The Sumerian King List is one of the oldest written documents in the history of the world. Though it lists many of the rulers and ruling city-states of ancient Sumer and Akkad, what more does it tell us with regard to the history of the region? Or does it tell us anything? In this episode, we'll understand just what the Sumerian King List is, what its purpose was, and why it may be important for our study of the history of ancient Mesopotamia.

I never grow tired of the histories of these ancient lands. I’d love to see a video on post new kingdom Egypt, Urartu, the Medes, Lydia, and the phygrians. Especially post new kingdom Egypt.

One of my favorite theories for why the year list is so long is that the ancient Kings traveled with the Annunaki, and due to the properties of their space travel, the kings would only be gone, in their mind, for 10 or 20 years, but in reality, tens of thousands of years would’ve passed on earth.

This reminds me of the Arabic chronicles when they talk about Ancient Kings that ruled for hundreds of years but when they came to times that are closer to them then we can see real dates and reasonable periods of rules.

It's said (in the Babylonian standard version I think) that the gods diminished mankind with a deluge because they had become too noisy and disturbed the gods' peace. This is because they multiplied rapidly and had long ages. After the deluge we still see long reigns for kings, but they seem to decrease in time (not instantly) as we drift further from the event. Quite a smooth transition to the more sensible years of reign.

In the Bible in Genesis after the Great Flood the descendants of Shem had also declining longevity as the centuries passed by the time when Terah left Ur with his son Abraham and his wife.

I wonder if since both days and years are cycles defined by the sun, if its possible the same word might have been used for both and if perhaps these unrealistically long reigns make more sense if measured in days, rather than years. 108,000 days is just under 300 years, which is more plausible for a long-reigning dynasty. Perhaps it was only later that separate words developed for long (year) and short (day) solar cycles and by the time writing became more common, they were conflated for the older stories?

That's an interesting take on it...I personally don't know, but I something also think if something was lost in translation or maybe there was just some assumed understanding in those days that is not conveyed in the text. Hi, thanks so much for the really constructive feedback, I really appreciate it as it helps me to make these better for you all. Yeah, sound has generally been a weakness of mine. In the past I began turning it up because I received complaints from several people that it wasn't loud enough, especially for devices like tablets and phones, so I starting ramping up the sound. But I guess it also comes with the problem of at times being too loud. I'll do my best to find a happy medium but thanks for bringing this to my attention. If you see (rather, hear) problems in future videos, please don't hesitate to let me know. It'll really help as I try to find the best sound level for the most people. Thanks again, stay safe!

I love this video. I was also very surprised of the length of years described in sumerian history. and I was thinking to myself that the Bible has a similarity in this craze, though a bit more reasonnable, but everyone born before the great flood was living hundreds of years. Mathusalem being almost 1000 years old when he died. After the flood, the land was cursed, and people lived less and less (Abraham died at 180 years old, but later 120 was the limit). if people of the past thought this way, there must be something we are missing. We can't apply the logic of today to people back then. I hope this mistery will be solved one day

Yeah I also wondered the say same. Even the kings of Persian, Chinese and other epics lived for hundreds of years in the remote past. I wonder why this seems to be the case in literature. May it's true because they weren't eating diets high in saturated fats or fast food? Haha but seriously, it's interesting that such long lifespans appear so frequently in epics and other literature. I’ve heard that in the case of the Bible that ages in some books were inflated to make the characters appear particularly wise and experienced beyond what is apparently possible. After all, your grandparents are probably the wisest people you know and they could be 60 or 70, so a 150 year old must be twice as wise. It’s almost a shorthand for “respect this character”. Also, it’s common in mythology to have a “before” time when things were different, and a “present day” which is how the world is now. To the early Jewish people’s, in the time before the flood, people lived longer than they did in the present. BThe Bible makes reference to this idea, something like “the longer one lives the more wise they become”. I believe this idea extends to a lot of ancient mythological literature.

