The WWF / WWE launched a new era in the mid 90s known as "The New Generation". With an emphasis on more athletic superstars and an effort to get away from the bigger "larger than life" main eventers that dominated the previous era, The New Generation was all about updating the product to suit the time period. With that in mind, The New Generation also provided viewers with some remarkably bad gimmicks and characters, the WWF were still in the business of creating goofy gimmicks and The New Generation had it's fair share of bad characters.
Certain superstars thrived in the mid 90s and some of these superstars went on to becoming legends of the business. Guys like Shawn Michaels, Razor Ramon, Diesel and Bret Hart got bigger during The New Generation with some of their matches being absolute classics. In today's video, we'll look at 10 stars of the WWF New Generation and some of their greatest matches. To show that the New Generation also had it's issues, we'll also look at some bad matches from those same superstars.

The buildup to the Taker/Diesel match at Wrestlemania XII was so awesome. Each of them interfering with the other's matches, Taker pulling Diesel down under the ring and leaving that casket by the ring with "Diesel" in the casket. I was a huge Taker fan at the time, I thoroughly enjoyed this storyline their match at Wrestlemania XII was the match that excited me most on the card.

I always felt the New Generation era was very cartoony compared to the over the top nature of the attitude era that came after but this era still had some great stuff that made it very special, you had the iconic brother Vs brother feud with Bret Hart and Owen Hart, the first ever Wrestlemania ladder match with HBK and Razor Ramon and the two casket matches with Undertaker and Yokozuna, wrestling was so much fun to watch during this time because it really captured your imagination. Loved this era and lots of good memories for me watching this on Sky Sports.

I was only 4 or 5. By the time this generation hit, I ate it up. Mantuar, T.L. Hopper, The Goon, Doink, Bastion Booger, Duke Droese. Those off-beat fellas were my absolute favorites. This was such a unique era in WWF history. The great occupational gimmick era. Love it lol. Thanks for covering this era. You always surprise and impress. 👍

I think it is fair to say that the New Gen had a certain charm to it. As an "era" it is an anomaly in of itself. It is the WWF trying to find out what to do with professional wrestling post Hulkamania era. Plus, many of us grew up in that point of time, so we have those rose tinted nostalgia glasses on. I love that OSW recently had their New Gen arc, while you are going through the era as well, comparing your two perspectives are fantastic. Keep up the great work! What a pittance!

What helped the attitude era out a lot was the fact that you had a surplus of rising young stars with a lot of talent and they were still fine tuning there talent during "the New Generation" all these young talents would hit there prime at one time. And lucky for us that just happened to be the late 90's So you wouldn't have The Attitude era without The New Generation era. They go hand in hand. That's why I loved all of it.

New Gen was almost certainly the peak of neon spandex, mullets, and colorful 3D graphics, for better or worse (The Blue and Gold block WWF logo used before changing to the "scratch" logo is probably my favorite). It doesn't stand by itself very well, but in context of building up to one of the hottest periods in WWF history, the New Generation is a significant part of the story. Plus, we got to see Purple Undertaker, one of the best incarnations of his character. Great episode, very well told story, thank you Wrestling Bios!

Totally agree. Doink is seen as the poster child for the “silly” New Gen, but I will always maintain there is nothing inherently wrong with the gimmick, and in fact, as you guys say, it was dead cool at its inception. He was truly mean and threatening. Turning him face and giving him Dink is definitely most of what ruined him, and taking Matt Bourne out of the role didn’t help. He’s a very underrated worker and gave the Doink character all of its depth.

I’ll say the New Generation Era began at SummerSlam 1992. The first PPV not featuring Hogan, the the main event for the IC title Instead of the WWF title. Kind of like 1996 being the precursor to the Attitude Era: Diesel as a tweener ( the first wrestler on tv to imply that Vince is the owner of the company), the stuff with Austin in mid 96 to the end of 1997, DX etc. Although, it was not given a name officially until 1994, the new generation era began at SummerSlam 1992. Some will argue that it began at Survivor Series 1992, WrestleMania IX, or King Of The Ring 1993; and I’m fine with that. The Golden Era - to me - officially ended after WrestleMania 8.

