This is Viivikonna, an abandoned ghost town in Eastern Estonia that used to be a mining hub in the 1920s. But as the oil shale dried up, the townspeople moved away, and when Estonia gained independence from the Soviet Union in the 1990s, Viivikonna became a ghost town. Today, it is home to only 50 permanent residents, who continue to watch as their town changes before their eyes. Watch as host Bridget Barbara takes us through Viivikonna’s history.

That feeling when I live in a town that is 25 km from Viivikonna and this is a first time I hear about it, thank you, it's time to explore.

I'm Estonian and I'm surprised about this town. Sad about young people who are acting bad. :(

There are stories like this all around the Baltics. Natural resources running dry during the soviet era leaving behind towns and villages with people nowhere else to go or people too stubborn to move. I hope something gets done to preserve this part of our history.

Dylan, you and your group are the best, and you yourself are the biggest, craziest kook of all! My brother-in-law always tells me that if I knew people like you and Kaitlin the Mortician, my world would be perfect! I've told Kaitlin this already but I think the two of you just have a wonderful way of putting a smile on people's faces. You make exploring fun as you show us places and stories of awe and intrigue. The two of you would make a great cable show as you present places of wonder and stories of the unusual. Thank you for what you guys do: enlighten us, entertain us, educate us. I bought your book about two years ago here in Los Angeles. I think it's called the Skylight Bookstore? Something like that. Anyway, I read a couple of pages everyday and then watch KZfaq videos about each pages subjects. So much fun! I was thrilled to see that you did a video about The House on the Rocks up near Spring Green in Wisconsin. I LOVE that place and hardly anyone has ever heard about it except for people who group in that region like me. I have an idea you might want to check out around Halloween time, but look into Bachelor's Grove outside of Chicago, which is supposed to be incredibly haunted. Have you checked out the locations of the Manson murders since their 50th anniversary are coming up in August? Anyway, again thanks! I truly I bump into you one day, It would make my day. So, keep up the excellent work , young man, as well as the kookiness. I'd love to know the history of Atlas Obscura one day. I assume you came up with the idea, but how did it all come about. Maybe do a show about that some day. Take care!

Calling it a ghost town, desolate, etc., will only attract more destruction to the area by idiots.

I'd love to move here, convert an upstairs floor into a cozy apartment, work online, shop weekly. Peace and quiet, no noisy neighbours, barking dogs... heaven. I'm currently learning Russian, which will be helpful. Where can I sign up?

what in this story led you to believe this town is hauted? People moved due to no way to provide an income for their families.

Background music too loud. Might be fine for young ears, but older people have difficulty picking voices out from overlaying noise.

@@Jaiven Good idea, the subtitles! Fine if your eyesight is up to it. Elderly people are often registered blind. You'll find out, too, when you get old.

Sounds like to me they need a small police force there. I would have thought night time visitors would be supposed (but usually fake) ghost hunters. Hey, I'd gladly live there.. I like being away from mass people. I'd gladly also help police the area.. hehe! :p Many of those abandoned places are unsafe, but if stupid people want to party inside let them at it. If there are no occupied homes next to the abandoned place it is at their own risk. I hope the tourism brings in some money for the families there. :)
