whether you like Barbie or not - the IMPACT of this movie is undeniably & is a movie WE all needed in a world constantly filled with film made and targeted to JUST a male audience

I love that Barbie's outfits get darker, and less girlier, the longer she spends in the human world, culminating in her wearing a yellow dress when she decides to become human. Her hair also becomes more realistic. In the opposite direction, Sasha starts off with all black clothing and straight hair, only for them to become pinker and girlier in Barbie world.

To me Sasha was what many teen girls feel when faced with the cruelty of the real world: a rejection of all things girly as a means of self protection. Many of us pass through a phase like that, where we don't associate with stereotypical girly things like pink, glitter, cuteness or dresses because that would make us seem "less" in the eyes of people who value maleness over everything else. Sasha wearing girlirer clothes at the end to me is an acceptance that girliness and femininity (and thus Barbie as well) isn't lesser, like the world told her it was

It's crazy how the Academy usually fails to notice Contemporary Costume Design, Production Design, Hair and Makeup. Barbie managed to make a world of dolls come to life and made it shown that the designers GREW UP with Barbie. (Poor things was good, but felt more of a safe pick for Production and Costume Design.)

Taking off your accessories when feeling like garbage is so relatable i would weep

YES your points about Sasha's transformation not being fleshed out and Barbie's reasons for becoming human not being clear articulated exactly what I was feeling coming out of that movie! They could have done so much more with the story. The sets and outfits are amazing though!

I love how Barbie was able to admit that both Barbieland and the Real world mistreated both sides. While Barbie Land used Kens as nothing more then props, the Real world did the same but with women.

I love when creators have passion for what they are making and do their homework, it makes movies like this and Cinderella so much better. It shows that they care about what they are making not just trying to make a buck.

The only Oscar win worthy element I thought that Barbie had was Production and set design. Without it Barbie wouldn't be the same. Also Makeup and Hairstyling which didn't even get nominated. (Loved Poor things but Bella's look was pretty much the same for the entirety of the film. Think they went for the Willem Dafoe's prosthetic face which isn't even that mind-blowing)

Considering that this movie came from the same studio that made the Harry Potter movies which the movies were shot at the Warner Bros Studios in Leavesden and the success of the franchise led WB to give Harry Potter it's own studio tour in Leavesden, I hope they can do the same for Barbie as the movie was filmed there too. Come on WB, you gave Harry Potter a studio tour, Barbie should definitely get one too 🤗

It’s probably unrelated, but I love that Gloria (America Ferreira) used to be “Ugly Betty”. I had been watching the show when Barbie came out so I immediately noticed and had one those NO WAY moments

Some other wizard of Oz references in the film- when barbie drives through barbie land there’s movie posters from the wizard of Oz up and when Ken takes over and makes it a Kendom the black smoke over the rainbow proclaiming that is a reference to the wicked witch writing “surrender Dorothy” in black smoke

Fun fact as a hairstylist! One of the tons they used in barbies hair to make it the perfect shade of barbie blonde was adding PINK to the formula 💕 they would also have to tone the wigs every day because they would get so brassy constantly being touched up while shooting. They also made her hairstyles go from much more elaborate and perfect and as she becomes imperfect her hair becomes super soft and natural. And then there's Allan! 😂 I didnt even realize i was wearing my kenough hoodie when i put this on.

Barbie was honestly the best film of 2023 for sure! I went twice to see it in the cinema! Have always loved Barbie growing up (was obsessed with my twin sister and use to play with them) truly iconic. Greta did an amazing job bringing the world to life! Perfect film for everyone

I feel the same way about Barbie as I do about the little mermaid (2023) . when I talked to some family + friends about the little mermaid , they said the movie wasn’t anything special . & I’m just kind of like I thought we were watching it w/the mentality that we were happy we got a live Black Disney Princess instead of expecting it to be the best movie ever . I’m a Black girl & the representation meant everything to me . I didn’t care that it wasn’t perfect . as far as Barbie , I didn’t think it was the best movie ever , but I didn’t care neither . I’m happy that we have a movie that celebrates girlhood + womanhood all while celebrating femininity bc we have too many mainstream movies that make feminine characters the “ditzy villain” as opposed to the complex protagonist . I feel like we’re overly critical of movies or other forms of entertainment that involve women & especially Black women . stop expecting perfection & just enjoy the damn movie !!

I've said this before but I think the heart locket is also a reference to Barbie in the nutcracker (the first Barbie movie) Clara (Barbie's character) wears a heart locket. It hasn't been confirmed (that I know of) but if it's actually a reference then that's very sweet

I love all the effort they put into this film: the A-list cast, all-star soundtrack, amazing costumes and sets--and most of all, an important message (whether or not you think it hits it's mark).

