Growing up in the 60's, my first dream car was the Batmobile. Then I saw this car, and my entire automotive world changed. To this day, nothing else is quite good enough.

Hey, so proud to now be a part of this car's history! I was the one who designed the version in Ready Player One! Alterations included the tanks being hidden jet engines, reinforced supercharger and front bumper, and several other changes to fit into this new virtual world. It was originally planned as Aech's car for the film which would have featured it MUCH more, but was later changed to the Big Foot monster truck because it was easier to spot in the sea of cars. There was also a more customized version that was scaled bigger, had a more dragster rear end and a sunroof cut out of the roff so the 8' AECH character could drive with his head out the top. But that too was paired back before filming. Still LOVE the original Mad Max as the one with the best story as Max walks into the darkness and comes out as the Black on Black.... epic!

Absolutely fantastic video. I was one of those petrol heads that saw the original in the theater in the US as a 16YO octane junkie. This car grabbed in a way nothing else ever has. Trying to get info on the car before the internet in the US was extremely hard. About all I was able to find out was it was a Australian Falcon. Now seeing as the Mad Max released in the States was devoid of any Aussie accents or lingo we had thought the car was a Ford Torino with a 71-73 Mustang front clip and much custom work to achieve the look . Some has even thought it was a George Barris car. For me this was summer of 1980 as the US saw the release about a year after it open in Oz. So when video tape releases came out I bought it and studied the car frame by frame , dreaming of the day I would somehow find and buy one . Flash forward 20 years to 2000 . A friend at work , also a Mad Max fanatic were talking . I told him of what little I still knew of the car and it spurred him into a web search for info as I was still not in the computer age. The next day he came in with pages he had printed from Peter Barton's Mad max FAQ page. Seeing all the info available I went out and purchased a Web TV internet terminal and began to scrounge everything I could. After reading everything on Peter's page I went through all the links he has posted. One link was that of Mad Max Cars. Thinking it was a info page I was stunned when the page opened with the message " Do You live in the US? Do you want to own a Interceptor?" I was like HELL YES I DO. I read everything on the page and reached out to the owner of the page . I explained what I was looking for in a car and he said well I have a Black 4 speed car ,but it's a XA GT clone, you'd have to replace all the front sheet metal. I was still interested . Now at this point I had very little idea of what a stock XA GT looked like . When Terry transmitted the photos . My plans changed. I no longer wanted to build the Interceptor , but wanted to restore the car back to it's original beauty. So we struck the deal in June of 2000, the car was packed and shipped too me and arrived in late August of 2000. I goy=t the car registered and insured and drove it as is to it's 1st show 3 days later. The crowd that this beaten and slightly tired car drew was surprising to me. I was still parking it as a crowd gathered around it . many wanting to know why was this very American looking car ( most if not all believing it was a Torino) had RHD . Once I explained that this was the stock version of the Mad Max Car they all understood . After that began a nearly 2 year nut and bolt restoration and the car was truly now show worthy in late may of 2002. In 2003 I along with the many Falcon owners in the States pilgrimaged to Dearborn, Michigan in June 2003 for the Ford 100th celebration. We had 26 Aussie falcons there over the course of the weekend . Still to my knowledge the largest gathering of Aussie falcons outside of Oz or NZ . In attendance we had 3 Interceptors and a Big Bopper sedan, XA ,XB coupes and a Cobra , a XW sedan and Ford of Australia sent over a new at the BA XR6 sedan and Ute. So this one car has taken up 40 years of my life and I've never been disappointed in it. Again thanks for the great video and your work is greatly appreciated.

I am a huge pony car fan, but as an Aussie I'm infinitely glad that George Miller went for the Falcon in Mad Max!!! I simply couldn't imagine any other vehicle playing the starring role in this cinematic masterpiece.

The car at 15:46 is my car with Peter Barton. Built for the documentary Back 2 the Max by Scott Smith, it was later partially disassembled and molds made of each custom fiberglass component (all were made from original molds). Several sets of parts were made and sent to the Fury Road vehicle team, making the Fury Road cars all replicas of mine. :D

Thank you for putting this together. I was just old enough to see "The Road Warrior" in the theaters and then saw the original Mad Max on VHS. I loved this car from the moment I saw it on screen. It's a timeless icon of a possible dystopian future that we managed to avoid. Today's youth are largely spared the societal fear that our leaders would engage in a global nuclear war.

One of the greatest cinematic moments in my 49 years on this planet is, "Kick it in the guts Barry". My God if that isn't magnificent the growl and the whine of the supercharger, ending with the last of oxygen being sucked as it shut down. Pure animal.

Freaken excellent video, I was only 11 years old when my parents took us to a Drive-In to see the first Mad Max, I was blown away and instantly hooked on the MFP Interceptor, "Long Live the Night Rider" :)

Those Aussie two door Falcons even looked beautiful when they were rusted wrecks .

Fury road has the most amazing cars I have ever seen in any piece of media in my life, I really enjoyed looking back to where it all started in this video.

I went to see Mad Max in 1979 in the only theater showing it in Nashville. My dad, my brother and I couldn’t decide what kind of car the Pursuit special was. Even when I saw the Road Warrior years later I was still stumped. It was years later that I finally found out it was an Aussie Original

The car that started my career! Saw it as a kid, was hooked immediately! First was models, then cars, 30yrs later I still find myself turning wrenches and giving people the car of their dreams. Who'd of thunk!? The interceptor lives on........

I still remember the first time and exact moment and emotion felt when I saw MadMax in the early '80s. That car made a huge impact on me. Years later I found out the name of the movie and discovered The Road Warrior in the late '80s. The Road Warrior is the very first VHS tape I ever purchased and I wore the God damned tape out I watched it so many times and had to purchase another copy. MadMax has it's own special mystique and remains my favorite motion picture of all time.