I came to comment something on a similar note. Our refusal to believe the possible of beings living longer than we might think possible could be our problem. There are many many stories of people or beings living for huge spans of times from every corner of the world. Maybe they did live that long somehow.

Also, would it be possible to have a video on Urukagina of Lagash; who supposedly was the very first reformer and maker of laws? I find the fragments of his edicts and his life fascinating, and I hope within the mounds of Telloh there lies his code.

I've noticed that in a lot of Sumerian texts, there is a lot of repetition. Not just in the king list, but in literary pieces, such as The Descent of Inanna. Are there any guesses as to why they conveyed information in that way?

i found the list on Wikipedia. it even included Akkadian emperors, who have their own list. i found it when attempting a image file of Iraqi leaders from the Sumerians to Saddam Hussein and current president of Iraq. as well as the Abbasid caliphs who founded Baghdad, Iraq's current capital. it was a buffer between Persia and the Ottoman empire until it was conquered by Suliman the Magnificent in 1534.

Could it be that “years” we’re not really a measure of time, but a measure economic gain per standard length of time (kind of like GDP?). For example: in the first year of the city being defined, that would be defined as one year, but if in the next calendar year the city had a GDP that was double, then that calendar year was measured as two “years” in the history books? I’m sure something got lost in translation. Either that or maybe replace GDP in my example with some other factor like population change per year or territory gained per year. Either way it’s still possible for the standard “year” to be changed as the historians of the time would have re-standardized according to new data. Kind of like inflation gets recalibrated every few dozen years to be based on an arbitrary year some time after the previous time used in calibration

That's what I usually think too. Maybe not GPD, but with language evolution like: if the word for a day is something that could translate as "a whole cycle" but that the "whole cycle" used to be a night and day, and became later a lunar cycle and even later a year. The lunar months could be a realistic base since Etana's reign would be about 53 years. But without another tablet explaining what was a "year" in the early day of writing, we probably won't know.

it may be possible the dates and numbers are correct. the bible also has similar years. its may don't record everyone, but people live almost a 1,000 years old. before the flood. after that for the next 500 years, they live 400 down to 200 years old. Moses live 120 years old. in the year 1951 bc. the flood took place about 2400 bc.

The years of kingdom reign similar to the ages in genesis are numerology codes. Add them together and reduce to the lowest single digit to find the hidden meaning.

I have noticed that the Ur-Nammu code of law, which was written more or less 50 years after the biblical flood by Ur Nammu or his son Shulgi is way more advanced than Hammurabi's code, and also very similar to the Torah's parasha "Mishpatim". My theory which is more my fantasy is that Ur Nammu was Noah, Shulgi was Sem and as the Bible says they knew the Torah, their code of law reflects it. In hebrew Ir means town, and if we twist it a little Ur Nammu could be Town of Noah. It's just a fantasy, maybe to good to be true, but the similarity between Mishpatim in the torah and Ur Nammu's code of law is real.

I suspect the oral traditions DID suggest these absurd timelines but I think the reason was to cement the early kings as deities. Nothing says "God king" like an inhumanly long reign. Though it's a little odd that such ancient people even had the concept of 10's of thousands of years when according to our version of history they would've been a bunch of rock smashers at the time.

Wonderful Cy, how long do you practice those tongue twisters. Although ancient Egypt dominates the popular imagination, wouldn't you agree ancient Sumeria was the more significant in contribution?