SummerSlam 92 still had Savage, Warrior, and Flair in the title picture so I can't start that early. It was admittedly a very downtime for wrestling. With 1995 having some of the worst PPV buy rates ever. However I think that’s more to do with the over kiddy friendly program they were running with at the time. The New Generation is an awesome era, with many amazing shows and stellar matches. Mostly involving HBK and Bret Hart. Sure they had many gimmicks and wrestlers come and go during this period, however a few legends did get noticed during this time too. It was the era I started watching properly, therefore I may hold this era in higher regard than some. However some of The New Generation era has aged better than the attitude era.

But I have to admit Shawn Michaels' first run as WWF champ stands the test of time. Especially his match with Foley. But by then, the NWO was THE thing in pro wrestling. So I can't blame anyone for overlooking it.

I want to go back in time to the early to mid 90s and ask Vince “Why can’t we just have some big, mean, and scary dudes without a stupid gimmick?” I think Psycho Sid was the best idea for a heel.

@Football Junkie It's funny how you say you'd ask Vince "Why can't we have big, mean and scary dudes without a stupid gimmick" then go on the say Psycho Sid was the best idea for a heel. Psycho Sid had a standard psychotic attitude/gimmick hence "Psycho Sid". It was a play on his "Sid Justice" gimmick because he turned his back on Hogan and thus was born a "Psycho".

New generation is when I really started to get into the WWF. Watched some in the mid-late 80's, but mostly watched NWA stuff... until I started hearing about the "New Generation". Then I got a subscription to WWF magazine, started watching WWF, and the rest is, as they say... history. A seriously underrated era of the "World Wrestling Federation". Edit: I agree, 1000%. New Generation truly started when Hulkamania left the WWF.

I became a fan during this era. I was 7 and looking back, while the characters are terrible now, back then, I was way more tolerant. They weren’t too different from what I would have just got done watching on Nickelodeon at the time so I tend to look back at this era with a certain fondness.
@taffysaur
@taffysaur 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was 9 when I got into wrestling, and the bright colours and over-the-top characters really appealed to me at the time. That was 1992, though. What quickly happened was the gimmicks got sillier and sillier and soon enough I was 13 and stopped watching because I figured I’d outgrown wrestling. As much fondness as I have for the era, I have to also admit it eventually made me stop watching for a couple years.
@thefckumean2209
@thefckumean2209 2 жыл бұрын
@@taffysaur I hear you on that. I was in that sweet spot as I really started watching at the end of 94. I was only 10-11 by the time the attitude era kicked off so it was the perfect transition for me as the silliness and bright colors started fading out and being replaced with edgier themes as I made my way into my pre-teen/teen years.

With the Shawn Michaels thing I can understand what Vince was thinking with everything dropping somewhat after the steroids allegations and Hogan departure(and others) the WWF was in a bind. If I had the choice of either Vader or Shawn I would definitely picked Shawn. Apparently looking back on it now it was a good choice.

Going back to this era with folks who were into it already is what made me actually LIKE it. Bret & Owen being pure fire EVERY time either is in the ring but especially together, the Undertaker becoming a pillar, HBK being a great wrestler in the world's craziest outfits, Razor being a beast, the Kid being legitimately good even with his ultra-babyface persona... these were all things that hooked me. It wasn't all goofy gimmicks.

Excellent absolutely loved this a nice heavy dose of nostalgia I know that people love to rag on the new generation era but I loved it I suppose I was the right age for it as I was just a little kid and I guess that it was just too goofy for the fans who cheered for hogan in the eighties as they would have been teenagers by the time the new generation started

I ordered the PPV of the iron man match between Shawn and Brett, and I was incredibly impressed they had the stamina to wrestle that long and the creativity to keep it interesting the whole time. I also played all the video games during that time. My friend was obnoxious bragging about how good he was at mashing buttons in the Sega games. To be fair, he was good at it. He outperformed the turbo mode on my controller.
