Sonic walking into that post credit scene asking Mario about the Smash Bros Initiative was fucking wild

The movie's biggest victory is that it captures the soul of Mario beautifully.

Additionally when they were on the rainbow road and mario turned off the road to get to the other part of the road I appreciated that fan service

We took our kids. My 5 yo son LOVES Mario - wanted to dress up as Mario to go to the movie. His little sister insisted on dressing up as Peach. They were beyond excited. After the movie, my son kept saying “I loved the Mario movie!” over and over. We all loved it. And you’re right - we all want to see more. Either to see it again or to eventually get a sequel.

Luigi’s ringtone is the GameCube startup music…thought that was a nice touch

The perfectly timed ♪Da da da da da duuun♫ when Mario and Luigi went into the sewers and the sign Level 1-2 appeared was perfection of an Easter egg.

Lumalee cracked me up and Jack Black was shockingly perfect as Bowser. JB created his own unique new character voice for Bowser. I am a Jack Black fan and wouldn’t have minded his natural voice at all, but he did such a great job creating a character voice that it didn’t feel like Jack Black at all. It wasn’t UNTIL he started singing that it was a obvious who it was and for those scenes it fit so perfectly and you realize exactly why he was meant to be Bowser. He is crazy talented vocally and so dang funny! I laughed a lot and I actually teared up a lot. I enjoyed t guys movie so much! ❤

They absolutely should make a Legend of Zelda movie. They could also absolutely get away with Link not talking by going with the whole Snake Eyes thing where he doesn’t speak because of something in his backstory.

I liked how the humor revolved around references to video games. Like banana peels tripping Karts, shrinking mushrooms, and Bowser’s crush on Peach. As a fan of the video games those were fun and cool to watch. I was worried they would do pop culture or fart jokes as the humor, but gladly they’re not here. I also liked how many times Mario fails and gets beat up. It’s like me in the videos games. I always fall off platforms and die. I know the game over tune well too good. I retry and beat the level. Just as Mario did in the movie.

My Top 10 Moments of The Super Mario Bros Movie... 1. I liked how they incorporated the old school SMB song intro with high pitch voices then panned to Mario and Luigi talking better to start movie. 2. Loved Mario saying "It's-a-mee" when he's in the air after Peach yells out his name. He looked cute and it's funny. Poor guy. 3. Loved the yellow catsuit getting screen time, it truly is adorable and the reason I sometimes replay Super Mario 3D World. 4. Seth Rogans close up laugh as Donkey Kong when Mario is small is cheesy but made me laugh. 5. The ending when they get the star the classic music it plays is awesome to me. 6. Jack Black trying to be evil at the same time trying to show he has heart is hysterical. 7. Princess Peaches blue eyes like in the flower field at night the animation is strikingly gorgeous. 8. The whole 🌈 Mario Kart segment of course. 9. The music montage-like of Mario and Donkey Kong running and kicking butt... its a good mixture of everything. 10. Toad. He's cute.

The baby Mario and Luigi scene was very touching to me…and the final showdown was honestly so worth it. The movie is just okay but Mario and Luigi battling together had me almost cheering in my seat!

The good thing about the easter eggs is a lot of them made sense for the story. None of them seem forced in even while there were a lot of them. They all flowed and made sense for what the characters were trying to do. I felt the same way about the use of classic Mario tunes in the movie. It felt very organic.

On the one hand I was hoping that Bowser would be a pretty serious villain based off of the opening scene but the entire movie just being Bowser trying to marry Peach was funny and extremely accurate to the games haha It's definitely been a while since I laughed as hard as I did at Luma saying "MERCY!" when it was announced that they were going to be sacrificed. Best joke in the movie, easily.

Took my kids to see this movie, it was their first ever movie theater experience, and left pleased and wanting more.

Two moments that made me audibly gasp in the theater: The GameCube jingle on Luigis phone. When they first got to Rainbow Road and you hear a remix of the SNES Rainbow Road theme. Goosebumps!!

