting that I start 2023 off on a good note and give credit where credit is due. This video is dedicated to the memory of my late grandfather who was (and continues to be) my hero, and also to Shane, the collector and restorer (and now a friend of mine) who saved this tractor from an uncertain fate. This is the story of a very special John Deere 520 high-clearance vegetable tractor that my grandfather farmed with, was eventually sold and parted out, neared death at the scrapyard, and then was saved and resurrected into a true work of art. I am so thankful and excited to be able to have this tractor back in the family once again, and to be the caretaker of it as a staple in my personal collection where it will live alongside its former coworkers - the JD 60 and Ford 4000 - once again. It serves as a symbol of my grandfather's legacy, and his influence on the vegetable farming community of southern New Jersey in the 1960's and 70's. I could type out the full story here in the description, but it would defeat the purpose of the video - in my opinion you can't give it justice without seeing the pictures of the restoration process and the documentation I have to go with it. Hope you enjoy - and here's to a great new year!

Your grandfather would be proud to know you brought the 520 back into the family Mike, especially given how it was left for dead. Shane did a bang up job restoring her to her former glory

Thanks Jerry. I really wish he could be here to see it. My long term goal is to find and buy back all of the surviving tractors that my grandfather used to own. I've got 3 so far and I know where 3 more are. But the rest as far as I know were lost to time. I can't say enough good about Shane's efforts in restoring it...I hope to have half his skill some day.

I was driving today and listened to your entire video, so touching. The 520 holds a special place in my heart too. It was my first tractor that was ever mine. 9 years old, my dad (who’s no longer with us) took me to go buy this big ugly green thing with a loader on it. We restored it together and she still works all summer. It may not have a loader anymore but it pulls the hay rake and the tedder all summer long. I’m thankful I’m the 4th generation owner of our family’s (M). My great grandfather bought it brand new in 1950 and ultimately had a heart attach while driving it many years later and passed. Since then the little M has been passed down all the way to me. I still have my dads 4020 Diesel he grew up farming on. As well as many other tractors all with sentimental value and memories. But hearing your story on how this tractor came back to its rightful place touched my heart a little bit today. Shane did a top notch job, she looks beautiful as she deserves to be! Looking forward to seeing the 60 come back to life! I’ll keep a look out for any (50)s set up vegetable style up here in Massachusetts for ya!

Thanks for the nice comments Patrick! Glad you enjoyed the video. That must have been awesome getting a 520 for your first tractor at 9 years old and being able to restore it with your dad. I wish my grandfather was still alive to help me with the restoration and hear the old 60 run again. It's great that you still have the family M and 4020, those are definitely keepers! I am slowly trying to track down all of my family's tractors but it's been quite the challenge since I don't have the serial numbers of several of them. But I've been fortunate to track down 3 others so far...hoping I can buy them all back someday.

@@MichaelTJD60 Thankfully though in the community of old tractors people are usually as helpful as they can be. It’s really a cool thing. Especially us younger guys getting into it and preserving the past, innovations, progress, and power of these machines. Deere definitely knew what they were doing, if only these things could talk. I’m sure the stories they’d tell is incredible!

@@patrickmahoney7965 I've said the same thing for years! I can only imagine what it was like running one of these tractors day in and day out for a living. Especially working for a Case IH dealer and being around all the new farm equipment, the new stuff is on a whole different level (which isn't always a good thing).

Very cool! Are you and the tractor still in New Jersey? I've spent my whole life going to the Jersey Shore on vacation but I never realized how many 2-cylinder tractors were down in that area until just recently. I've made several trips to Cape May the last few weeks while searching for my grandfather's model 50 - so far I've found 3 that were shipped to that area, but none of them are the one I am looking for.

Hi there Michael, that is wonderful you were able to get your Grandads tractor back after all those years, so interesting to hear this history of your Grandad and the John Deere, they sure were a great tractor and still are today, remember as a young boy biking home from school and stopping to watch farmers working the fields with these tractors and the farmall tractors also, I would walk over to the fence and watch, you have a great new year also,

Thank you Jason, I would have loved to have grown up when these tractors were still in their prime and being used on a lot of farms. In New Jersey where I grew up, most of the 2-cylinder tractors have been retired but there are a lot of them still running around on the Amish and Mennonite farms here in PA where I live now.

Wow. That's alot of story details. Hope the JD 60 projects starts off good. The zero motor I had to get rid of it. New fuel filter no go. New sprak plug no go. I didn't like it. It had twin cam in and was a kholer 24hp I think. I did good for the summer. I put on the start and a ram pickup took it and loaded onto the back of the bed. Think he had another helper help him. Oh well. Not a fan of the zero turn motors.

The foot pedal is for the PTO clutch, and yes that design started with the 20 series in late '56.
