i wish people complaining about Wish realize what they're complaining about isn't it's animation... but it's art style. yes they go hand in hand cus it's a visual medium, but animation is stuff like movement, camera (at least in 2d), solid drawing, 12 princples stuff ect ect how the colors n stuff look is what you all are complaining about, which is its art style. which is bad for reasons i can't explain in the comments, y'all are hitting some points but not all imo. I'm only saying this cus I hate the ACTUAL ANIMATION in WISH and no one's talking about it! It's frustrating. the biggest gripe is how much they claim to take from Classic Disney (by definiton this is Gold and Silver age Disney. Snow White to Sleeping Beauty) it's clearly not based on Classic Disney aka the animation from the 9 Old Men, but RENAISSANCE Disney, so the 80s aka Glen Keane ect. Which is so ironic cus the work from the 9 Old Men look more 3 Dimensional and SOLID than Wish. Its like a worserGlen Keane oh fun fact Glean Keane was the one who designed Rapunzel lol he also saved Disney from Bankruptcy with Ariel and the Little Mermaid. So its no wonder Tangled and Wish look like that they can't get over the man who basically saved their asses.

Off topic, but to be honest, as much as I love tangled the series (it being my favorite show), they really lost the charm from the movie, it just looks so much less colorful, and they don't utilize lighting.

Thank you for not saying that 2D is better than 3D, instead trying to think of improvements to the style they intended for. I always see people online imply that 2D is automatically better and more authentic, ignoring all the beautiful, varied CGI animated movies. I agree with everything here!! Great video!! 🤗🩷

The way you love and connect with Tangled (deservedly so) is the same way I feel about Beauty and the Beast. To me, it’s a flawless masterpiece and I think it oozes charm and ambition even with its colors. (From Belle being the only blue character in the beginning to the Beast wearing blue at the ballroom) Great video as always tho! (Fingers crossed you’ll make a video about that movie one day)

I LOVE Tangeld!!! It's my all time favorite movie and it inspired me so much as a kid artistically and still does to this day. Rapunzel and Eugene/ Flynn rider are my favorite Disney couple and they are even more adorable in the tv series!! Tangeld the series is amazing and has that same cozy and charming feel to.💜☀️🎨👑🦎

I also think another contributing factor to the difference in art styles between the two movies could be that Tangled had more industry veterans working on it, who knew how to achieve the precise look they wanted and how to effectively communicate it to the entire team. Prior to and during the production of Wish, there were massive layoffs in Disney's animation department, a big chunk of which (from what I understand) ended up being the kind of industry veterans who could have fleshed out and improved Wish's art style. I'm proud of all the artists and animators who worked on Wish, since it's clear they all did their absolute best. But you can really feel the absence of those veteran animators in the final product, especially when comparing footage of Wish to Tangled. Anyways, awesome video! I learned a lot I didn't know before. And yeah, Tangled is my all-time favorite film, no contest. I've made it my life goal to someday create a story that's as charming and emotional as that. Looking forward to your eventual deep-dive on it!

man THANK YOU for bringing up paperman! i was so surprised to hear that wish didn't just cop all the tech from paperman. it uses value so powerfully and wish could have learned so much from any given still. excellent essay, thank you for this!! 🙏

I was hoping for something that looked like the netflix movie Klaus. Like disney concept art brought to life. Or even like the story-books they make. I've always felt like a lot of the artistic qualities get lost when going from 2D concept art to 3D. I'm honestly baffled by how they made Paperman a decade ago but still found a way to make this look worse.

Wish pisses me off so badly. Not only is the animation just ugly and unfinished, full stop, nobody gave a damn about the story, the characters, and the legacy it was celebrating. Seriously, these movies are getting uglier and uglier and more lifeless. They honestly should have just done a 2D animated film because first of all, that would cost less, and second, that's what this company was BUILT on. I love the classic movies like Snow White, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland and I'm sure a lot of adults who grew up with the Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast would've appreciated it so fucking much. Disney is going to be the death of me as an animation lover 😑

I don't agree with your last point It was supposed to come out in 2023 They did not have to _finish_ working on the movie in 2023, it could have been finished at any point and _released_ in 2023