I don’t get why so many people are complaining about the plot. It was exactly what I wanted out of a Mario movie. A goofy fun adventure with wholesome character moments in between

All the characters were great but man the characterization of Bowser was PERFECT. Literally zero complaints, they captured everything that makes Bowser both an intimidating and funny villain, depending on the game. Jack Black understood this role on every level and the writers gave him fantastic material to play with. When the scene opened with him at the piano I was so fuckin excited, just what a joy.

Saw it last night. FUN Movie! Had a smile on my face the whole time and the nostalgia, easter eggs, and overall feel of the movie brought joy. Definitely a love letter to fans. Really hope the movie does well. No the story is not super intricate but it's old school Mario Bros plot. Bowser the bad guys, someone needs help, hero's are needed, and they do it while facing immense peril and a fun overall tone with references to many Nintendo properties that will have fans happy til the end.

Peach's obstacle course felt like a Mario Maker giving other people their level having used the metadata to build it around their perfect jumps

Every studio wants to have that epic use of Bonnie Taylor's "I Need A HERO" song.....BUT not none shall be as epic as when it was in the final montage in SHREK 2!

I’m just sad that Lou Albano, Danny Wells, and Bob Hoskins are no longer with us. That would have been an epic set of cameos, like a whole Mario family.

The wide gap between audience reviews and critics reviews is another perfect example why imdb is the best place to look up how good a movie is. It contains the opinions of critics, fans and casuals all in one score and you get a pretty accurate rating for how good a movie or series is, which in this case currently sits at 7.5 and is pretty spot on for this movie.

Honestly I wasn't expecting much but it was a fun, simple, nice movie. Seeing characters I grew up with on screen was just fun. When Mario was running the obstacle course and started running with his hands and arms out before he swan dives off of the brick path, I was stoked. So many animation bits that were from the game. Loved it 🙌

Saw it with my wife and daughter. The moment the first trailer dropped, my kid and I were excited! And we watched it together laughing and having fun all the time. It was a dream come true!

You have to admit that it was an excellent choice for a Jack Black casting. That music was excellent, a great blend of characters making it and it just being put with the scene.

Fresh out the theatre in Vietnam here! There were just a few men and women, and a row of rowdy schoolboys in front of me, probably because it's Friday evening. Everyone had a blast. All the adults laughed along with the boys. I had no trouble following the plot even with next to zilch knowledge of Mario; my parents were purely Sony/PS when it comes to games. My twin brother and I grew up with Crash Bandicoot as our Mario. And I literally bought Mario Kart 8 and played it for the first time days ago to prepare. And as a writer myself, I feel it's pretty clever how they incorporated the most iconic elements of the games into the plot. It feels weaved into, mostly seamless. The story was simple, your regular hero's journey. And very fast-paced. I agree it could've slowed down a bit and added more emotional flashbacks, but even what little we got of Peach's backstory is both sad and beautiful. And a mystery we perhaps could delve into in later installments. (I LOVE that exchange between her and Mario. So touching and bittersweet. Mario suggesting Peach could've come from our world, but Peach accepting the fact that she might never know her family, with just how many worlds there are out there. But hey, she found her home in the Toads that she would protect at all costs, and the universe is vast and full of possibilities!) Having an impossible to please Asian Dad and a twin brother, I can relate to the angst and feels of the story right away. The climax really tugged at my heartstrings. I think we're all tired of gritty realism and complex, epic plotlines now. So such a simple but timeless story of an underdog who never gives up and becomes a hero is such a breath of fresh air. The movie hits theatres in Japan in late April, and I'll be watching it again in higher quality when I return.

The outfit that Charles Martinet's character had in the beginning of the movie was similar to the original outfit Mario had in the 1991 version of Donkey Kong. The outfit was just a little more faded than normal. It was a nice addition to have him do the jump he did in that game too.

When I first saw King Boo and King Bomb-omb I was so excited considering the fact that there had been NO mention of them appearing in the film so that was a nice surprise. Plus despite King Bob-omb blowing up I hope he will come back in a future film as King Bob-omb blows up all the time and he STILL comes back.

I’ll never trust anyone who says this is a bad movie. There were a couple cringey little kid jokes, but the smile on my face was WAY too big for me to care.