THE VISUALS IN THIS MOVIE ARE INCREDIBLE 😍 they way they are used for story telling is so inspiring and creative and shows what good visuals can be 💖 the other one I thought of was Turning Red, it’s super fun but has such a heart and the way the movie uses colour in the movie is truly so smart

I think the only issue, set wise, I had is the fake pool water. Wait for it. So many of the barbie toys had a button where you can use water. One theory is ken being able to hide in the car because that is what a kid did while playing. It makes no sense that a kid does not mess with the water systems in the toys. I know Barbie World is supposed to look plastic, but I thought that would be a good touch to every now and then use the water feature some of the toys had.

as soon as this movie came out , I think people’s first instinct was to judge & criticize it as much as possible . I didn’t think it was the best movie made on planet earth , but who cares ? we got a movie about girlhood that celebrates women & femininity , despite the millions of movies that demonize it & promote women to be “not like other girls” . we have a message about how women can be feminine & beautiful while still being the president or a doctor , a writer , a CEO or just being a regular woman . & everybody was complaining about how it taught “elementary feminism” , but once again , who cares .. I’m sure Greta Gerwig wanted to make the message basic & universal for ANYONE to understand , including little boys & girls . all in all , I don’t think this movie deserves the hate it gets . & I’m glad it was the biggest movie of last summer .

You've explained in 35 minutes what would've taken someone like me 7 hours. You even spotted a lot of details (i.e. Gloria's past self as the origin of Weird Barbie) that I completely missed. Every single detail builds toward the thematic strength of what Greta Gerwig is doing. While I still consider "Lady Bird" and "Little Women" to be better films from Gerwig, the 8 months I've spent thinking about "Barbie" is proof enough that it shares its predecessors' unshakeable sense of purpose. All three films are essays that examine a specific aspect of living and breathing and interacting with other people and having an identity. Barbie's fear is of change, but she starts sabotaging herself by thinking about death. Or at least it would be labeled "sabotage" in a world fixated on partying (i.e. the interruption to the disco). So Barbie and Ken go to the Real World, and Ken's attention-deficit presence ("I hate when people think, I get so bored") forces Barbie to focus harder on her mission and be the more mature, balanced one. Not long after this she sees what she needs to see: a woman who has aged to 91 but exists happily with this change ... still out in the world and independent, reading a newspaper and taking the bus. Later, Barbie meets Ruth who (unbeknownst to her) died 20 years ago yet still exists as a flawed but happy person. Ruth changed the world, and ends up being very proud of Barbie for wanting to do the same. Then there's Barbie's spiritual connection to Gloria, who embraces Barbie's ideals but whose mantra is "life is all change".

As someone who rejected femininity as a preteen, only to embrace it as an adult, I think Sasha represents internalized misogyny and how you can find joy in femininity even if it once felt constricting.

I still think this was one of the best movies I've seen in the last decade and I don't honestly think they could've done it any better. This movie was the definition of mainstream art coming to life

Also I know it's petty but I hate how they said that Sasha was a a tween when clearly the actress was around 16. Just make her a 16 year old, because that's the age she is.

I love how you pointed out the outfits and what it’s telling the viewer about the person wearing it. I didn’t pick up on that honestly, and it’s such a neat visual especially for Gloria💕 Also I’d like to point out that at the end, when Barbie is about to be interviewed for a job in the real world, she’s not dressed stereotypically or like how Gloria was dressed at her job (suit, tie, white collared shirt and suit pants). She has a modest white tank underneath her suit and sandals to pair with her purse. Maybe that represents how she’s still new to the business world. Or that she still enjoys wearing the things she used to wear (the cut of the tank reminds me of the cut of her dress at the start of the movie), and still likes to be feminine but incorporates more things into her own style of femininity, like the sandals.

I just feel the need to say I love well researched analytical videos like these, I already really liked the movie (watched it twice on the same day bc my family felt like taking me with them after I'd already gone with friends in matching pink fits haha), but going into the details of certain things like the true symbolism and impact of the fashion (smth I'm a big fan of) in this film lets me gain a new kind of appreciation for the efforts put into the movie. Thank you for this video!!! Barbie is such an incredible movie. I know some people critiqued its feminism as shallow, which isn’t necessarily wrong but so many women become feminists through this kind of feminism. It was a starting point for so many of us! And while Gloria’s speech didn’t overly hit home for me, there’s a time when it would’ve and it validated so many women who’ve never had their struggles named and acknowledged before. I think it’s more important for those women to feel seen and understood than it is for a movie to give a comprehensive analysis of feminism. Like since when did we expect mainstream cinema to do that? Meanwhile others somehow thought it was attacking men when it literally did the opposite. It was incredibly compassionate to men (even though imo it really didn’t need to be). Also since when did men want to be centred in barbie anything??? I think people got so caught up in politics that they somehow forgot it’s a BARBIE movie. It’s about many things but so much of it is about dolls and the experience of playing with dolls as a little girl and how that changes as we grow. Thank you for appreciating this movie for what it is and not expecting it to be everything for everyone 💕