The composition of wish bugs me. There are way too many scenes where it looks to big and empty. It feels like an uncomfortable use of negative space. Instead of singling out the main focal point it just makes things feel weird like there is something missing

I loved Tangled ever since I saw it in theaters when it came out. I was already hyped seeing promotions for it before it came out and it did not disappoint. It was my Frozen. I would watch it, re-enact it, and sing the songs. My wish is for Gigantic to be made again and bring back Nathan Greno to direct it

When i first heard of the announcement for 'A movie 100 years in the making!' from Disney, i thought to myself oh okay theyre gonna release that movie they scrapped to make Tangled about the various Mickey Mouses throughout the year ala Mickey in Wonderland, right? Or maybe a documentary.. something that would certainly show the evolution of one man's dream into a multibillion dollar corporation all off the back of one little mouse; and i was here for it. What better way to celebrate the Centennial legacy of this person smd their teams expansive story telling, heck its even made a park on almost evey Continent!! When it was announced that Wish was what they were making.. I wasnt upset, i thought okay theyll have the wishes represent every movie. Star will be The Wishing Star or a Jimmy Cricket Type that is leading our Walt stand in to follow his dreams of creating this legacy, cue the whole 'when you wish upon a star' song, that would be cool! Oh the grandpa is turning 100 and this is about his wish? Okay perfect that's what theyre gonna do with the story, right? .. wrong. The more and more they started announcing or leaking what the movie was about (and the changes to the initial ideas/project) i just had to wonder where exactly the legacy or celebration of the Centennial was, what the story even had to do with the 'time it took to make it' (i thought, at least the story would be set exactly 100 years ago maybe? Maybe that's the tie in? Nope) Wish was such a disappointment when you stop and consider what could have been released in its place and how much pressure was put on this actually really good plotline to 'live up' to the modern disney standard that it progressively became more modern in its portrayal and story and lost any connection to the real person who theyre supposed to be celebrating. Luckily we got the Once Along a Studio Short which barely smoothed over the hole in our hearts

I've said it before and I'll say it again!! Wish wanted what the Spiderverse movies, Arcane, and Nimona all had but refused to commit to at every opportunity. There's also a video game called "Dordogne" and it has an entirely watercolor based art style. If I recall correctly, they used actual watercolor paintings. I also want to be clear that I am not blaming the animators for the movie's visual faults. They had to have been overworked and underpaid, and the artbook shows they had good ideas that were inevitably shot down for the safest possible option. I've also heard that the movie was supposed to be all 2D animation but was changed sometime during production, but I don't know how true that is haha

What baffles me is that the “moving painting” look of a movie isn’t even all that new. 2017’s Loving Vincent is one of the earlier and imo best examples. Like cmon disney, ITS RIGHT THERE

Wish feels like it wants to be like Spiderverse but didn't want to put in the time to refine the animation. I mean it took 4 years to make one Spiderverse movie and that's with overworking the animators

The movie just looks so lifeless in comparison to other animated films. The muted colors. The lack of personality in character animation. No contrast with lighting. I didn't even bother to see it in theaters, because it looked so bland. Which is ironic because almost every movie I saw that year was an animated movie.

I love this video so muchhhh it perfectly encapsulates my opinions on tangled and wish. I’ve seen tangled many many times and replayed the part where Eugene takes rapunzels hand in the boat probably over 100 times. It is so incredibly magical while also dealing with more mature topics like kidnapping, gaslighting, grief, attempted murder, hanging, etc. Wish is…. Just the opposite. I do not like it. Tangled: 9.9/10 (0.1 point deducted for plot holes, but I can absolutely look past them) Wish: 1.3/10 (points for SOME members of the production crew putting their heart and soul into the movie, I mean probably right? Can’t think of an example of who, but it’s Disney. It’s a lot of people’s dream job. Someone went the extra mile maybe.)

19:53 I honestly HATE how they animated Asha's hair it's so boring an uncreative. box braids love to whip around and create bold curling silhouettes. She had beautiful beads in her hair in the concept art and it's a shame they were removed. Her hair ends up looking like this very flat black rectangle towel on her head:/