During the wedding scene a Yoshi egg was placed down as one of the gifts. I for real thought Yoshi was gonna pull up at the end. He was the only guy out of like the Mario A-cast that wasn’t in the movie. Next film hopefully we branch out with Wario, Waluigi, Daisy, and some others. Maybe Wario and Waluigi can break Bowser out of his tiny cage

Your feeling about the statement that Peach got through the obstacle course on the first try is pretty valid. But I kinda took it, even on my first viewing, in her backstory that she had literally been trained for the obstacle course by the Toads. So when she actually did the obstacle course, she did it on her first try. XD That's just my takeaway though.

Not gonna lie, the heartfelt moments combined with the nostalgia storm in the third act literally brought a tear to my eyes. And Lumalee was not in it enough!!!!😂😂😂

I find the conversation around references to be super fascinating. People are suddenly giving Sonic the Hedgehog a hard time because of a lack of references, when the story for both movies are fine. And the characterizations of Sonic and Co are on point, which is what a lot of fans were concerned about given how he was in the meta era of Sonic games. That's the important thing when it comes to making a franchise movie like these. The story is what matters, the references are the icing on the cake. And it's IMPORTANT to be different anyways. Mario went balls to the wall and people are having a good time with it. Sonic is going the slow world building route, and people appreciated how many references were NATURAL feeling in the second film...and it's gonna be worth it in movie 3 when we get to Shadow. But this was just a fun time all around which is also fine.

That scene of Mario and DK going wild and trying to make their way to Bowser was just pure joy for me. Saw it in 3D, liked that they sampled music from the games, & the Tanooki suit was the cherry on top 🍁😭

My favorite easter eggs were: - Punch Out Pizzeria with Little Mac's gloves, champion belt and portraits of all the fighters. - Charles Martinet as Jump Man and Mario's Dad was good. Mario's dad sounded a little like Warrior. - Mario has an Arwing model on his TV, plays Kid Icarus and has a F-Zero poster on his wall. - Also Disk-kun, mascot of the Famicom Disk System has a store called after him.

This has got to be one of my favorite movies I enjoyed it from the beginning to the end Credits, I felt they did nostalgia and references smoothly not forced or reaching, rainbow road was one of the best parts, bowsers song is a freaking hit

My favorite Easter egg was when Bowser is announcing his plan to his army, and we hear his band play the Fury Bowser theme from Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. I was not expecting that at all, but it was very welcome. The Glass Joe and Bear Hugger picture cameos are a close second, I’ll take any Punch-Out nods I can get.

My 7-year-old daughter LOVED this movie, and was highly anticipating it for months. She's played most of the contemporary Mario games and a few that I grew up with on the NES and SNES so between all the musical scores, enemies, few bosses (like King Bomb-omb and King Boo), and items, she got a good number of references. She was laughing a bunch, got a little scared at the dry bones scene with Luigi (I was kinda hoping to see more Boos in the abandoned castle and more overt nods to Luigi's Mansion), and was glued to the screen the entire time. Meanwhile, I'm smiling like a goof throughout the film with references which I got instantly, from Punch-Out Pizzeria (and all the art there) to various glimpses of old SMW maps, iconography, and more. I absolutely loved how they incorporated Rainbow Road into the movie - and Mario Kart in general. The blending of games to make this movie work I thought was so Miyamoto. Related to him: it's clear a lot of love went into this film. Yes, it's a corporate creation, but this is also Nintendo we're talking about. And as a lifelong Nintendo fan (been playing since 1987) , I not only felt very satisfied with the movie overall, but I intend to see it at least one more time while it's in theaters. Also... consider me a new subscriber!

The easter egg that stood out to me the most was honestly Mario playing Kid Icarus on NES. It made me realize that while we’re all understandably demanding adaptations of Zelda and Star Fox, I’d argue Kid Icarus is a Nintendo property that deserves one just as much. I highly recommend Kid Icarus: Uprising on 3DS to get where I’m coming from, one of the most underrated games of all time.

Speaking of nailing the score, I'm a big fan of Godzilla and I was happy that Bear McCreary used Akira Ifukube's original theme. It made me so happy.

One of my favourite touches in this movie was when they were making the carts, a rendition of the mario kart 8 kart assembly theme played. It was very on the nose but that attention to detail is incredible.