I love your insight into this film. It was really interesting and thought-provoking, and you included loads of trivia I didn't know. The idea of Barbie was taken from a German pin-up character doll, "Bild Lilli", not a creation of Ruth Handler, and the movie includes a few other nods to Stanley Kubrick films, too. Also, I didn't notice them when I'd watched the movie, but, there was a behind-the-scenes making-of video where it was mentioned that there were loads of pink monkeys hidden around the set of BarbieLand.

Sorry for talking about beauty and the beast, but your complaint made me think of something I haven’t before. I may be overthinking this, but the village looking like a set makes me think of 2 things. Theatre and belle feel cramped in the small village which is why the set creates this feeling. When she moves to the castle, everything is big, vast, her being free from her life at the village even though she does not feel free with the beast yet. Again, overanalyzing it.

I loved BARBIE the movie. love love loved it. and I love this video essay! the way you folded skill share into your video was amazing! brava! but your detail, your understanding, your love of how the film works, your knowledge of the barbie world, of pop culture, of design and design trends, of how all of these different things came together to create this cohesive world that is now the 7th highest grossing movie of all time-these are all expert. this essay, almost by default, also is an excellent exploration of how the film precisely is not anti-male or anti-motherhood or woke or any of the dumb and reductive labels that the right wing have tried to put on this film. by looking at what is-very much-specifically in this film, and why it is in the film, you dispel any other message or "agenda" that the haters of this film have tried to put on it since BARBIE was announced as going into production. because your essay is looking at the design elements of the story telling, your essay is largely apolitical. yet you clearly illustrate how the film works, and you articulate the ideas the film is attempting to discuss and present. when you do this which such specificity and detail, it becomes 100% clear how any of the fears, frustrations, or distaste that anyone may have that is leading them to spout some false narrative they think the film is saying or embracing, well-that is on them. it is not the work of some Taylor Swift concerts in the rain Wicca conjuring trying to steal the souls of all women, and to destroy all men. simply you show quite clearly how everything in the film happens and why the film goes where it goes ultimately through barbie and the world of barbie. from the outset you state that barbie the toy was marketed for girls, and therefore that is the world the doll was created for, and that will be the world view of where this film exists. it is that simple. and you are also clear to point out that BARBIE is not a perfect film in your eyes. all of the praise here is coming from you very specifically towards specific things. this is such a great discussion of what makes this film so unique, groundbreaking, and so fun. I really appreciate and respect your work here. amazing ! The house in Psycho was inspired by The House By the Railroad by Edward Hopper! His paintings feel somewhat staged and superficial, much like the sets of the movie!

I have so many fond memories of playing with Barbie dolls. I recently looked up pictures of the princess Barbie dolls from the animated movies and I think they still hold up. If a studio would film any fantasy movie and use the dresses from swan lake or fairytopia it would be awesome. Love your videos.

We have several popular chick flicks, including Titanic, Mean Girls, The Notebook, and Marie Antionette in 2006. However, Barbie might be overhyped. The story was fine, but the aesthetics were incredible! I call Barbieland Pastel Paradise! Most of the costumes were Girly pastel confections! I wish more movies looked like Marie Antionette & Barbie!

I was the girl that used to rip off Barbie's heads instead of playing with them, yet I still enjoyed this movie despite not being a fan of Barbie or dolls in general. I do find it hard to like Barbie the doll though because of the many negative things associated with her such as you know how the women that make these dolls are treated so poorly and it is made by a capitalist for profit company, which also made me a little uneasy watching the movie with these things in mind.

I love this movie so much but I gotta say my least favorite part is Ken, he's basically the main antagonist to the whole movie just because barbie didn't like him like that, I don't like him lol

In all the talk of how badly Ken is treated, I never hear anyone point out that Barbieland is basically a five-to-nine year old girl's fantasy. But definitely nobody would expect such a child to have any knowledge or interest in boys or romance or physical love beyond the parody that children know, which is that men are around (but not centered in a girl's world) and boys are kind of yucky, and girls have boyfriends but they don't really know why. It's not a value judgement against men, or a statement of where they belong. It's meant to be childish. Giving Kens a voice at all is a rebellion of us in the real world feeling it's unfair for men to not have representation. But somewhere in the five-to-nine year old boys fantasy land there certainly are no girls or female representation. It's all matchbox cars and G.I. Joes. That's why this movie is so silly. (Totally fun! But meant to be silly too.) Because no little boy OR girl would want to play with the Kens in Barbieland. They're just not the point.
