Maybe I misheard you, but the first Strangers isn't set during the 60s-70s; they have cell phones.

I second this. Haven't seen it since middle school but I remember them finding a cell phone and trying to call.

@KANDL95 I haven't seen it in a couple years, but I'm certain Liv puts hers on the charger when they get to the house, and after the scare where Bag Head is in the house but she didn't notice, when they go to get the phone like you mention, the charger cable is empty.

Yeah, there is a timelessness to everything else. The cabin, the music… etc. so I see why she could think that. It takes cues from that time period, but it’s definitely based on the 2008ish time it came out, cell phones are made a pretty big focus. Even the friend Mike (who is a Golden God) gets a voicemail to get him to the house and tries calling from the car to say he’s there

This from Wikipedia: "Though the film takes place in 2005, the house itself was deliberately constructed with an architecture reminiscent of 1970s ranch houses and dressed in furnishings applicable to the era". I guess that's where the confusion came from?

Amazing review, well balanced, and not immediately shitting on the film just because it’s a retelling of the first. Keep up the good work!

There have been so many 1 star reviews on Letterboxd with people just saying "it's bad" without actually explaining anything about what made it so bad. I think the original film is "okay" and I haven't seen any of the others, but I've been wanting to check this one out because I love Madelaine Petsch. I will definitely check it out now hearing you say that you enjoyed it.

I don't think it deserves 1 star, I think it was average/ just ok. There was entertainment in it but I probably won't watch it again

Good review. I’m surprised you didn’t mention Richard Brake since you loved Barbarian. I can’t WAIT to see how he appears in the next one! Will be watching just for him.

The first reviewer that liked it the same way I did. I almost said that was good by the end but caught myself because I heard all the bad press and left it at that was entertaining. Idk if it was good or entertaining but a week later I’m not mad and still really enjoyed it

I'm glad there are some other people who thought there was entertainment in it. I don't understand why you have to either love or hate a film.

I am not on your wavelength with this one, but I do appreciate that you have your own opinion even if it differs from a lot of other creators’. I would rather disagree with a real opinion than agree with someone who’s just jumping on a bandwagon.

U said this movie isnt a beat for beat remake of the original and then went on to list off little differences like happy couple vs sad couple. The major beats of the story are all very much the same. Appreciate your take and enjoyed listening. Agree that this is a beautiful movie but disagree that it isnt "mostly" a beat for beat remake

I'm shocked you liked it this much to be honest. I thought the acting was okay at BEST; the guy I thought was quite mediocre, even bad at times. There were so many weird shots, including face zoom-ins that were out of place. The story was cliche; small town hicks don't like the big city guys and gals, car breaks down, etc.. Scares were basic, predictable. It did not add any originality to the premise of the original, just seemed like a poor imitation in my mind. I also felt like this movie dragged A LOT in certain sequences, it felt longer than it was.

PG-13? Really? Oh no! Well maybe when it comes out physical they'll release an unrated version like they did with Megan. Good review and cool video Sarah!👉🙂👈

I would say it's good enough as a standalone film , but it suffers when compared to the original. I think my experience was hampered by rewatching the original 2 films the night before. It followed a lot of same beats as the first, but I don't think this one built tension anywhere near as well and when you're remaking something you've got to work harder to justify it existing. If you go into this having not seen the originals at all, or not in a long time, then I think you'll get more out of it than if the original is fresh in your mind. I think it was also held back by the knowledge that there's 2 more films, so certain scenes didn't have the stakes they should because you know the thing it's teasing won't happen in the first film of the trilogy. Plus some of the character decisions were do dumb it was frustrating, as those decisions didn't make sense other than to make 2 more films happen. Definitely not the worst film I've seen this year because Night Swim will always exist.

Great review! I also enjoyed this film. I gave it 3.5 stars in letter box. I wish it would have separated itself from the formula of the original, but otherwise I enjoyed it. My favorite part was the piano scene.

For me, I'm not keen on home invasion films and I didn't really enjoy the first Strangers entry either, so I'm not too fussed about this one. I'll watch it when it pops up on streaming, though.

Was Strangers an American version of the French film "ILS" (Them)? The movies are similar with the French version, in my opinion, way more creepy and chilling. The American version is more straight forward and gory.

The biggest question I have is how many roads actually connect to the cabin because when the cops showed up they were coming straight forward the strangers left to the right the waitress come from and went in a different direction she could have hide the Honda close and they were inside she waited

Because jay and silent bob Degrassi and scream are all in the same universe and all have connected you can easily say time travel is happening from movie to movie because the first strangers movie is in the 2000s the second prey at night is after the first set in the 70s or 80s and this prequel is in the future past both movies that would happen because of time travel

Here in the U.S. this is not PG-13, but in fact R Rated. Apart from the F-Bombs, this is most tame R Rated horror movie I ever seen since Annabelle Comes Home.

You actually wouldn’t have to set it in a time period before the first movie because prey are night the 70s 80s style of prey at night is a sequel but the first movie was set in the early 2000s this is a prequel it’s definitely a prequel because of time travel happy death day is a school set on a infinite loop of the same day over and over again because of a time travel device which is messing with time outside of the school the school is the only place living the same day you can easily say the strangers is in the same universe