Saw it this morning. It is a fun family movie. The animation is beautiful on screen and the cinema had lots of parents taking there young kids to a family friendly movie. Really enjoyed it.

I expected the Yoshi tease, but as the movie ended and we couldn't still see what would be, I had a glorious, hopeful glimpse, that instead of an egg we would see a star and hear "Poyo". I was so ready for Kirbs 🥺

It was definitely a fun time. Our daughter was geeking out the entire time. When they were selecting their karts, just like in the game, was a nice touch. Catsuit Mario and Tanooki were great.

The biggest overlooked animated film is Puss In Boots The Last Wish and I hope people give it a chance.

I loved this movie, it was so much damn fun. Growing up playing the games since I got a Nintendo for my like 4th or 5th birthday and got the combo SMB + Duck Hunt cartridge. 37 now and still get giddy whenever I hear about a new mainline Mario game haha. I'm so glad they built the world out and now gave oppertunities to take the stories anywhere.

Saw it this morning with my mom and we were both in love with it. Yes it’s for kids and it’s certainly not a “deep” movie but that’s not what I want from my Mario movie. This captured the feeling wonderfully, the music rocked and the Easter eggs were just that, stuff in the background that they didn’t feel the need to get fixated on long. If you know, you know and that’s perfect. I felt the D&D movie did it the same way. Neither one went like “see see it’s duck hunt and a hex blade spell” or whatever. Both just breezed by it. The movie moves along, I do agree the kart section felt like it lacked a bit of tension, someone else could’ve punched that part up a bit but overall I loved the movie.

That Yoshi teaser at the end really got to me. I pray they do him well in the sequel. The five year old inside me has been yearning for a good Mario and Yoshi story my whole life, and I will be waiting for the day the next movie comes. I hope it delivers a Mario/Yoshi story.

Pros: 1. The animation is fantastic. 2. The world is beautiful. 3. The orchestra is $sublime. 4. The action set pieces are great. 5. The voice cast did an amazing job. I know this is a children's movie, yet there are things the movie did badly. It is after all a movie just like any movie. Cons: 1. The 80's pop/rock songs did not really fit the Super Mario universe. 2. Unfortunately, I am going to include a topic that can't be talked about: Strong female characters. Peach was way too perfect. They force that strong female character way too hard into our throats through Peach. She has no flaws whatsoever even in the beginning! She reminds me of Rey in the Star Wars movies: Perfect. Quotes like "That's so princess of you", "He (Mario) does not matter". Yuck. Plus, she is the one who teaches Mario to be Mario, it absolutely doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Peach is included way too much in the movie. Just call this movie "The Super Peach Movie" already. All I ask for the filmmakers is to include an honest, real, flawed women in a movie, but not anymore. We need more Ellen Ripleys not Captain Marvels. 3. Luigi is constantly the victim in this movie. He is basically the damsel in distress for the whole movie. They did Luigi's character injustice. He only had one moment in the whole movie. Wow.

BTW, about peach doing the course once. She is the most op character in Mario. The only one who can fly on demand. So makes sense she can do the course the first time, and I think it's an allude to how op she is. In fact most people picks her in Mario 2 just so they have a chance of completing the game.

As a older fan and avid big kid I I have been playing Nintendo games & Mario since the 80s...so for me (also loving the live action movie) the Mario Bros tv show etc this movie had me smiling!! I took my Cat Toad plush with me and my family lol but for me it was great to get to see every egg from past games, I thought everyone did a wonderful job in it and it was done very well. I love seeing all the other small highlights to other Nintendo games too! My favorite game was Super Mario 3 because I remember when I got the racoon suit for the first time..I lost it so when it got it in the movie I was hyped lol My son plays Mario games with me and my husband also grew up on Mario too so I think there was enough for all generations of fans to enjoy. I love Jack Black as Bowser lol his Peaches song is stuck in my head now lol

What an awesome movie. So pleasantly surprised. Pratt and Charlie Day were perfect and the rest of the cast/writing was too.