Haha my pronunciation in the beginning was horrendous, but slowly I practiced a bit using lectures that I found and got used to saying certain combinations of syllables and it started to get easier with time. Hmm, with regard to contributions, I think they both made many but at different times. Sumerians have some of the first known contributions and innovations, like large-scale farming, irrigation, the first real cities and writing, though I think because Egypt has been in the popular imagination longer because we knew about its history much earlier, plus western civilization has been in contact with it much longer - from the days of the Alexander to throughout the Roman/Byzantine Empires, it's been closely linked to the west, whereas the world of Mesopotamia became more detached from western civilization. Not only this, but Egypt's great monuments such as the pyramids, sphinx, its great temples, the valley of the kings and the like have stood the test of time much better than structures in Mesopotamia. Gilgamesh ruled after the great flood, as he traveled to Noah to receive wisdom from him. The great flood happened in 2250BC and is refered to by science (unknowingly) as the 4.2kiloyear event.

It could be the blood line of every king with the pre flood era hence the long reign.. perhaps the ancient assumed their forefathers name in pre flood times.

Seriously if you look at the numbers of years the kings ruled as the number of citizens they ruled over instead of some of the kings it then seems possible the number of years. Maybe it was a census of the people at one time before instead of how long they reigned for.

6:17 I don’t believe that it was a mistake. It may have been one of their gods. The Fermi paradox suggests that we have had no interaction with alien life, however most ancient texts suggested people at one time lived amongst their gods, many wrote of sky people, had in-depth knowledge of things that they could not possibly know, and lived for hundreds to thousands of years. There are also some sculptures of those ancient Sumerian kings and they do not look completely human.

While the long lifespans seem extremely unlikely and I am skeptical to say the least, always remember that history is littered with locations, events and people that were once considered to be just part of fanciful stories and lore and we have since found out otherwise. In my opinion it is a little arrogant to dismiss out of hand what we can in no way actually prove or disprove and besides what fun is life without the possibility,however remote, of things that are beyond our reason and comprehension

I have believed for a long time that Years in the bible and Years on the Kings list just means Lunar Cycles (so divide the number by 12). That explains most everything. The part of the kings list that says 36,000 years can not be explained (I thought it might be the length of that dynasty but even that is far fetched).

I would like to modestly add my (2-cents). Having studied the NearEastDocuments(CuneiformTablets) since 1990, I conclude, along with a few others who choose to specialize in Greater Mesopotamia--that there is more to the story... . But to understand it one needs to open our minds to a wider understanding. From Jefferson's time to 1969 was a very short span in A Long Count [of our own SolarSystem]. Any Beings who evolved on another planet -- some mere million years prior inside our own System can do miraculous things. Just as Lincoln or Kennedy vs Jefferson and Franklin. Or Columbus did vs our Homo erectus who (miraculously) escaped Mother Africa via the route through Kenya. Why can not then, Kings of Olden pre-Diluvial times have live on partial Nibiruan time: 3600-earth years = 1-Anunnaki year. This will explain the LongReignOfThatOldenKing'sList. Isn't it "cycles of time" and not necessarily "years" for example 28800 cycles of days = 80 years (those days a year was considered 360 days long)

I think these long reigns were not due a translation error,they were made like this. We know by archaeology that early dynasty rulers were divinized after death. They are sort like like Hindu Yuga Cycle with the impossible long timeline.

Pretty sure the list is split between kings that ruled before the flood who are the ones with really long lives and those kings that came after the flood who lived long lives but not to the extent of the first kings.

@@theloner6063 looks like the place is a melting pot, being at the crossroads of east and west. Cannanites and Philistinians were half Greek, ancient Iranian and also Egyptian mixed in. Then the people from Sumeria came and mixed until the Israelites rose up and tried to break away from Baal worship.

Why dont you use their calendar instead of the one we use to measure time. Just like they wouldn't know what a foot or a meter is. We should assume their word for year does not equal the exact amount of time as our year. Examples being : Did they have a leap year back then?

in the ancient days there was no concept of a year they counted seasons or sun & moon rising & setting. for example somebody 25000 years that means 25000 days or 69 years

the long years are time being counted in lunar time base on ASTROLOGY movement of the Stars ( SARS ) WHEN YOU HAVE NORMAL years being counted in solar time. Luna time is base on the star solar time is Base on the Movement of the sun
