It’s worth mentioning that the guy who won NL comeback player of the year also won MVP the same year. Life as a catcher has to be tough, but coming back from a potentially career ending injury to win MVP as a catcher, call a perfect game, and win the World Series all in the same year is truly incredible. There will never be a better year for a catcher than Buster Posey’s 2012 season.

From a bias standpoint my favorite memory of 2012 was Frank McCourt being forced to sell the dodgers. But besides that it was for sure the emergence of Harper and Trout. 2 of my favorite players to this day still.

As a giants fan 2012 has always been my favorite championship year. Countless memorable moments, obviously Cain’s perfecto, the Pence trade, Posey MVP season, Sandoval’s 3 HR’s in game 1 of the World Series. Looking back it was a great ride and I’m happy I got to watch it.

I'll always remember 2012 as the year I took my first steps in going to all of the Major League Baseball ballparks (I went to 10 that year, although I wouldn't finish my quest until a decade later) as well as the year I began a quest of meeting the 300-game winners (I met Gaylord Perry, Steve Carlton, Phil Niekro, Don Sutton and Nolan Ryan that year). Unfortunately, as a Rangers fan that season ended on a sour note as they suffered a rather historic collapse.

People seem to forget that in cases of Irabu and Igawa, the fault was actually on the Yankee's side. Both pitchers were never at the level of even Nomo, much less Darvish or Tanaka. Pitchers lesser known like Iwakuma, Maeda, Kuroda, and Ishii had better track records in Japan. Matsuzaka was actually pretty good for 2 seasons, as you've mentioned. The tragic signing of Irabu and Igawa was caused by the Yankees not doing their homework. No one in Japan seriously thought they would succeed in the Majors. Matsuzaka was an absolute stud for some years in Japan, but he was also well known for two things in Japan. 1) He had been overworked from a very young age (little league) , and 2) he had a bad personality and an even more terrible work ethic. Though his training regimen was non-scientific and he preferred to throw like 200 pitches a day, he hated basic exercise and workouts. He was very bad at controlling his diet which led him to have problems with his knees because of his obesity. His team pampered him so much that they allowed him to send a team employee (a former Olympic medalist) to the police to take place for his responsibility in a traffic violation. It just so happened that he was flirting around with a celebrity and had been parking his car in a no park zone for one too many times that the nearby residents got fed up with it. That was when he was 19 or 20, and that meant he was breaking his dorm curfew on a regular basis. In short, he was a dick. Look at the players who have enjoyed success in the ML like Ichiro and Ohtani. They were students of scientific training, never broke their training routine, never partied, and lived like a Francescan monk. Darvish was an exception because, though in his earlier years he was considered to be a partying dick, he reconstruct his lifestyle to become a diligent student of the sport after his second marriage. So, besides sabermetric stats, teams should make sure to look into the character of Japanese players when scouting them. I believe this is the area in which the Red Sox grossly failed when signing Matsuzaka.

And I think the 2012 season began with the amazing final week of the 2011 season, followed by the amazing 2011 post season.

I do believe that Trout over Miggy would have been a mistake. I value a Triple Crown winner more simply because it draws eyes to the game in so many years of playing Trout never could generate the hype like his teammate otani or his fellow players like Harper or Judge. What's the point of the MVP and face of a generation in MLB if can't help the league in the right kinda way