Just saw it and thought it was definitely fun and worth the watch, especially to see a life long fav character on the big screen. There were a few small moments they could have added to give the movie and characters a bit more heart and it legit felt like scenes were scrapped. Like when Peach and Mario are looking up at the stars and talking about where she comes from. She says something vague and the scene cuts like Nintendo probably told them "No you can't have her say that". But then moments like the ending with Mario and Luigi coming together really felt good. Definitely looking forward to the inevitable sequel and spin offs

I loved the parkour in the scaffolding scene at the beginning with the "castle burger" pole

I like your theory of Mario being the villain. In the Original Donkey Kong Mario was actually the villain. He was Donkey Kong's abusive handler or owner. And some more useless trivia, you mentioned Popeye. Donkey Kong was created because Nintendo couldn't get the license to a Popeye game. A later Popeye was created which played like Donkey Kong.

Saw this movie last night and it was super fun. I'm excited for the sequel to have Yoshi in it. 😆 I'm hoping for an animated Zelda and Metroid movie one day lol.

Never been much of a fan of the Metroid games. But I'd love to see a movie in that universe.

I went and seen it last night and was charmed as hell by it! I really dug the movie!

We're finally getting movies (and TV shows) based on videogames that manage to stick the landing, because the makers respect the source material. Or know exactly how players experience the game and want to recreate the feeling for cinema.

The music was the thing that delighted me. So many of them I recognised from the Mario Bros games or Mario Kart games. They not only showed a knowledge and love for the games they were also done for conveying the tone of the moment.

I took my son who is on the spectrum as am I and he is 7 and he has loved Mario games of every kind so much since I introduced him to them when he was a toddler and so do I since I got my first NES console as a kid. Plus it was his first time going to the movie theater and it was the best adventure we've had yet.I felt like a kid again while watching it with my own son and we smiled and laughed through the whole movie. I say this is the best animated movie I have ever watched the only other one close to it has to be the toy story trilogy. I really hope they continue this building of the super Mario universe. Me and my son gave it 10 out of 10. We can't wait to own the Blu-ray.

My mom seemed to enjoy watching it with me which I wasn’t expecting. I’m pretty sure that the musical score, bright colors and character design are what make it so accessible to all audiences. But of course, references to games in both the music and visuals give it an extra boost to us fans. I can already see the opening sequence of a sequel being a parody of Alien where Yoshi is stalking them in the Brooklyn sewers, sticking its tongue out to steal their stuff while they aren’t looking. Then they befriend each other. I personally hope it’ll be called “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” with more Luma nihilism and Rosalina.

I really enjoyed the 2 side-scrolling segments in the movie with Luigi and Donkey Kong. I thought that they were a creative way to work a version of the gameplay into the movie.

I honestly like the scene where Peach was telling Mario she did it first try after he was struggling to complete the course. It just reminds me on how different gamer skills can be for Mario platforming. Peach is the experienced mario player(speedrunner even) while Mario is the first-timer just getting the hang of how the mechanics work. Also, the Mario fails in the obstacle course while predictable, does remind me of how funny watching twitch streamers fail while playing mario for the first time live. I just appreciate how the movie captures both aspects.

Saw it yesterday and today in IMAX both times. Illumination and Nintendo did a fantastic job with this movie. It’s a visual masterpiece with great attention to detail (i.e. the penguins’ feathers and Bowser’s hands). The plot is engaging enough to keep you thoroughly entertained over the short runtime. And above all else, the movie has so much heart and soul. It feels like a great homage to the games. Everyone should check this one out.

Mario playing Kid Icarus (one of my favorite NES games) kinda broke me for a second. My brain didn't know how to process that information. I really loved the (game) music! The Piano Scene with Magikooper and Bowser was so wonderfully done, it was so brief but very creative, that's really gonna stick with me. When mario tries the course for the for the first time, that was reminding me more of Mario Maker than it did than the classics but it was still fun, though. Thirsty Bower was... interesting. I will be saying PEACH or PEACHES randomly now. Thanks Bowser. I also had a real Bowser of a person steal my seat. If I didn't have anyone with me, I'd have told him and his princess to find another castle.

Audiences gave Uncut Gems a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes as well as highly praised Suicide Squad 2016 upon release. The notion of them having any sort of stronger sway in a movie’s objective quality than critics whose job is to professionally critique media, why they themselves spam 10/10 or 0/10 to push whatever narrative they choose at that time, is beyond laughable.
