A very through, in-depth look at what it took in 1948 to run a modern transit system. With the consolidation in 1921 of nine lines, the Toronto Transit Commission was formed. History of transit in Toronto is outlined. Then on to daily maintaince, the repair shops, the paint shops. We follow along as a new motorman is trained and goes out for his first run. We go along with the emergency crew to a downed trolley wire. Track maintaince, electric generation, bus maintance first aid and mored are covered.

I love how much care they provided our transportation in this documentary. It's really nice to hear Toronto was famous for clean streets back then. I know it will be like this again one day!

When the TTC was properly funded. Before cuts to maintenance, cleaning, and improvements became the rule.

...when the TTC was operated by businessmen, politicians were forbidden from being on the Commission, and it was required to be self-sufficient.

Awesome, I really love watching these old TTC videos, even if I wasn't born in the 90s. And also one question if you don't mind, do you have any footages of the T1s first day of entering passenger service in 1995? Thanks.

Interesting time capsule. Not a chance today would a Jim Anderson (16:20ish mark) even be considered for a TTC job unless he was legacy. Sorry Jimmy, you don’t tick any diversity boxes. That’s what a TTC employee told my friend when he applied two years ago.

I remember when I filled out my first TTC application back in 1991. It had a detachable page with the various diversity questions. Of course, they were only interested in race and sex (as in male, female). They hadn't gotten around to smizmars and furry animal status yet.

@@davidweatherbe7740 hehe. It's a very broken Canada in which we now live. That being said, my grandfather, having just completed five years of WWII combat and post-war service for Canada in the 50s applied to the TTC. And at that time, they were only hiring Scotsmen. A fourth generation Canadian veteran couldn't get in the TTC back then for a different reason. No accent. Always some BS going on.

@@argopunk (replying from my other account) Believe me, I can relate. I ended up at GO Transit. The guys that came over from TTC to GO didn't have a whole lot to say about "the other place." I left GO in 2017 and now drive buses in Orlando. The pay cut sucks but I don't miss the political bullshit, especially since Metrolinx.

I wish I'd been around back then. For one thing, it doesn't look like the TTC was big into diversity hires in 1948. Toronto used to really be a nice place once.