Great informative video. I saw the car during many visits to the "Cars of the stars" Museum in England where it was on display. Usually you had to see it standing behind a barrier but one day the museum was almost empty and the staff let me sit in the drivers seat. Very nice.

I owned a SS Camaro in 79' that had a blown Ls-6 427 cubic inch. First for all of you young people and i was 18 in 79', if you ever have a chance to ride in a blown muscle car, DO IT. I was running a 10% under driven, 3- Inch cragar drive and a 6.71 GM blower with Weiand full race manifold , topped off by 2 Holley 600cfm center squirters. What a great memories for the kid i used to be. A blown muscle car is a something to remember when that blower comes up on line, Over Pressure.

You can shut the gate on this one, its the ducks guts!!!!!

Well i must say, i'm extremely impressed with this doco on the old Mad Max GT351 XB Falcon, you tell a clear description and good understanding of it's life. Thank you Michael.

I used to clean the interior of my cousin's XB GT when I was a kid of 11. A Ford Pepper red one with the black bonnet infill. On the weekends, I was occasionally lucky enough to go racing with him. He would change the car to a race prepared engine on Friday, load up the trailer on Saturday with track tyres and and we'd drive to the track. At the track, he would sticker the car, change tyres, attend scrutineering, compete, change back to road tyres, drive home and change the engine back on Sunday. All the while with me just wide eyed, grinning and soaking it in for the whole day. This does sounds like a tall story, but if you followed super car racing in the 70's and 80's in New Zealand, you'll know the driver I'm referring to... An amazing video, thank you so much. This bought back some wonderful memories for me.

79 I was 16 and thanks to that movie I'm putting the blower on my F-100 Ford 460 I'm 57 now Rock on interceptor

7:41 I saw Mad Max at the long gone Rowville drive-in in Melbourne on release. I had a very quick XA four door at the time, and Mel was very nearly correct.

Fantastic job on this. As a Yank that has owned and built TWO Interceptor replica, one MM1 and one Fury Road (now redone to road Warrior), I know a little bit about the car and movies as well as the group of Aussie Falcon owners. You could have reached out to Cameron Manwell as he is who built the five Falcons for Fury Road(three blacks and two Razors). Cheers and great job!

@ 3:51 Concorde panel van concept unveiled at the ’77 Melbourne Motor Show. Penned by visionary designer Peter Arcadipane and built by motor body craftsman Sam Midgley, the Concorde went on to be sold in kit form and became the styling inspiration for a certain famous black Interceptor hardtop.

Best documentary I watched in a long time ...that car when I saw it in the movies was straight out legendary...I shed tears when the car got blown up in Road Warrior.. thanks for bringing fond memories back in this video..❤

I lost this video in my history after a barrage of children's videos buried it (nephew stayed for a week, forgot to change the account on the tv) and today it reappeared in my recommended. Could not be happier to have taken the extra 21 minutes to stay awake and finally watch it, excellently done video that I Will be sharing with friends, now I've got to plan a trip to Orlando for next year.

Well done video, very informative; loved seeing the car at the Kendal motor museum when younger . Still got the VHS video of the film that was dubbed, wasn't till i watched it again when i was about 15 on the BBC that I realised it was an Australian film!!

One of the best cinematic masterpieces made, an d on a low budget, shows that imagination and creativity , beats cash, in some instances.

I spent 2 years as Senior/VIP Tour Guide for the Dezer Auto Collection in Orlando, FL. Of all the cars in the museum, I spent more time with the Black on Clack than any other. When it came time to clean the dust off her from storage, I had to insist that the interior and under the hood "not be cleaned" except the seat, because fans would expect a layer of grime. My biggest guest complaint was that the finish was too shiny. I would let VIP guests take a white glove and touch the engine or help check the oil, then keep the dirty glove as a souvenir. It's still there, and for sale for US$3.6MIL. I have interior and under the hood pics if anyone wants them.

I saw the movie at the drive-in, way back then. Everyone was talking about the car. The rear quarters looked like they were from an early 70s Torino. You Aussies have done some amazing work with American muscle. I am originally from north-central Ohio, so it's cool to learn that the motor used was the 351 Cleveland. KZfaq has the movie available, so I believe I'll take a ride on the way-back machine, tonight.

Though I was only vaguely famiiar with The Interceptor (I'm in the U.S.) my love of U.S. muscle cars naturally drew me to the Falcon (I surmised The Interceptor to look very much like the U.S. Ford Torino). I learned a lot about the history of this legendary cinema star. Thanks for your efforts and upload regarding this video. I would guess that The Interceptor is the Australian equal of the "Bullitt Mustang) here in the states regarding it's fame and affection for the car by mover-goers. Cheers!

I notice the type of side-pipes change from one version to another. In the opening of Road Warrior they are clearly thin and straight but on the XB used for speed runs they are wide and fluted. Most of the restorations I’ve seen also appear to have fluted pipes.

This amazing car started my love for everything automotive. There's no other car in the history of film has done more to excite the passion for truly awesome cars. I still remember coming out of the movie theater with so much excitement and I remember finding a magazine about this car at my local bookstore and hanging the pictures of this car all around my bedroom. I was so obsessed about this truly amazing car and it's still the car of my dream's till this very day...💯

Myvfav all time car...Me and my wife were friends with the owners of the Cars of the stars museum in Keswick UK were the interceptor was i sat in that car more times than my dads car...and even got to start it when they were servicing all the cars... it was so loud and had to switch the blower on...a dream come true for me... great vid of the original and best Mad Max car.
